Carolyn Van Wyk, daughter of Aaron & Amber Van Wyk. We ask for God’s blessing on this family!

CHURCH FAMILY Conrad Van Maaren continues to be in skilled care at the VA Hospital in

Des Moines for another few weeks. He is still getting the IV antibiotic but is enjoying being able to get out of his room and walk the hall. He would love a phone call as there are no visitors allowed (not even family) and he is quite bored. His phone # is 641-521-4086.

Caleb Johnson, age 11, son of Jennifer (Chuck and Deb Johnson’s grandson) underwent back surgery on Friday, May 29th at the Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City. Surgery went well! Caleb will stay in the hospital for a few days. He will have to wear a brace for 6 weeks, and then have the next 6 months to a year for the bone graft to stabilize. His mom Jennifer thanks the church for their prayers!

Pray for our President, Leaders, Hospital staff, pastors, our sick and shut ins.

The AED Defibrillator is located in the church office on the 2nd shelf on east wall

“Practical Faith for an Isolated World” Nehemiah 4:6-12

Pastor Wayne Sneller 9:30 a.m. June 7, 2020 When you feel like giving up!

God lets us experience the things that happen in a broken world.

Some of us here today in worship or listening to this message have had setbacks in life and are discouraged.

The story of Nehemiah illustrates both the causes and cures for dis-couragement. This is a story of rebuilding the city wall around Jerusa-lem.

4 Common setbacks that cause discouragement.

1. When something takes __________ than expected this causes ___________. “The workers are getting tired…we will never be able to build the wall by ourselves.” Nehemiah 4:10a When you are tired, you are _____________ to all kinds of things. When you are weary ____________ will attack you. 2. When something is more ____________ than expected this causes ______________. “…there is so much rubble to be moved.” Nehemiah 4:10b Many times ___________ through a career or a marriage or life.

_________________ sets in! “Come, Lord, and show me your mercy, for I feel helpless, overwhelmed, and in deep distress.” Psalm 25:16(LB)

3. When I start to doubt my own __________. This causes a sense of ____________. “…we will never be able to build the wall by ourselves.” Nehemiah 4:10c Examples today – Why did I take this job? Why did I make this

move? Why did I get married? How do you handle __________? How do you handle a

_____________?

4. When the opposition grows __________. This causes ________. “Meanwhile our enemies are threatening to kill us in order to stop this work.” Nehemiah 4:11 If you are discouraged, if you hang out with negative people, if you

listen constantly to negative chatter, it is going to infect you with ____________!

What ____________ fear is causing you to be discouraged? Before you give up do the 3 things Nehemiah did: 1. ______________ whatever is not working? “So I stationed armed guards at the most vulnerable places of the wall…” Nehemiah 4:13 God is saying “You may be doing the ____________ thing; you’re just

doing it the ____________ way.” 2. _________ on God. “Then I looked over the situation….Remember the Lord, who is great and glorious.” Nehemiah 4:14a Many times we get so busy working for God, you’ve ____________

God. 3. ______________ the discouragement. “When I had lost all hope I turned my thoughts once again to the Lord.” Jonah 2:7 What do I remember when I’m discouraged? I remember these

three things. 1. God’s _____________ to me in the past. 2. God’s _____________ to me in the present. 3. God’s _____________ to me in the future!

We are in a spiritual battle. We’re in _______________ every day of our life. We are in a supernatural struggle and Satan is our accuser. His two favorite weapons are _____________ and ____________________. But we have Jesus Christ who has already won the battle for us and who gives us the strength to overcome! Remember to refocus on Him. Amen.
