A year of remarkable members’ events culminated with the 2012 Jazz Institute Annual Members’ Meeting on Sunday, December 9th. Almost 200 Jazz Institute members and guests enjoyed light refreshments and engaging conversation during a pre-meeting reception in the Gidwitz lobby of the Riva and David Logan Center for Performing Arts at the University of Chicago.

The formal program took place in the acoustically impressive Performance Hall. Joe Glossberg, President of the Board of Directors thanked outgoing Board members Reed Badgley, Ken Chaney, Ross Kooperman, and Nadim Kazi for their outstanding service and welcomed incoming board members Jason Koransky, Janice Gonzales and Conrad Terry as well as renewing board members

Executive Director Lauren Deutsch gave the 2012 annual report, emphasizing the work we do with young people, including the new NextGenJazz program at the Drake Hotel. Our partnerships with teachers, students, musicians and audience define our commitment to helping our jazz community continue to thrive.

Membership Director, Nike’ Basurto thanked the members for their support. She highlighted the healing and transformative nature of jazz, the organization’s unique approach to programming and education, and the genuine mutual affection of people in the jazz community as reasons to continue supporting the Jazz Institute and to encourage other to join.

Following the formal program, Jazz Links Student Council founding member, Marquis Hill and his Blacktet performed, impressing the audience with their musical muscle. The quintet featured Marquis Hill, (trumpet), Christopher McBride (alto saxophone), Joshua Moshier (piano), Jeremy Cunningham (drums), and Charles Kirchman (bass).

“This was simply a wonderful event! I had such a good time chatting with friends and the music was phenomenal.” said longtime JIC member and volunteer Howard Courtney.

Be on the lookout for more engaging and entertaining JIC members’ events throughout 2013!

“Practicing What They Teach.”

Quite possibly the only band of its kind in the country,

Noteworthy Jazz Ensemble is an ensemble comprised of

Chicago Public School music teachers, many of whom are

also the jazz band directors at their schools. The idea to form

a band came about as an outgrowth of the Jazz Institute

of Chicago’s Jazz Links Teachers Advisory Council. After

suggesting that they could create an opportunity to “practice

what they teach” the band grew quickly from an octet to a

burgeoning big band. The ensemble members see the possibility

for establishing Noteworthy as a model for music teachers

across the country, especially as a tool to increase and build

awareness and advocacy for arts education.

This month, Noteworthy will travel to Peoria, IL to perform

and present at the Illinois Music Education Association

Conference (IMEA). Noteworthy will work with music

educators from throughout the state in a panel discussion

format to discuss how the unique ‘teacher ensemble’ model can

benefit both classroom and personal music practices.
