How Galileo enhances positioning in your smartphones
GeoIT Navigation Talks 6h September, Berlin
Jacopo Ovarelli
Galileo is the European GNSS and GSA is in charge of „bringing it to the users”
2
Worldwide navigation system “made in EU”
Fully interoperable with GPS
Open service free of charge, delivering dual frequencies
18 satellites already launched
Initial Service Capability declared in December 2016 and ready to be used today in consumer devices
The GSA’s mission is to support European Union objectives and
achieve the highest return on European GNSS investment, in terms
of benefits to users and economic growth and competitiveness
Staff: c.a. 135
Nationalities: 21
Headquarters: Prague
Galileo implementation has reached initial services
3
18 satellites have been launched
12 satellites are in production/being procured
Initial Services
Open Service (OS)
Search and Rescue Service (SAR)
Public Regulated Service (PRS)
and demonstrator for Commercial Service (CS)
2016
Full Operational Capability
All services, 30 satellites
An independent civilian infrastructure
Galileo is implemented in a step-wise approach

2018/2019
European GNSS systems increasingly adopted by solution providers and users
4
Galileo recognized by the
International Maritime Organization
as a “World Wide Radio Navigation
System” for the use in regulated
domains
Road tolling: EGNOS already
implemented in 4 European schemes
Regulated applications: eCall and
Digital Tachograph regulations
leveraging EGNSS
EGNOS integrated in 100% of newly
sold handheld mapping devices, Galileo
widely adopted in surveying equipment
391 EGNOS based approach procedures
in 209 airports in 19 EU countries
EGNOS leadership with 72% of farmers
using GNSS, thanks to partnerships
with tractor manufacturers actively
promoting EGNOS affordable accuracy
GNSS technology has been included in the
European Railway Traffic Management
System roadmap in view of its expected
operational and safety benefits
The first European smartphone using
Galileo launched in July 2016
Galileo is increasingly supported in mobile devices
5
• July 2016: BQ Aquaris x5 was the first Galileo-enabled phones ever released
• November 2016: Huawei Mate 9
• March 2017:
• Huawei P10
• Sony Xperia XZ premium
• Samsung S8
• June 2017
• Oneplus 5

• With the release of Android Nougat in August 2016, raw GNSS measurements can be accessed in android smartphones:
‒ Pseudo-range and pseudo-range rate
‒ Navigation messages
‒ Accumulated delta range or carrier
‒ Hardware (HW) clock
• This allows to move away from the black-box concept of the GNSS receiver and opens up the possibilities of deriving more accurate positioning
GNSS Raw Measurement as enabler of innovative location based applications
7
• Objectives of the Task Force
‒ To share experiences from testing and use of GNSS raw measurements on smartphones and wearables
‒ To popularize the use of raw measurements among app developers
• Tools:
‒ Publication of white paper, containing
1. The overview on how to use GNSS raw measurements
2. What is possible today: results of testing and case studies, what are the benefits of using raw measurements vs. regular chipset outputs
3. What is coming in near future: how the raw measurements use may be extended with double frequency, carrier phase etc.
‒ Development of open source API for Android developers facilitating the use of raw measurements

Application fields impacted:
How the market will take advantage of enhanced positioning?
11
• Location-based advertising
• Augmented reality
Commercial applications
• GNSS-enabled 112 emergency call
• m-health Safety-related
• Smart mobility
• Autonomous cars Automotive
• Precision agriculture
• Mapping
Semi-professional applications
• Workforce management • Smart city asset management
• ADAS applications
“Up to 60% of ad requests contain some form of location data. Of these requests, less than ⅓ are accurate within 50-100 meters of the stated location”
“The location information and data which is currently available for mobile marketers can provide excellent value, even though there is room for greater accuracy in order to reach increasingly more granular data”
Location based advertising

Augmented reality
13
“The future of AR is very much tied to the accuracy of location data, and no rapid influx of
venture capital or sudden rush of consumer interest can advance that on its own”
David Semerad, CEO of STRV

Information and ads better targeted to POI
More precision to design buildings
Enhanced accuracy for further engage players
• Information about how to access the location of the emergency can reduce radically the time of the intervention
• Medical research indicates that one minute reduction in response time improves the odds of survival by 24%*
• The use of GNSS already enhances the caller location accuracy, but every further meter gained can save lives
GNSS-enabled 112 emergency call

Well being: • Visual impaired apps
• Tele monitoring by PERS (Personal Emergency Response Services)
Well being and sport & fitness
15
Sports and fitness • Tracking apps for both pro and consumer
segments
• Augmented reality apps
Smart mobility
16
Autonomous cars
17
• Autonomous vehicles require a level of accuracy that can enable lane decisions
• This level of accuracy is currently achievable only by applying RTK techniques to GNSS
• Dual frequency receivers can help achieving the needed accuracy without the use of RTK
Advanced driver-assistance systems applications
18
Adaptive cruise
control
Lane warning
Collision warning
(combined with V2V)
Semi-automated lane control
Semi-automated
collision avoidance
Automated platoon driving
From “specific devices intended for a professional use”
to “mass-market devices for a (semi) professional use”
