North Johnston Middle School Lady Jaguars de- feated Four Oaks 45-16 in basketball on Thursday, Jan 8 at home as both teams resumed their conference schedules following the Christmas break. NJMS jumped out to an early 12-3 first quarter lead and was still ahead 20-10 at the half. NJMS Lady Jags pick up where they left off by beating Four Oaks 45-16 The Lady Jags outscored Four Oaks 12-4 in the third quarter and 13-2 in the final stanza for the 45-16 result. Leading scorers for North Johnston were Levossie Taylor with 15 points, Jordyn Scott with 11 and Blayke Batten with 10. “It was a good victory for us and a great team effort,” said Coach Pierre Bone. “Everyone contributed to the win and I was very proud of the whole team.” “Hopefully we’ll contin- ue to improve and get bet- ter every practice and every game,” said Bone. The win leaves the Lady Jags with a 6-0 overall re- cord and 3-0 in the confer- ence. The North Johnston Mid- dle School boys basketball team dropped its first con- ference game of the year to Four Oaks 42-30 on Thurs- day, Jan. 8. The Jaguars fell behind early and trailed 10-2 after one quarter and still trailed 14-10 at the half. The game was tied 25-25 after three quarters but ran out of gas in the last stanza and was outscored 17-5 for the final 42-30 total. The win improves Selma’s re- cord to 6-0. Selma scored in the first minute of play but found itself trailing 7-4 at the end of the first quarter. Benson, with some tight play and precision passing, main- tained the lead ending the first half ahead, 13-10. In the second half, Selma became more defensive with Jaidon Stokes mak- ing three steals that led to great possessions. Anthony Concil and Marquez Sim- mons played great defense disrupting a lot of what the Benson team was trying to do. That effort helped to give Selma the lead at the half- way point of the third quar- ter, a lead that lasted to the end of the quarter. Selma went into the fourth quarter leading 20- 19, extending that lead to 30-24. In the last two min- utes, Benson applied pres- sure, trailing 30-28, in the last minute of play. Selma released the pressure scor- ing with 30 seconds on the clock to go ahead 32-28. The team has also bet- tered last year’s record of 0-13. “The school, staff and stu- dents alike, were very quick to congratulate the girls on a game well played and their first win of the year!” said coach Scott Rorabaugh. “We hope the winning be- comes contagious.” Selma led throughout the entire game as it scored its highest point total of the year. Going into the second half leading 16-8, Selma had a lackluster third quarter go- ing scoreless. Benson was only able to score 2 points and in the fourth quarter Selma found its range and scored 11 points while Ben- son remained scoreless. Defensively, the 12 points scored by Benson is also the lowest number of points scored against Selma. The balanced scoring at- tack was led by Bessy Ro- jas and Yasmin Pinedo with 6 points each. Ty’Niazia Dublin scored 5, and Make- lle Bryant added 4. North Johnston Middle School Lady Jaguars de-feated Four Oaks 45-16 in basketball on Thursday, Jan 8 at home as both teams resumed their conference schedules following the Christmas break.
