Oliver Jeffers

this is one of Oliver Jeffers drawings in the book the incredible book eating boy the task was to re-create the image with the some

the images there to help us but we had to make all the

rest by ourselves

Oliver Jeffers was born in Port Hedland Australia

in 1977 he moved to Belfast when he was

younger he studied art at Ulster university and wrote books such as

how to catch a star and the incredible book eating

boy

this a picture from the book how to catch a star this is the image i chose to do my artist image

style on this picture of the person reaching out for the star in his rocket

this is an instruction guide from Oliver Jeffers in how to

draw a penguin he gives a step by step instruction in how

you do it my attempt is on the other page

Page 2: Jamie's sketchbook

Oliver Jeffers workthis is a picture of the boy i had to colour in

on photoshop i had to multiply the layers to

get colour in the image and then trying to

match the colours that are shown in the book zooming into the image

to get a fine line colouring of the image

i like how i got the colours and not

overlapping any of the background

this is an image i had to draw of Oliver Jeffers penguin i had to draw from the guide he gives in the guardian following

the step by step guide i created the penguin following this the image is a bit jagged but i am quite pleased with the

outcome i had to change the opacity to get different colours to fit with the image such as the shadow and the

orange bit on his chest

this is my drawing of the how to catch a star book i created my artist

image sketch i got the original image and placed it on photoshop so i could use the eye dropper tool to copy the image colour and use in

my image the process was quite hard trying to get where the colour meet each other and trying to blend the image the rocket was quite straight forward to make i gridded both of

the images so i could get the rocket i the right place the image is still

incomplete

this the final project i did for the Oliver Jeffers portfolio we had to create a page

form his book the incredible book eating boy this is the final project

together the task was to create the image on blog website with some the

images there for us or we had to complete the rest of the image and then place the image on the final photoshop master the image required a lot of tools

such as the eyedropper tool paint bucket zooming in images creating new layers and renaming them getting the image in the right place the best one

layer is the boy eating the book it came out perfectly

Eric CarleBorn in Syracuse, New York, in 1929, Eric Carle moved with his parents to Germany when he was six years old; he was educated there, and graduated from the prestigious art school, the Akademie der bildenden Künste, in Stuttgart. But his dream was always to return to America, the land of his happiest childhood memories. So, in 1952, with a fine portfolio in hand and forty dollars in his pocket, he arrived in New York. Soon he found a job as a graphic designer in the promotion department of The New York Times.

this is no doubtfully Eric Carle most famous piece of

work the Hungry Caterpillar that always well

known to children and most adults well be very familiar to this book and i

had a go and re-creating the image on photoshop

this a book i also enjoyed when i was younger and it was Brown, Brown bear,

what do you see i had a go and drawing the front

cover a s my artist image sketch

this is my image of a Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle the task was to make my own by first creating round circles and just getting the shape of

the caterpillar we then added some different colours as it like in the image after that i added the head again making a circle with the shape tool after that i then added some detail to the image making the ears purple and then adding the feet the yellow outline was made quick

selecting the image and then just highlighting the outside line i got then extend the line a bit and clour in only the area that was selected i then added the eyes and mouth ti am most pleased with the feet because i

really looked closely at them and then copied the colour patern

this is my name in my own font the idea of this writing task was to make are font on paper so we could create are own name in a style we would like we first had to make the guide lines with two lines at the top and two at the bottom at the same distance apart with that we use the guides to where we want the letter to go and also show where they will end at so if the letter starts at the top it would finish at the third line and if started at the second it would go to the bottom or if the letter was an a or e in lower case then it fit in the middle of the page as it does not have a tip that goes over or under the line.

with my alphabet and number text done and now

uploaded to my computer i can now place the text

into a new file by copying all the text and numbers

into a grid with the original text on them. i had to

get the grid from the posterous website but i

couldn’t download the link straight from it so i had

to copy the image and then open the image in

Photoshop once that was done i could then open

my text that i acquired from Nick and now i placed

in photoshop from there using the text box i could

using command c copy the image and then clicking

on the grid using command v i could copy the

image

once the letter is on the grid the layer had to be

multiplied so that it doesn’t overlap the grid lines

and makes it easier to line up the text to fit in

the box provided i had to do this for all the text

but after it was done i had a full alphabet in place

with 0 to 9 in place the grid is complete as you

can see below. this is my alphabet text again but this time i had to spell Media

National with the letters on a blank piece of paper on photoshop it

required the same task as the alphabet grid by copying the text from

the scanned image of my text and then placing the letters in the

middle for the first time i had to use more the same letters twice but

it doesn’t make a lot of difference as you still keep the letters from

the other page i put all the letters in middle with National starting

closer to the edge and nearer the edge to make it look better and

not start at the same place with National going near the edge. there

was some letters overlapping the other text so i had to multiply all

the layers so they don’t overlap

the next task was to get the text and then put it on a sketchpad i first had to find an image online of a

