Dear Parent/Carers

Student and Family Access It has come to my attention that a small minority of the school community is exiting the school in the afternoon using the staff car park exit. I implore all families to please not use this area after school as teachers use this space to reverse their cars and leave the school grounds. There is very clear signage that indicates that there is ‘NO STUDENT ACCESS’ in and around the staff car park. Student safety is our highest priority at Jamberoo PS and it is vital that we work collaboratively to ensure there are no incidents that risk the safety of our kids.

Please use the exits located on the southern side of the school library. If you need to use the northern exit, where the small gate is located, use the walking path pictured below. The students use this path on a daily basis when walking to the front office to drop off notes or go to the sick bay.

I appreciate the support of you all in this matter. The last thing we want is for a student or family member to be injured on school grounds.

Street Parking Please ensure that before and after school, when dropping off students and picking them up, that road safety rules are abided by. ‘No Stopping Zones’ are not a drop off area. Also some parents are parking across the driveways of local residents’ homes, preventing members of the community from being able to reverse out of their driveways. If you are having trouble parking in close vicinity to the school please do not hesitate to utilise our school strategy of having a staff member walk the children to Kevin Walsh Oval where you can meet them. This prevents excess traffic in and around the school and ensures that our students are safe as they possibly can be. If you need further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Medical Information If your child has a medical condition, including asthma and anaphylaxis, their plans need to be updated by a doctor and sent into school. This is extremely important for staff at Jamberoo Public School to follow the plan set by the doctor. Please ensure any medical conditions, including allergies, have the updated plan associated with it. Thank you to those parents who have provided up to date medical plans for their children. Academically Gifted Class The school is very happy to announce that we have been selected to host the Academically Gifted Class for Year 5 students in the South Coast region for students identified as being academically bright. The class will run every Wednesday and will be located in the connected classroom (next door to Cooinda). Year 5 students from the South Coast area will be working, learning and interacting with Jamberoo students each Wednesday. The program commences in Term 2 (Wednesday 3rd May) and will run every Wednesday for 26 weeks. It is a great advertisement for our school being chosen to host the Academically Gifted Class in 2017. We will have many students, families and community members from throughout the South Coast visiting our beautiful school during the rest of the year. I am certain that the Jamberoo School Community will make them all feel very welcome. In other fantastic news we had four Jamberoo PS students who were selected to participate in the Academically Gifted Class in 2017. These students sat an online assessment (AGAT) and data was compiled (related to literacy & numeracy achievement) by their classroom teacher as part of the application process. Well done to Hannah Williams, Nina Donnerbauer, Clare Smith and Callan Mawbey who were all successful in their attempt to be involved in the class. I’m sure they are all very excited about the engaging learning and academic challenges that await them this year.

Shave for a Cure Thank you to each and every one of you who supported Alex Mawbey in his efforts to raise money for the ‘Shave for a Cure’ foundation. A great day was had by all, including the wearing of mufti clothes and having the SRC design very creative and unique hair styles. Once again, fantastic job Alex and well done to the very generous and giving Jamberoo PS community.

Office News First I would like to thank Emma and her team at Crust & Crumb for the great job of providing the school with lunch orders every Tuesday. But it has come to our attention that parents are dropping late orders at Crust and Crumb because their child has forgotten their order on Monday. Once lunch orders are collected from the school on Monday morning there will be no late orders! We have asked that Crust and Crumb not accept late orders under any circumstances.

The Learning Pit You may have heard your child or children talking about the Learning Pit this term. The Learning Pit is a term that recognises and acknowledges that learning is not easy, and that we should not just be ‘cruising’ through school – we need to make our brains ’sweat’ a little.

When we first start learning a new skill or concept, we may feel uncertain, nervous or

anxio u s. Jambero o teachers have taught their students this term that this is a very normal feeling and that we should persevere with our learning, we’re just ‘in the Learning Pit.’ When we start to master that learning, we are coming out the other side of the Pit and we feel great pride in ourselves that we are mastering it.

