James Tatum James Tatum James Tatum Biography International Jazz Artist, Educator, Lecturer James Tatum is one of the jazz world’s most distinguished Stars. He has a B.A. degree from Prairie View A&M University and M. Mus. Degree from the University of Michigan. Tatum has been involved with music and jazz education in the Wayne County Community College District, Oakland University, Macomb Community College, Oakland Community College and in the Detroit Public School System for the past 32 years. He is a member of the International Association of Jazz Educators, National Committee of the Black Jazz Caucus, Music Educators National Conference and International American Federation of Musicians. James Tatum is a professional musician, pianist and composer with a lifelong involvement in educating the art form of jazz to the public. In his role as lecturer and educator he is pleased to present a variety of musical themes in lecture format including The History of Jazz, African Music Influences in Jazz, How to Listen to Jazz and How to Educate the Improvisation of Jazz Music. Tatum has composed and written many compositions: “Contemporary Jazz Mass,” “Jubilee Jazz Suite,” “The Return of Joshua”, “Great Detroit Renaissance” and many others. His recent CD recording “A Tribute to Nelson Mandela” was released in 2013. James Tatum is President and Founder of the James Tatum Foundation for the Arts, Inc.For 26 years the foundation has diligently worked hard to keep his vision alive by identifying and providing scholarships to talented youth in the Arts. Over 95% past recipients have received their Degrees. In 2001 Tatum’s name was selected in Who’s Who Among African Americans Book. 2009, Tatum was interviewed on National CNN Headlines Newsmaker and in the same year was inducted into the First Historical Museum in his native home of Mineola, Texas. Additionally, Tatum received The People’s Choice Michigan Artist Award from Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm and received the Congressional Black Caucus Jazz Award by Congressman John Conyers, Jr. This past year 2012, Tatum was invited to Grenada West Indies to perform in a Jazz Lecture Performance Celebration Festival, sponsored by the U. S. Embassy and the Grenada Music Film Industry. Tatum highlighted the Jazz Education to a wide audiences on two Television Stations in Grenada. A Smashing Success!!!