blank sketchpad and i found the perfect one it had a pencil in the corner but it makes it look like that the

text has just been put on so it makes it a great effect. instead of copying and pasting from the scanned

image i kept the previous work which was the Media National work i merged all the layers together so

that it became just one layer and then i could just drag layer and then place the layer into the sketch pad

at first the text was huge and overlapped the sketchbook so i had command t and make the text smaller

and then had to make the sketchpad on top of the text and then multiply the layer and then place the text

which i put it and the top and then placed at the side to make the image look like it had been written by

pencil with the pencil at the side looking like it had just been used.

background imagehad to start doodling on photoshop just to make a pattern and then crop a bit of the image that i liked and then start to colour the image only using 4 colours i used green, yellow, red and purple leaving the spiral white after colouring the images i added a stain glass effect that added red lines and i made the colours from the middle lighter almost turning white to the colours from the edge normal with some colours overlapping each other in the picture after we done that we then had to copy the image and then flip the image to match the otherside and keep doing this until the image size is 2000x2000

i am very pleased with my image and makes look very tripy and cool and best i feel was that the corner of all 4 make a star which really works well across the image and i really like that the image with the stain glass effect i added after colouring the image overall i am pleased with this picture and is now the background n the desktop

Rosie Ball study Rosie Ball is an ex long road student who went to the University of Norwich college of arts to talk about her recently nominated for a bafta for her game tick tock toys which won the 2011 dare to be digital competition. she studied games art and design BA hons of where she extended her knowledge of the gaming industry in her winning game tick tock toys her role was to be the 2D artist and the lead UI which meant she was doing all the designing and drawing of the game

to make her game Rosie has to first sketch out the idea of her game and to get the detail of what she is going to make and how the game is going to work she needs to design her characters how the scenes are going to look like and then show how the game play is going to work and how the player is going to understand this as well once she has completed this stage she then can start going into detail of the game. the game she made in university she had to make a flow chart so she can keep track of where she is and how the game process will work for her to make the game successful

as the picture shows Rosie makes the scene out of cardboard show she can see the image from different angles and start the storyboarding as well the images will show what the person can see and how she will want to design the game level with this in mind she can get the idea of how it will work in the Ipad for the gamer to see the cardboard does go into great detail as she says on her video that it really helps me to develop where i want my detailed images and to see the image from multiple angles in the shot for the ipad or ipod the picture above shows her shop for the game sweet land that she made for her project in university and you can start to see that the game doesn’t use a lot colour and it’s going to be a dark game and focuses on the main area of the game for the gamer to see when they are playingonce the design is done she then moves into the layout of the game onto the ipad she has to make sure the image she is working with fits into the screen and whats it to be in the right area for the gamer to see and make sure that the game is easy for the gamer to understand and to understand the rules and controls of the game and not getting confused by how the game works it must be clear to her and to the player as well as her.do work outside of school as this help will increase your confidence and skill for future workit’s good to be ambitious it might help with thinking of new ideas to work withDon’t lose track of what you want to learn in your final year as there are a lot of

Tony Blair Portrait this is a portrait of Tony Blair

my task was to make to copy of this image but only cropping an

area of the image i liked the image because he just uses the

a blue colour for the whole image apart form the face but

he makes the image around Tony blair stand out to get the main

focus on him and really captures the expression on his face and the rose on his suit is drawn in

great detail on the design of the rose

this is my first attempt at the image at first i had a go at

drawing the whole picture i felt that i got the body correct but

the problem was his face it really didn’t go as i wanted it to do so i felt that i could could do the face again but just cropping

the face .

after making the face which i was very disappointed about i wanted to try again but this time just to focus on the face of Tony

