How Do I Apply For a Scholarship?

• Be prepared • Read everything twice!• Get someone to read and critique your

application.• Be truthful• Be relevant• Stay on topic• Send EVERYTHING they ask for and

NOTHING they don’t ask for.

Components Considered

• Clubs and Sports• Community Service• Work experience• Grades• Income• Letters of Reference• The ESSAY

Clubs, Sports, and School Involvement

• Yes they DO matter!!!• Be descriptive and play them up.• Focus on leadership positions you’ve held• You HAVE been involved, just think:

– Tutoring?– Teacher Aid?– Picking up trash?– Event participation?– Helping teachers or staff?– What have you done to benefit your school?

Community Service

• Yes it DOES matter• Specifically focus on community

service that relates to your career/educational goals!!!

• Be descriptive and play it up!• Also focus on leadership roles you may

have take on.

Work Experience

• This is your real world experience• Be descriptive and play up your:

– Accomplishments– Leadership roles (i.e. training new hires)– Job description

• If your School Involvement and Community Service are lacking because you work SO much. Make sure you mention this in your essay!

Grades & Income

• Don’t ALWAYS matter!• Every scholarship is different &

requirements will vary.• Don’t assume anything about your grades

or income before READING the scholarship requirements!

Letters of Reference• REALLY matter!!!• Another way for reader to get to know you.• Does the person you ask really know you and your story

AND does he/she really have nice things to say about you?

• Give the person you ask an academic resume– summary of your goals, current academic standing, and work,

community service, & school involvement history • Give the person you ask PLENTY of time to complete

their letter for you and be clear about the deadline & method in which the letter is to be sent (give to you or mail?).– Give them a friendly reminder a day or two before the deadline.

The ESSAY

• Matters VERY much!!• Be clear and concise• Answer ONLY the questions asked.• Stay within the allotted word limit

– +/- a word or two won’t matter.

• DO NOT cut and paste your UC Personal Statement onto your scholarship application!

Reread the Essay

• Once to specifically to make sure you’ve answered the questions.

• Twice to look for grammatical Errors.• A third time to review the flow of writing

» THEN

• Have someone else read your essay

Sample Essay Questions

• Give an example of how your life experiences have shaped your career goals.

• How will this scholarship money benefit you?

• What are your academic and career goals? Why?

• What do you envision yourself doing in 10 years?
