Harrietsham Gardening Society

We had an unfortunate experience at our last meeting when our Speaker was unable to attend. We had a good attendance and members were expecting a talk entitled S p inning E arth. A f ter a little while we had to im p rovi se and luckily our V ice C hairm an Kevi n Harlock had p rep ared a little hum orous p ower- p oint p resentation f or j ust such an occasion. He f ollowed this up with a resum e of the results f rom the S p ring S how.

Our thanks go to Peter Brown for setting up a video of a film about the Queen’s G arden at B uckingham P alace.

On Saturday 27 April we had an outing to the RHS garden at Hyde Hall in Essex. T he weather did not look p rom ising when we lef t, but we hop ed it would im p rove . Our first port of call was the jam factory at Tiptree. Unfortunately, when we left the coach we were nearly blown away in the strong wind. Howeve r, we all enj oye d a cup of hot coffee before resuming our journey.

A gain, when we alighted at Hyd e Hall it was ve ry windy and sp itting with rain. I t was also so cold it m ade one shive r. W e f elt ve ry sorry f or the T rade F air stalls which were one of the reasons we p icked that p articular weekend.

T here have been a lot of im p rove m ents since our last vi sit. F resh beds have been p lanted and there is a m uch- im p rove d allotm ent section. A new restaurant has been built together with an education centre. T he weather did not im p rove and eve ryo ne was glad to get back on the coach.

Perhaps next time we should go when the weather is likely to be much better. T hanks to Marj orie D arby f or organising the trip .

J ust a rem inder to all our m em bers and residents of Harrietsham that the P arish C ouncil are once again havi ng a com p etition f or the B est Hanging B asket. E ntry forms will be available from the Office, Post Office and the Co-op store. Judging to take p lace on or near to 26 Ju ly 2019 .

Our next meeting will be the Rose and Sweet Pea Show on 18 June. Schedules are ava ilable.

Harrietsham Wives GroupO ur m eeting in May was once again well attended and with another interesting sp eaker. Mary S m ith was the Head teacher at Maidstone G irls G ram m ar S chool until 2014 and during her tim e one of the ‘ trenches’ which had been dug f or the girls to use during the 2nd W orld W ar was unearthed together with a scrap book of drawings done by the then art teacher Miss Helen Keen. F ollowing the discove ry Mary had done considerable research tracking down and talking to m any of the p up ils who were at the school during the war. Living with Dementia

A t the P arish Meeting on 24 A p ril Michael S m ithson of the A lzh eim er’ s S ociety gave a highly inf orm ativ e p resentation about ‘ D em entia’ . T hose p resent were shocked to learn that dementia is now the biggest cause of death in the UK. Michael provided a sum m ary of the servi ces ava ilable to p eop le livi ng with dem entia and their carers. T hese include Hom e sup p ort servi ces, dem entia caf es, p eer sup p ort group s and a yo unger carer’ s group . D em entia can strike at any age and he rep orted that the yo ungest p erson livi ng with dem entia locally at p resent is in their 4 0s. He went on to advi se that it is good f or both m ind and body to continue in activi ties. T here are some dementia specific activities available at Mote Park Leisure Centre and he also mentioned the Mytime Active Group at Cobtree Manor Park, who offer free dementia f riendly golf p rogram m es. T here are m ore activi ties in the sum m er m onths.

Michael discussed ‘ T im e f or D em entia’ , which raises awareness am ong healthcare p rof essionals by holding talks by p eop le livi ng with dem entia them selve s to students in Universities in the region and to GPs and in Hospitals. He referred to Dementia F riends who sup p ort the idea of local buses f or com m unity group s, and p rovi de inf orm ation and training to encourage em p loye rs and others to be m ore dem entia f riendly enabling those livi ng with dem entia to continue to be active m em bers of the com m unity .

Whilst there are many different types of dementia the most prevalent are Alzheimer’s D isease and V ascular D em entia. T he latter is stroke and T I A ( m ini- stroke) related and affects the brain.

T he sym p tom s of dem entia include m em ory loss ( m ainly short- term ) , a wish to go hom e where this is an earlier hom e rather than the current one, a lack of concentration and inability to organise or p rioritise. S om etim es ability to use language and sp atial skills are affected. There can be a lack of awareness of place, date, time, season and weather releva nt to today .

Dementia affects everyone differently. A person may look the same, but their personality may change. Dementia also affects the physical health of the person. Many p eop le try to conceal their sym p tom s.

He said that whilst at p resent there is no cure, big im p rove m ents are anticip ated over the next ten years. He also said that there are some medications which slow down the progress of specific types of dementia. They provide a better quality of life but may have some side effects.

Michael advi sed p eop le livi ng with dem entia to carry p ersonal inf orm ation discreetly on them, for example, on a wristband, to enable a contact point/person to be traced if someone is lost or needs help. He also mentioned that mobile phones with GPS fitted are ve ry good f or tracking and help ing p eop le livi ng with dem entia.