Blair firs t of all i gridded the original picture and put on the rulers and the same on the new image so i could see where the face starts and finish and the same for when it came to drawing the eyes, ears, mouth and nose this made the process so much

easier to draw the picture above is the final result and i am very happy with this picture this really is the best piece i have done on

photoshop the image i feel really looks like the real image and is so much better than the first image i draw for the whole image in

future i will work with grids as this made it so much easier to draw and see where the image lines up against the original image

Comic strip

this is the first piece of my comic strip that i made using a collage of images from google but we had to use images that were allowed to be modified so we had to go to google images advanced search and then and click on only images labeled for reuse only and we could search to see what i could use for my comic there would be a few images that are relevant to use all the others are not even close to what you type in the search engine. the first piece i started with was the wall to get the background. the second step i took was to add the wooden floor so i could get the balance between the floor and the wall after these were done i could go into detail of the room starting with the bed i took the image and then using the quick selection tool starting from the inside i could get the outline of the bed and delete the background and then place the bed in the comic strip making sure that the layer was on top of the floor and wall so it would not disappear into the background. i added the chest of draws in this was an easier picture to get out as it had no detail in the background so it was simple cut out into the comic strip. After that i added the alarm clock i couldn’t find the image i wanted so had to get a picture of a slightly blurred image and had to cut out the blurry parts of the image. once i had all the parts into the comic i had to place the images into the right place and making sure that the

layers dont overlap each over and fit into the right places

this is the second strip of the comics we made and we uploaded the scaned image to photoshop and from there we strated to make the image look more cleaner and much more presentable using photoshop we could zoom in to the picture and from there we could see where the image looks untidy due to the photocopier not picking it up. when we zoomed we could see the black ink with lots of grains so we needed to get rid of the the grains first of all though we had to get rid of the grey outline of the black ink so clicking on the image at the top and then clicking on gradient we could move the white colours to make the black ink stand out more and get a clearer image of what was needed to be done. once we had that done we could start to make the image look more better frst we tried using the mouseboard and then went on to use the tablets which made it so much more easier to use for me and we could draw a stright line just using one hand instead trying to control the brush with two hands and keeping a steady balance. once we gone over the detail parts that needed updating after that. i made the layer to go to multiply and then locked the layer and created a new layer which i could use to colour in the image and ake it more like a comic strip i then started to colour in the whole image and now makes the image look so much more better and easier to look at for the reader. i can also created shadows of some of the objects by using darker colours it can stand out more  the project is complete and ready to be put in with the others for the comic strip for the whole project

The Hobbit Little White Lies Cover

for this project I had to create a Little White Lies cover for the film The Hobbit. to do this I first had a go at

drawing on Photoshop the cover for theDarjeeling Limited film of Owen Wilson the Cover was

created by the illustrator PaulWilloughby. the picture on other page is my unfinished

app tempt of the cover

this is my first drawing of a little white lies

front cover the cover I used was from the

Darjeling limited I chose the front cover

because I watched the film before but also I

really like the shadings in Owen Wilsons face as

it makes it look more creative and also makes

his face look more rougher to highlight that

the character has been in a fight. the illustrator

is Paul Willoughby he has done many other

little white lies covers but he also does other

work for himself and other magazines that he

has done as well he normally does film

magazines and often his work are based on

actors.

Page 10: Jamie's sketchbook

to create the picture I got the image and then create a new A4 sheet and then lined the two up together and then put the grid on the images so I knew where I needed to draw I first used a thin brush on a setting of 6 I then started to get the shape of his head first I stopped at the point of were the bandages are because I wanted to add them later as they were the more detailed part of the drawing. I went to draw the mouth and the eyes which were no real problems but the hardest part was drawing the nose I have never really been that good at drawing noses it took many attempts to get the shape right. looking back at now this is something I really need to work on in the future of this project as it will really affect the drawing.

so I knew where the start of the bandages would be

I add the lanes to show the other bandages that are

on top of the first lot to create the depth of the

image. with the bandages drawn I then added the

hair that comes around were the mouth is on

picture as well straight forward hand drawn lines to

show the curly hair that he has with all the detail

done I could then add the colour to the picture

using paint brush tool I used the palette tool to

select the colours I wanted for the picture adding all

the colours and the dot on his head.

with the nose finally done I then started to add the bandages and the scuffs on the face it started to create more detail on the picture the black marks i used a very thin brush to create the scuffs and the bandages i also made light black lines on the plaster to show where the middle was. the next part was making the bandages around the head earlier I had stopped the head around half way.

