A MEASURE OF HEART As we approach the close of another school year at John Adams Academy a troublesome fact has come to light, parent volunteer hours are at an all-time low. Many families that come to John Adams Academy state that it was because of the culture. That culture is derived out of the JAA Core Values and relies upon the integration of those values by the teachers, staff, scholars, and parents. It is hard to fathom that at an academy that prides itself on service and modeling what we teach, staff would have to put out continuous pleas for assistance with marquee events, or that teachers would have trouble getting volunteers to work in their classrooms. This begs the larger question, are we truly living up to our commitments to model servant leadership? Every parent signed an agreement when enrolling their scholar at John Adams Academy that states that the parent agrees “to support all other activities and policies contained in the Parent/Scholar Handbook.” On page 36 of the Parent/Scholar Handbook it states: “John Adams Academy asks each family to donate a minimum of 40 hour per year to the academy in the form of service… The policies and action put forward by John Adams Academy are designed to reinforce core values in an effort to more fully enrich the education of each scholar… As they perform service with their children, parents demonstrate their role as the primary and fundamental teachers by exemplifying public and private virtue.” Based on the roughly 800 families at John Adams Academy it is expected that 32,000 volunteer hours would be given this year. Sadly, as of today we have a total of 9,015 volunteer hours logged. I know that there are many families who continue to do more than their committed amount. However, the Academy, and the scholars, rely on everyone maintaining the commitments they have made to model service. We are missing a key ingredient of what makes for an upright society, honor of one’s commitments. “The Founding Fathers defined private virtue as honesty, integrity and character, in both public trusts and in one’s personal life; and public virtue as voluntarily sacrificing personal comfort or benefits for the good of the nation or community.” More important than the numbers, are the lost opportunities to make a difference in your children’s lives. Your acts of service are the priceless modelings of what you one day hope your children to become. I ask you today to take stock of your commitment and for you to measure your impact to date so that we will deliver to this generation the fruits of a servant’s heart. Please reach out to me directly if you have questions about how you can fulfill your agreement or if you have a specific challenge to providing service that you need help addressing.