He encouraged us to becom e dem entia f riendly com m unities, em p owering p eop le with dem entia and recognising their contribution. T his reinf orces the idea of ‘ livi ng with dementia’ in place of ‘suffering from dementia’.

Discovering HarrietshamI took up residence in Harrietsham I n O ctober 2018 and have been looking f orward to some warm days and sunshine to explore this lovely village and its surroundings. As a keen amateur photographer, I am delighted to find a number of particularly p hotogenic areas. S o f ar, m y f avo urite is the W oodlands W alk. T he entrance is in C hurch R oad, op p osite the V illage Hall. A calm and p eacef ul oasis a f ew m inutes’ walk away, it has a beautiful lake with waters of a soft aquamarine colour, floating dove cotes ( see the f ront cove r) and a va riety of beautif ul birds including swans, ducks, coots, m oorhens and, of course, dove s. S om e benches by the lake m ake it a perfect spot in which to relax and forget the stresses of the day. Please read the notices on site about f eeding the birds.

I like to walk and enj oy the countrysi de and it seem s there are f ootp aths, rights of way and bridle paths in abundance leading off every lane. I can’t resist exploring them and I ’ ve f ound som e love ly sp ots.

Top Tips5 5D ialling ’ 5 5 ’ during a 9 9 9 call will not enable the em ergency servi ces to track yo ur location.

A ccidental 9 9 9 calls hap p en all the tim e, but op erators m ay be unable to tell if a silent call is a real call f or help . T he em ergency servi ces receive m illions of calls eve ry ye ar, m ost of which result in a request being m ade f or em ergency servi ces such as police, fire or ambulance to attend. But, around 30 million calls a year do not f ollow the usual p attern, with no one sp eaking on the call. However, The Home Office has had (or at least it did as of July this year) a system in p lace called S ilent S olutions, which help s callers, such as dom estic abuse vi ctim s, who cannot speak to an operator:• If you have been able to signal that your call is an emergency, by coughing af ter dialling 9 9 9 , then yo u will be p ut through to the p olice.• If you are in danger, you could be asked to dial a number, for example, “55” or to give any other indication whilst on the line, otherwise the call could be term inated.• If you make a 999 call but you are not able to speak, if, for example, someone is in your house, then the 999 control room will give yo u instructions in order to indicate to them that yo u are in need of help and that the call has not been m ade in error.• Generally any sort of sound that the BT operator is not sure about will result in p assing the call to the P olice, eve n if the caller hangs up f or whateve r reason bef ore they are connected. A TM P I N N umb er Reversal h oax emailWe have been alerted to a hoax email that has been circulating purporting to originate f rom C rim estop p ers. I t claim s that if yo u enter yo ur p in num ber in reve rse into a cash p oint the p olice will be sent to yo ur location. T his inf orm ation is not true. T his em ail did not originate with C rim estop p ers. I ts content is f alse.

I f yo u receive this em ail or a sim ilar one, p lease ignore it. T he advi ce contained in the em ail is f alse, so there is no reason to f orward the em ail onto anyo ne else.

Christian MessageO ur B ishop , the R t R ev T revo r W illm ott retired in May . D uring the 9 ye ars of his m inistry in C anterbury he has becom e f airly well known in the L en V alley and has confirmed many of our church members.

I n his f arewell E aster letter to the D iocese B ishop T revo r wrote that the story of E aster is not a f airy story but a story of hop e. I t is the hop e f rom which all others take their m eaning. I n his words, ‘ it is not a wishy- washy p henom enon, but the concrete assurance of a vi ctory already won.’ ‘ V ain op tim ism ,’ he went on, ’ will not solve the divisions of our age nor will the temptation to give in to despair’. Quoting the ep istle to the Hebrews, the B ishop wrote ‘ F aith is the assurance of things hop ed f or, the convi ction of things not seen.’

He m aintained that the C hurch is called to be a beacon of hop e in our p arishes and com m unities. Hop e is hard and it is always costly to those who seek the way of reconciliation, j ustice and truth. ‘ F aith is the gif t of G od to his p eop le’ , continued the B ishop , ‘ and the church is called to live and em body the kind of hop e m ade real by faith – life changing concrete hope. Though we, the Diocese may be small in number and financially challenged, we must not give in to despair. We are people of hop e.’

B ishop T revo r com m ented on the stories he has heard of those engaged in church-run f ood banks, night shelters and debt advi ce centres. ‘ I hear’ , he wrote, ‘ of p eop le com ing to f aith through sim p le and honest hum an contact and com p assion.’

A s we in the L en V alley look back with gratitude to the m inistry of B ishop T revo r and Mrs W illm ott let’ s p ray f or his retirem ent and heed his call to be a beacon of hop e.