I have done most of the image the only things that

need to be complete are the neck which needs to be

in more as it makes the head look more wider and the

top of the bandage that goes around his head. this

should take no longer than twenty minutes to

complete

Little White Lies Cover continue

Page 11: Jamie's sketchbook

With the first app tempt of a little white lies cover done I could now look at the Hobbit trailer to

understand what the themes of the film need to be likefor the cover for this I took screen grabs from the

trailer and then explain about the themes in the film that the viewer needs to know and how i can use this

for my project

the image shows a rural peaceful setting the mood of the image is very relaxed the characters show to be in engaging mood talking to each other as family you can see the setting is very rural and has a lot of wildlife built up around such as the tress and the over grown shrubs that have grown over the homes of the hobbits in the background see a blue sky and glorious green hills in the background to show the audience a very relaxed setting. the bright colours show the audience that it is a very relaxed setting.

The second image shows a very dark cave the only source of light is coming from Gandalf’s orb on the end of his mast the setting is very narrow with a small path way being the only visible object that you can see the theme of the image is more dark and suspense the audience know that the character is walking into the unknown and the theme of the image is to shows with the very narrow and barely visible image. the mood of the image is very tense as we can not see what is in front of Gandalf and the audience would start to expect something is going to happen. it sets the mood well for the film. the shot is from above so it like someone is watching him.

The Hobbit Themes

Monday, 12 November 2012

Page 12: Jamie's sketchbook

the final image we can see again is in the cave but the exit of the cave we the character standing at the exit and the other characters sitting around the camp fire. the dark setting makes it again very tense for the audience to watch but the difference is it looks like we are seeing the characters from someone else’s perspective to get the audience to know that someone is watching them and this keeps the viewer engaged to know who is the person or thing that is watching it creates a very tense atmosphere the visibility is hard to see but the main people who we are meant to be focusing on are clearly the characters for the audience to be looking at.

with the themes done I then went on to create a

mood board for the hobbit to get a understanding

of the themes and also the gain some ideas of what

I am going to draw and know what needs to be

included for the project the bottom half represent

the characters and their background and the top

half show the dangers that are in way and the

characters that are evil

Monday, 12 November 2012

Page 13: Jamie's sketchbook

With the Mood board done I could then move onto ideas for the final cover. I did this by creating the rough idea’s on paper using the style of Paul

willoughby I tried to create a drawing of Thorin by creating multiple rough sketches of the figure of him holding his bow and arrow to the middle of the frame which I was going to make the main focus point of the image as well as his face as it brings something different to view at and also it

creates a more interesting picture to view these were the first app tempts I had quickly drawn of

Thorin Face none of them look like the final product

but that was I was trying to get the shape of the head

and the hair look right as you will see with the drawings

of the actual final image they are much more detailed

Hobbit Drawings Thorin

Monday, 12 November 2012

Page 14: Jamie's sketchbook

these are some of the earlier work I did of other characters I thought of doing Before

deciding on drawing Thorin very basic drawing very quick and rough with no detail at all these

were just the basic images that were done within 2 minutes for each drawing of the

characters

these are some more drawings of Thorin that have done to help to get the final image perfectly these are

very basic drawings but these are the start to help me create the final piece. the point of drawing these quick drawings was to get the basic outline done for

the project later on

More Hobbit Drawings

Monday, 12 November 2012

Page 15: Jamie's sketchbook

This picture is a more detailed image of Thorin but it still wasn’t the final drawing I was going to make of him you can see much like the final version the positioning of him is the same and the bow and arrow all so included in the image the face was still not up to the standard that I wanted for the final image

this was the image that I presented to the class to look

at then give feedback on the image. as you can see the

bow and arrow is lower than the last image and he is

standing up right like a pose in a way I have added more

detail to the image with his fur coat and the pattens on

the bow and on his arrow the only thing that I didn’t add

was a background because I wanted to focus on the

image itself that I would focus on the background when I

came to that stage later on

Feedback for pictures

after completing my Little white lies front cover draft the class went around writing down their thoughts on the piece paper that was next to them the area's that the question answered were is the cover suitable for a Real little white lies cover, Aspects that you think

are particularly effective in the cover and Aspects that could be Developed or improved. these are the

responses for my front cover that I drew.

