BRIEF HIGHLIGHTS FROM
THE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST’S
GENERAL SYNOD 30 Great gains were made at the United
Church of Christ’s General Synod 30. Several resolutions passed. Three in
particular were initially affirmed by our Conference’s 2014 Annual Meeting:
Boycotts, divestment, and sanctions of corporations benefiting from
Israel’s occupation of Palestine. This resolution also calls for the church-wide
study of the Kairos Palestine document, issued by Palestinian
Christians in 2009 and continued interfaith dialogue with representatives of
the Abrahamic faiths.
Dismantle the New Jim Crow.
Changing the name of the Washington Redskins football team.
In addition, the proposed changes to the constitution and bylaws
were not approved by the Synod. Here is an excerpt from a UCC article on
the current leadership structure:
“For the time being, the leadership of the United Church of Christ will
remain in its current structure. Delegates voted down a proposal to the
constitution and bylaws of the UCC on Tuesday, June 30, that would have
shifted leadership of the national setting from the current four-person
collegium structure to one general minister and president….Sixty-one
percent of the delegates (401 votes in favor, 249 opposed and 23
abstentions) voted in favor of the proposed changes — short of the
necessary two-thirds vote. The proposed bylaw change came from the UCC
Board of Directors, which approved the measure at its March board
meeting, along with a another package of suggested bylaw revisions
related to withdrawal rates from endowment funds...The issues raised by
opponents centered around the process of bringing the proposed changes
forward— the need for more dialogue and conversation among settings of
the church — the model of leadership under one person and the future of
Justice and Witness Ministries after the retirement of the Rev. M. Linda
Jaramillo in September. "I do not believe the proposals pass the smell test,”
said the Rev. John. R. Deckenback, conference minister of the Central
Atlantic Conference of the UCC.“

MISSION OF THE CHURCH The Mission of Peoples Congregational United
Church of Christ is:
To worship God and preach the gospel of Je-
sus Christ, and to labor for peace and justice
so that the world may become the kingdom
of God on earth;
To foster within its membership, by its teaching
and its ministry, the spirit which was in Christ;
To be to its membership and the community a
source of spiritual refreshment, guidance,
transformation, comfort and support;
To impress upon its membership the need for
mutual loyalty and charity;
To teach its young people the noble traditions
of its past; to point them to the possibilities of
its future, and to give guidance in the build-
ing of Christian character; and
To educate and develop its members for
consecrated and sacrificial service.
VISION OF THE CHURCH “…so we, who are many, are one body in Christ
and individually we are members of one anoth-
er.” (Romans 12:5 NRSV)
Peoples Congregational United Church of Christ
is a progressive Christian community called by
faith, led by hope, and united by love to build
strong and committed disciples for Jesus Christ
and to be a spiritual presence locally and global-
ly in service to humanity. This vision is lived out
through our focus on relationship with the Lord,
which produces perspective; scholarship in study
of the Scriptures, which produces focus; steward-
ship awareness in our giving and sharing which
produces trust; and fellowship with our sisters and
brothers in Christ, which produces unity.
“Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, so
that a runner may read it, for there is a vision for
the appointed time…” (Habakkuk 2:2-3 NRSV)
