    Today’s Second Collection

“Faith...helps us build our societies in such a way that they can journey towards a future of hope.”

    - Lumen Fidei (51)

This week’s second collection is for the 135

    th annual national

    BLACK & INDIAN MISSION COLLECTION.

Our support of this collection helps build the Church in African American, Native American, and Alaska Native communities from coast to coast.

Schools, parish religious education programs, and diocesan ministries all depend this collection to help them spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The funds are distributed as grants to dioceses throughout the United States, supporting and strengthening evangelization programs which otherwise would cease. Your contributions will enable our Missions to form children in the faith, educate young people, and build hope – a hope often very hard to find in the many areas the missionaries serve.

  • LIVING DONOR URGENTLY NEEDED On the last Sunday of June, at Sacred Heart Church, ten new members of our Catholic Community were baptized into the Faith. Among them is Genevie Luna Garcia, a 6 month old baby girl born with biliary atresia, a rare and progressive disease of the liver and bile ducts that occurs in infants.

When a baby has biliary atresia, bile flow from the liver to the gallbladder is blocked, causing bile to be trapped inside the liver, quickly causing damage and scarring of the liver cells (cirrhosis), and eventually liver failure.

Biliary atresia cannot be treated with medication. Doctors perform the Kasai procedure (an operation to re-establish bile flow from the liver into the intestine) -the Kasai procedure is not a cure for biliary atresia, but, if successful, it can allow the baby to grow and have fairly good health for several, sometimes many, years. Unfortunately the procedure is not successful for up to 40% of the children who undergo it. In these cases, a liver transplant is needed to save the child’s life. Genevie was diagnosed when she was 5 weeks old and 3 days later she underwent the Kasai procedure. The surgery initially allowed her to grow stronger, but it is no longer working. She has been hospitalized twice and is currently in the children's hospital waiting for a liver donor.

A living donor can donate a portion of their liver and that piece will save Genevie's life and grow with her as her own liver. The liver is a regenerative organ so the donor's liver will start growing back immediately and replace the donated section in a short period of time.

Genevie desperately needs to find a donor match. Anyone willing to find out if they are a match is asked to complete the online form at: www.montefiore.org/live-donor-form Please enter Genevie Garcia in the field: “Name of person you want to donate to:”

There is a Facebook page set-up for her donor search that you can link to from our Parish FB Page or by using Facebook’s search for: Genevie Luna Garcia-Chavez Donor Search

If the prospect of being a donor yourself is not possible, we ask that you please share this information with your family, friends and social networks. Please keep baby Genevie and her family in your prayers.

We have included an article about Montefiore’s living donor program in this bulletin edition.

Genevie Luna Garcia was baptized at

Sacred Heart Church on June 30, 2019.

POPE JOHN PAUL II VIGOROUSLY AFFIRMED ORGAN DONATION AS A BEAUTIFUL ACT EXPRESSING THE CULTURE OF LIFE,

“The Gospel of Life is to be celebrated above all in daily living, which should be filled with self-giving love for others…

Over and above such outstanding moments, there is an everyday heroism, made up of gestures of sharing, big or small, which build up an authentic culture of life.

A particularly praiseworthy example of such gestures is the donation of organs, performed in an ethically acceptable manner,

with a view to offering a chance of health and even of life itself to the sick who sometimes have no other hope.”

    (Evangelium Vitae, No. 86)

  • NY ORGAN DONOR RATES ARE RISING,

    BUT MORE ARE NEEDED.

As of January, there were over 113,000 people in the U.S. waiting for an organ transplant, and every 10 minutes, another person is added to the list. 22 lives are lost each day due to the shortage of available organs for recipients. But the news is not all bad, and you can play a part in making it even better.

MORE DONORS ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE

In recent years, New Yorkers have increased their organ donor rates from 17% to 30%. This is still lower than the national average, but thanks to advocacy and awareness campaigns fostered by multiple organizations there is reason to be optimistic. Registering to become a donor has never been easier and can be done at your local DMV office or online in a matter of minutes. Registering places you in the donor pool so that after your death, whatever organs or tissues you choose to make available can be quickly matched to save up to eight lives.

Another way to save one or more lives is to become a living donor. Currently there are nearly 6,000 living donations per year - about 4 of every 10 transplants. You may have heard about family members donating a kidney to a relative, or even a friend-to-friend donation, but there is an increasing category of living donor

known as the altruistic donor. The altruistic donor is one who offers to donate, usually a kidney or portion of their liver, to any patient in need. Whether or not donor and recipient know one another, a living donation can set off a chain reaction, saving multiple lives as organs are donated and matched to recipients in a swap that can involve many donor/recipient pairs. Even when a donor is not compatible with a specific recipient, they can take part in a swap, also called an exchange, where the incompatible donor’s organ is exchanged with the organ from another donor and recipient pair. Your donation, either to a loved one or a stranger, will accelerate the process of finding one or more matches and saving one or more lives.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A LIVING DONOR

Living donors come from different age groups and all walks of life. Donors are carefully screened to insure the best outcome as the transplant team looks for any issues that might impact the viability of the donor organ or the recovery and health of the donor. In addition to a detailed medical assessment, the transplant team will counsel the donor about anything they need to prepare for the surgery, and connect the donor with support groups and other individuals who have participated in organ donation so they can receive other perspectives and get answers to their questions.

    THE FIRST STEP

The first step for anyone interested in becoming a living donor is to reach out to a transplant center such as world-renowned Montefiore Einstein Center for Transplantation. Montefiore has one of the nation’s longest running kidney transplant programs, with over 60 years of experience, and has performed liver transplants for over 10 years, with some of the best outcomes in the nation for both procedures.

Montefiore offers all options including multi-organ transplants in both children and adults. With their multi-disciplinary teams providing personalized, state-of-the-art, pre- and post-transplant care in a compassionate, patient-centric environment, Montefiore is now the only organ transplantation center providing evaluation and consultation locations in Rockland, Bergen, Westchester and Morris Counties.
