DIY Jam Jar Felt Daffs. A pattern by thesloehome.co.uk – February 2016 2
Tools and materials (enough to make 6 flowers)
Felt* in 4 coordinating colours:
Colour 1: at least 20cm x 30cm
Colour 2: at least 20cm x 30cm
Colour 3: at least 20cm x 30cm
Colour 4: at least 20cm x 10cm
6 florist wires (I used 22 gauge; the lower the gauge the thicker the wire)
Green florist stem tape - optional, but gives a nicer finish if your wire isn’t already wrapped in
paper
Hot melt glue gun and sticks
Scissors
Jam jar/vase and fabric/ribbon scraps for decorating
*I prefer to use 1mm 30% or 40% wool blend felt as it has a much softer feel than the acrylic felt you will
usually find in craft shops. Wool blend felt is widely available online in a huge range of colours. The
colours listed below can be purchased at paper-and-string.co.uk

Choosing your colours
The flowers work best with at least 4 coordinating colours. I chose:
Colour 1 - lemon: cut 12 petal pieces and 4 trumpet pieces
Colour 2 - yellow: cut 12 petal pieces, 2 trumpet pieces and 2 inner pieces
Colour 3 - white/natural: cut 12 petal pieces, 2 trumpet pieces and 1 inner piece
Colour 4 - mustard/orange: cut 4 trumpet pieces and 3 inner pieces

Making your flowers
Heat your glue gun whilst you wrap your florist wire in tape, allowing an overhang at each end; neatly
trim the overhang.
Cut two vertical slits into each inner piece, stopping about two thirds down (1).
Squeeze a vertical line of glue down the centre bottom half of the inner piece and glue your wire firmly
into place (2). Wrap and glue the sides around (3). This forms the centre of your flower.

Squeeze a horizontal line of glue along the bottom of one trumpet piece and wrap around the inner
flower piece, aligning the shapes at the bottom (4 & 5). Repeat with the second trumpet piece, on the
opposite side (6). Place a small dot of glue at the top corners of one trumpet piece and stick to the other
to form a tube shape (6).
Squeeze a horizontal line of glue along the bottom of one petal piece and glue to the trumpet, taking
the bottom of the petal slightly lower than the base of the trumpet (7). Pinch each side of the petal at
the base. Repeat with two more petals, making sure you space the three petals evenly around the
trumpet (8).

Glue the remaining three petals in the gaps between your first three petals, this time not pinching the
shapes. And there you have it – your daffodil is now finished. Cut or fold the bottom of the wire to give a
good fit inside your vase/jam jar. Repeat the steps above to make your other flowers.
Decorate your jam jar however you like. I cut a strip of fabric with pinking shears and finished with lace
ribbon, baker’s twine and a handwritten tag.