for the first heading the responses were Good body shot and the the dress and patterns relate to the hobbit well the responses gives me a good feeling that I have targeted the Hobbit theme these were the main theme for that response

for the Aspects that are particularly effective these

are the things that are said Well positioned, Nice

inking, lots of detail, Eyebrows portraying emotion,

The posture, attention to detail, the attention to the

patterns make it more effective, I like the shading on

the bow and arms.

these responses are pay attention to the detail that

have I have put into a makes me feel that the picture

is much more effective for a cover that is to portray

the hobbit which I am very pleased about and the

detail is something that will bring out the best of

this work so I have hit the right notes for a

successful front cover.

Monday, 12 November 2012

Page 17: Jamie's sketchbook

Feedback Continuedfor the final aspects that could be developed or improved the things that were said are More detail in the face, the fingers don't look realistic and some background detail this comment was most common I will add a background for the project because in the earlier sketches I did do trees in the background which makes the image look more intense.

the detail in the face is something I will look into if i used colour it will be very different and their I can add detail to the face afterwards. the last one was the fingers don't look realistic which is something of a weak point of my drawing much like noses it will be something I will have to practice to make the image look more realistic

the notes have got me thinking for the final project

which is always good for a project if I need to

change something to make the image more

effective to the reader the comments have also

highlighted the good things about the image which

is something that is going to be used for the final

work on photoshop

Page 18: Jamie's sketchbook

Paul WillougbhyLittle white lies covers

before I started to draw the final product on Photoshop I wanted to draw the character in the style of Paul

Willougbhy because he mainly focuses on the face of the character and it being the main theme of the work which was something I wanted to do for this project so

I had a look at his work and also looking back at the work of Owen willson that I had done it something that I was keen on doing for the project so I had a little look into his work to see what ideas I could take from him

looking at the two Little White Lies cover that he’s

done you can see the pictures are almost the same

in the way that the main focus is the face of the

character but we don’t see the eyes like in the

lawless were the eyes are covered by the hat and

the text that is the way as the same in the first one

the classes cover up the eyes but they keep the

main themes of a cover to show to the audience it

was something that I was going to do but the

difference would be to add an background to make

the image look more authentic

Page 19: Jamie's sketchbook

Before drawing the final image on Photoshop in the style of Paul Willoughby before I started my final project. I drew a dragon from a image I found from Google and then decided to to create to give myself an Idea of what I was going to do to create the final image . this is the image that I drew on photoshop

This is the image of the dragon that I drew on Photoshop

it’s unfinished but looking at it gave me great confidence

to create something abstract and also to high quality

level of drawing which I am aiming for in this project the

facial features are all in the right position and the picture

looks like an actual dragon. what I like most about the

image is that the eye the detail around the eye makes the

image stand out more which gives the image a more of

an edge this is something that I want to have for the final

project.

Draft Photoshop piece Paul Willoughby

Monday, 12 November 2012

Page 20: Jamie's sketchbook

With all the rough idea’s final drawings finished and already having a go at drawing a image on photoshop I now could start my little white lies cover of Thorin do to this I needed to have the little white lies logo on the magazine so getting the logo I then placed it to were it should be. the first thing that I started on was the Hobbit text because I had an idea of using the actual Hobbit Design I created this by drawing it and then adding at the bottom Issue I felt it kept to the The Hobbit theme for the cover that I was designing

This is the text that I created for the final piece I got

the image from the actual film Because I felt it would

work well on the image because it would be something

that would brighten up a very dark image and it keeps

to the Hobbit theme which works very well on the

final piece

logo work

Monday, 12 November 2012

Page 21: Jamie's sketchbook

Process of making the image

to start creating the image I first put the guides on to know where I can line up my image for to start drawing with that done I then started on drawing the head which was the centre point of the project with the little white lies logo already in Place i knew that it would overlap the head so I had to make sure the head was still even so I made the Logo transparent to see where the head joined up. with the head done I moved onto the outline of the body. with the outline done I could then start getting the basic outlines of the shields and the fur coat and the outline of the bow and arrow

with the all the detail done I could then start to get

the detail on the body to exact specifications that I

wanted them to be moving onto the colouring in of

the detail which took time but then I could see if I

needed to make any changes on the body or any of

the equipment that he uses in the picture.