We have also talked about what we can do to help ourselves get out of the Learning Pit. For example, we may need the help of an expert to guide us, we may need to practise that skill often and we need to be brave and not just give up. Students can relate their learning at school and the experience of being in the Learning Pit to other skills they have learnt, such as learning to swim, tie their shoes or ride a bike. Mrs McCormack

Mosaic Art for our Bush Tucker/ Sensory Garden Progress continues on the mosaic art for our bush tucker/sensory garden. The Year 3 group has just completed their mosaic tile for the garden and it looks fantastic!

For families new to the school, this is a project that began when we received a grant from a local LandCare group in late 2015 to create a garden. This garden contains a combination of bush tucker plants and sensory plants. It is in a location where our students often like to play (in front of the Kinder/Year 1 classrooms). It was designed as a ‘walk through Jamberoo history’ and thus has a track through it. Last year’s Kindergarten class (this year’s Year 1) created the first mosaic for the garden in 2016, a cow scene, to demonstrate the importance of the dairy industry in Jamberoo’s history. Last year’s Year 6 group created the next mosaic tile, which depicts Jamberoo pub, to represent the creation of the Jamberoo village. One of the original land grant recipients, Michael Hyam, created the village centre on his land, and Jamberoo pub is one of these historic buildings.

This year, the Year 3 group has created a mosaic tile that represents Indigenous history in our local area, including the importance of the annual migration of the whales off the coast, which happens each year at the same time that the wattle blooms (notice that the tile has a whale and wattle).

We would like to express our thanks to Mrs Marlou Williams (parent of Sophie and Hannah) who has coordinated the construction of the mosaic tiles project and has shared her mosaic expertise. Mrs Williams has taken a lot of time to research and prepare each scene used for the mosaics. She has also taken great care to make sure these mosaics are created by the students and not by her. Here are some comments about what the Year 3 students have learnt:

I learnt about how to spread the concrete into the gaps between the shapes. Molly

I learnt about how we had to make all the pieces fit. We had to cut them to make them fit. Amarni-Lee

Every little piece goes a long way and is important. Cooper

We did this to show Indigenous people’s history. Lilly S

Dot painting is really famous for its colours and a lot of Aboriginal people use dot art. Macson

I learnt that whenever the wattle tree bloomed that meant the whales were migrating. Lilli M

I learnt that the dots on it stand for the dot painting that is so famous. Isabel

I learnt how you put the pieces on the edge. It has to be straight. Georgia-Jean

I learnt that the whales follow you if you’re on a boat. Tyson

You have to make the mosaic backwards. You put them on upside down and flip it when it is time to glue it on. Jack W

You have to put the pieces in the correct space. Talia V

I learnt that when you do a mosaic there has to be a space between each piece. That’s so you can grout it. Flynn

I learnt that the pieces don’t start in this shape. You have to cut them. Isaaac

I learnt that the wattle tree was important for Aboriginal people. When it bloomed they knew it was time to catch whales. Cameron

ANZAC Day Ceremony On Friday the 7th of April our school will hold an ANZAC Day ceremony. We would like to extend an invitation to family members and members of the community to attend. Any service men or women who would be willing to take on a special role in our ceremony would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Mrs Larsen for further details.

DON'T MISS OUR 2017 SRC DISCO! Next Thursday night the students and staff of Jamberoo will be dusting off their platform boots to join the fun of our annual school disco. For those that haven't participated in a disco yet, this is a night of dancing, groovy games and bonding on the dance floor. It is open to all students from Kindy to Year 6, fully supervised by several Jamberoo staff. The disco will be just $8 entry, which includes a sausage sizzle and refreshing ice block. DEBATING TEAMS 2017 Next Friday our school will almost double, with 80 debaters from around the region joining us. The debating teams will be attending the Illawarra & South East Premier's Debating Challenge Training Day, which we are hosting at Jamberoo Public. These days are run by the NSW Arts Unit and are a great opportunity to pick up some tips for teams entered in the competition and those students in the Development Squad.

We have chosen our 2 representative Premier’s Debating Challenge teams for 2017. We were very pleased with the number and calibre of students that trialled, including many of our Stage 3 students that were new to debating this year. Great growth mindset, debaters!

It is with pleasure that I announce our teams are:
