Isaac Still Loved Esau More than Jacob

• Esau married 2 Hittite women – Gen. 26:34-35– Both Isaac and Rebekah were troubled by this

selection because the worshiped false gods– By marrying from among the people God had cast off,

Esau again showed his true heart

• Isaac decided, due to his advancing years, it was time to give the blessing – Genesis 27:1-4– To Esau despite the prophesy (Gen. 25:23) and the

sale of the birthright (Gen. 25:29-34)

Rebekah’s Scheme

• Rebekah overheard Isaac’s conversation with Esau – Genesis 27:5-16– She told Jacob to kill 2 kids of the flock– She would prepare them to taste like wild game– She intended for Jacob to take the meal to his

father and receive the blessing– Jacob protested because he feared being caught,

but Rebekah said she would take the curse– She gave him Esau’s clothes to wear– She put the skins of the kids on his hands and

neck to make him feel like Esau

Jacob’s Deception

Genesis 27:17-25• Rebekah gave Jacob the food to take to his

father• Jacob lied about his identity and the reason he

came so quickly with the food• Isaac was so blind he had to ask who had

come– The voice was wrong but the clothes and skins

fooled him– So Isaac ate

The Blessing

• Isaac then called Jacob near and blessed him – Genesis 27:26-29– Surely the smell of my son is like the smell of a field

which the Lord has blessed. Therefore may God give you of the dew of heaven, of the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and wine. Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you. Be master over your brethren, and let your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, and blessed be those who bless you!

– Note: The Lord’s will was fulfilled despite the intentions of all involved.

Esau’s Despair

Genesis 27:30-46

• Esau entered soon after Jacob left

• When Esau identified himself, Isaac realized the deception which had taken place

• Esau pleaded for a blessing from his father, but the real blessing had gone to Jacob

• Esau said Jacob was properly named because – He had supplanted him in the birthright– He had supplanted him in the blessing

Jacob Sent Away

• The paltry blessing Esau received focused his anger for his brother

• Esau resolved to kill him after the mourning for his father was over

• Rebekah learned of the plot, called Jacob and had him prepare to go to her brother’s house until the anger subsided

• Rebekah convinced Isaac to send Jacob to Laban’s house to find a wife rather than have another daughter-in-law from the people around them

Genesis 28:1-9• Isaac agreed with Rebekah and sent

Jacob to Laban’s to find a wife– He also gave Jacob the blessing of Abraham

Jacob’s Ladder

Genesis 28:10-22

• Jacob spent the night at Luz– In a dream, he saw angels going up and down a

ladder which reached into heaven– God repeated the promise he had given to Abraham

• He realized the Lord was in that place and– Renamed it Bethel, which means house of God– Vowed to make the Lord his God if he would provide

for him and return him safely to his father’s house– Set up his stone pillow as a pillar in God’s true house– Promised to give 1/10 of all his blessings to the Lord