The colours would take a while to do but with the

hair and fur coat I knew that I needed something

that would make the fur coat and hair seem real

doing this I added faint white lines with the opacity

down so it would create a lighter colour so it made

the image more distinctive

Monday, 12 November 2012

Page 22: Jamie's sketchbook

Process continuedwith the colours and the main body complete I then

moved onto the background what I wanted was trees in the background and a light colour to fill in the rest of the background I start by filling in the trees and then decided to show where the light is

coming from some of the trees would be a different colour to the rest.

when I did this it was a great idea it made the picture stand out even more which was something I was

looking for in the picture that was needed to make the image stand out. I filled the background in a very

yellow colour to complete the image this was the first draft completed

I then had another feedback lesson to show what

needed changing and the points of what was good

and needed to stay. overall the images got a good

review and the only problem was the background as

it needed to more detail this was the priority for

the final image I started to add trees in the

background in a very faint colour which made the

image stand out more.

with that done I then moved on to adding detail to

the bow I did a very basic box design but it was

really effect and it made a very basic bow and arrow

into something that was more creative to look at

and also it was something that the audience would

look at which is the main selling point on a little

white lies cover. once these touch ups were done I

then added the The Hobbit logo from which I create

earlier to the picture and the final image was

complete

Monday, 12 November 2012

Page 23: Jamie's sketchbook

This is not the finished version of the image but this is what I came up with before I did some minor tweaks to this version as you can see the image I have created is fantastic and could not be more pleased with this as it got everything that I wanted from this the image shows the characters detail to from the facial features that capture the anger you can see on his face. to the detail that on the bow with the dark green patterns that go across the bow which I feel give the character much more detail to the image because the image looks very basic with no detail on the character and this brings out something that is very noticeable I also created some detail on the armour as well to give out for the audience to notice and study with great detail . also the detail on the fingers look very impressive as this was a problem that I struggled with at the beginning the image looks like Thorin and all the detail is perfect it’s exactly how I wanted it especially the background as it makes the cover look more darker and more daunting to look at

draft picture

Monday, 12 November 2012

this is the final version of my Little White Lies cover the difference between the first and last is that the their is the trees that are distinctly in the background to stop making the image look flat I also changed the colours of the trees in the background to make them look more brighter than the first image to create a very luminous background for example the sun lighting the trees to highlight Thorin the main character of the cover. I also changed the colour of his face as well to see a little bit more brighter on appearance, the eyes have also been added with a white touch to show where he is looking the lines on the trees have been toned down because the white lines where to light so they needed the opacity changing to make it look more realistic the final image which I am so proud of because it’s a project which I felt was something that I could create that would look like the character that would be the most authentic image but also stick to the guidelines of a Little White Lies cover which was the most important aim for this project which I have complete using the tools provided

Meeting the requirements of the brief

the task at hand was to create a illustrated piece for the Hobbit for a Little White Lies cover to do this I

had to go through the task before hand so I could app-tempt to create a final piece. the first task was to look at other Little White Lies covers by other illustrators. I

looked at Paul Willoughby as the artist that I looked and in particular his drawing of Owen Wilson after

looking at his picture I went on to have a go at drawing the picture myself to give an idea at what I

was going to draw for the final project.

with the first drawing done the next task was to look at the Hobbit trailer to gain an understanding of the film

and also understand the mood the film shows to do this I took screenshots of the film and then describe the themes and mood of the screen shot and give a brief

paragraph

with an understanding of the film and the moods

that it shows I could now start to draw out ideas for

the final project but to start of just quickly sketching

out characters before deciding on drawing on Thorin

the task was now draw a rough Little White Lies

cover on a sheet of A3 paper to show what the main

idea that I am putting forward to the class as they

mark and say what aspects are great and what can

be improved this will give a clear understanding

what I need to do for the final project.

the peer feedback is critical for me to design the

final piece if I didn’t any research into any Little

White Lies cover work before hand the task would

have been complete but the work would be wrong

because research is vital to the task I need to gain a

clear understanding of the Little White Lies Covers

and The Hobbit Film so I can portrait the characters

in the right manor. the task incorporates the mast

head the task have been followed to the level of

which is required to create the final piece.

