James Garrett Tribute to John Denver Sunday, September 25, 2016 3:00 PM We will kick off the season with a melodi- ous tribute to the late great John Denver. You will be fully Rocky Mountain High as you bliss out on James Garrett’s perform- ance of all the John Denver hits, including, Take Me Home Country Roads, Thank God I’m a Country Boy, Annie’s Song, Back Home Again, Sunshine on My Shoulders, Leaving on a Jet Plane (yes, he wrote that!), and many more. This concert will “fill up your senses!” Alfonso Ponticelli and Swing Gitan Sunday April 23, 2017 3:00 PM Alfonso Ponticelli and Swing Gitan is Chicago’s’ premier gypsy jazz band. If that term doesn’t ring a bell, you’ll immediately recognize the jubilant toe-tapping swing of acoustic instruments playing in the 1930’s style of famous guitarist Django Reinhardt. Alfonso Ponticelli is virtuoso on a number of instruments: we won the 1994 National Mountain Dulcimer Championship and he plays both guitar and banjo with the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra. He’s also a flamenco guitarist who has studied in Spain, but for the past 14 years, Alfonso has focused on his gypsy jazz guitar playing with his hot band, Swing Gitan. This is a homecoming for Alfonso – he graduated from Forest View High School! Martha Carés La Vie En Rose tribute to Edith Piaf Sunday, May 21, 2017 3:00 PM We close our season with an amazing singer – Martha Carés. Martha trained as an opera singer, and then used that talent to tour the country for over 1000 performances at Christine in Phantom of the Opera. Since then, she’s sung with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Florida Grand Opera and the Grant Park Music Festival, and won the Grand Prize for the International Bel Canto Opera Competition. But she’s not just an opera singer, you’d recognize her voice from McDonald’s and United Airlines advertising campaigns. Best of all, Martha has a wonderful and intimate cabaret performance featuring the music of Edith Piaf, which she will bring to our stage for an emotionally luminous end to our season. Guy Lombardo’s Royal Canadians Sunday October 23, 2016 3:00 PM Yes, we know that Guy won’t be there, but since 1989, Al Pierson (1972’s Illinois Teacher of the Year) has been leading this ensemble as it continues to tour the world, playing its book of great old tunes – Seems Like Old Times, Boo Hoo, Coquette, Sweethearts on Parade and Ain’t She Sweet, all written by Guy’s brother Carmen, along with other hits like Johnson Rag, Bye Bye Blues, and Enjoy Yourself. The band even knows and plays tunes less than 50 years old! We’re going to party like its New Year’s Eve in our auditorium when the band plays its most famous hit, Auld Lang Syne. Chicago Harp Quartet Sunday March 26, 2017 3:00 PM In 2012, four of the best harpists in Chicago decided to join forces as the Chicago Harp Quartet. These four stunning musicians have toured the country, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Curtis Institute of Music. They’re not just playing their own arrangements of classical favorites, but also partnering with cutting edge chamber music performers and premiering new works written especially for the Chicago Harp Quartet. This is not pretty background music, but rather some of the most interesting high level chamber music that you will ever hear. We’re lucky to have them – we’ve had to schedule this concert carefully so as not to interfere with their work with the Lyric Opera and other major Chicago ensembles.
