    Evaluation and impact assessment. IVCOs really want toshow that theyre making a difference which is much morepositive than impact assessment just for donor reporting

    Tony then discussed possible challenges for the future such as gender,exclusion and what distinctive contribution could IVCOs make toeliminating poverty by 2025?

    These are some of the key points raised in groupdiscussion:

    Although IVCOs have broken the mouldmany people dont know that it has beenbroken so there is a huge PR challenge foragencies

    There is a mixed picture of diverse activities

    rather than a crystallised new model. Lots ofyounger volunteers, older volunteers, shorterterm placements, online etc.

    Volunteers tend to be with us for a fixedperiod of time, they then leave. How do westay connected with this population? They area trained resource

    Peace CorpsJodyOlsen, Deputy Director (Peace Corps), gave a presentation onthe work of Peace Corps as 2006 is the organisations 45thanniversary. She gave information on their history, their missionsand goals, recruitment, volunteer service, host countries and theirapproach to development.

    Jody then directed delegates to the Peace Corps website as a

    resource for languages, recruitment materials andevaluation materials.

    The Work of UNV

    Online VolunteeringThe online volunteering service connects development organisations andvolunteers worldwide over the internet and supports their onlinecollaboration. Volunteers complete tasks over the internet and it is a usefultool for engaging volunteers who cannot travel.

    World Volunteer WebThe World Volunteer Web is a volunteeringresource site hosted by UNV. It provides links

    to a variety of information, databases oforganisations, forums and blogs, and a bankof stories and perspectives.

    Volunteer InfrastructureUNV presented the four key points of theirvolunteering infrastructure:

    Reach a common understanding ofvolunteerism and a shared

    appreciation of its value. Establish and nurture an enabling

    environment. Adopt a diversity of approaches to

    mobilising and facilitating volunteerism Ensure sustainable funding

    Collaboration and Cooperation

    JOCV

    Naoko Yago, Programme Officer (JICA/JOCV), presented JOCVs collaborationin Africa on AIDS programmes. She explained the programme model and how itinvolves cooperation with the government, community and hospitals.

    Possible future collaborations for JOCV include Peace Corps, DED,FHI and UNFPA.

    Skillshare International and AVISkillshare International and AVI have been working inpartnership in Southern Africa for six months. DimityFifer, CEO (AVI), and Elaine Stevenson, InternationalProgrammes Manager (Skillshare International),presented to IVCO delegates this partnership. AVIrecruits volunteers which are then supported bySkillshare in the host country. Skillshare Internationalmanages AVIs Africa programme.

    Dimity described the partnership as an evolving,emergent relationship. Elaine said that strongerpartnershipswill add voice for social change. Theyboth stressed that the partnership benefited fromboth parties having similar values, and communicationand trust.