Aesthetic qualities of your solution

the style I want for the final project was in the style of the artist that I researched into Paul

Wiloughby because his Little White Lies Covers the main focus of the covers are the faces of the Actor in the middle and the attention is on the

facial detail without any background detail I wanted this for my cover but I wanted the extra detail such as the trees in the background to give

the Image a dark image to it but I wanted Thorin’s face as the centre of attention of the

Little White Lies cover.

For the Typography that I created I looked at the

The Hobbit Text and the colours stood out bright

Gold with darker colours around the edges to

show where the light was coming from. I looked at

the Lord Of The Rings logo and it gave me the idea

to create the logo for the Project I wanted it in the

style of The Hobbit so I made the first and Last

letters the biggest so underneath that I could add

‘issue‘ to fill in the space I also wanted to make the

logo look three dimensional as well so using the

colours it gave it that added edge which made the

logo look more impressive to look at. the Artists I

looked for types of artist who draw very realistic

typography and then applying it to the final design.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Overall the Image was the best I could produce and their are many parts to the project which I feel was a massive strength in the project but also their was some area’s now which I also feel looking back it could of easily been improved when having feedback and also a view from a longer distance to show what were the main features stand out. for me the main strengths of the project was the bow and arrow because it is the main focus of attention of the picture and the light detail that you can see on the bow really create a real abstract image and also it made the bow more interesting to look at. another strength was the background, it creates a more tense picture you can see the anger in his eyes and the background really enhances the picture that takes it to the next level and is something which I feel is very effective to look at and the it’s something that strikes out at you when you first see it.

the third strength is the logo because it was a task

that I took my time with because I really wanted

the logo to feel like the Hobbit and the Lord of the

rings type of logo and is something that I wanted

to be a big strength in the overall project and in

the end it came out better than expected the logo

fits the picture and could easily pass of as an

official logo for the film. when I look at the project

most of the work is to what I feel is top quality

standard which for this project is essential for this

project but with everything their is always

something that my be lacking in detail or just

doesn’t seem to work with this type of project and

their were a fair few on my project

Strengths and Weaknesses continuedwith this project their are some weaknesses in this and in one area I feel it should done again the first is the facial features the face was the right shape but I found it hard to get to look more mean and angry which was difficult to try to get fate lines to crate the facial features. if I had the chance again to do this I would defiantly practice before hand to create a face that will have a lot of features which can produce a brilliant piece of art with the main characters emotions that are key to this project.

the next weakness which I don’t feel is a big weakness but I get the felling it can be done much better the hair has the right shape and the thin white lines that I included make more realistic but again it could have easily have been done better but it is not a big weakness

the final weakness in which in my honest opinion

was absolutely rubbish because the armour I

drew on the right hand was perfect and looked

so realistic to the left arm which looks really bad

and very basic and the drawings is very basic this

is the part of the project that I really want to do

again as it lacked so badly on the final piece to do

this again I want to draw it again and then add it

to the final piece and this is the area which I feel

lacked the most and lets the project down.

with all the weaknesses I have discussed the best

option would to be practice the drawings before

hand then gain the confidence to draw it when it

comes to the final piece instead of trying to draw

all of it one go and getting annoyed that it won’t

work and drawing the whole section again.

Comparison with professional work

when I look at professional magazine covers and then compare it to mine they are very similar in how they are portrait to the audience with the Little White Lies they always draw their image

of the character but they are always in the middle and the centre of attention, to compare

it with other film magazines like Empire and sight and sound they also have the main

character or person as the main focus of the covers but they use a different way, they use

photo’s of the person and then use as the cover instead of drawing their own version.

which shows that Little White Lies is a more artistic magazine who focus more on the detail and structure of the film where as Empire and Sight and sound focus on the film in general what the film is like and their review which

appeals to a more broader audience who are just interested in knowing if a film is good or

not.

were as Little White Lies focuses on the detail

and will appeal to people are more interested in

the way film works and giving a very detailed

extract. they also focus on films that may not get a

huge general release.

when you look at my cover you can tell that it would

easily be a Little White Lies cover because of the art

work and the piece would easily fit in as a cover for

the magazine where as you Look at Empire and

sometimes the main picture my be on 2/3 of the page

where as the text telling you about what else their is

the magazine as well draws you away from the

picture. where as Little White Lies doesn’t have a lot

of text on the page normally is stuck in the bottom

right corner with very small text to show that isn’t

the main theme of this cover we want you to look at

the picture.
