2021 DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY (DOE)

REGULATORY CHANGES FOR IN-GROUND RESIDENTIAL POOL PUMPS

1. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulatory changes for dedicated-purpose pool pumps (DPPP) affect what can be manufactured after July 19, 2021.

» This is a DOE-driven initiative EVERY manufacturer will be required to comply with

» The purpose is to meet new legislative energy-efficiency standards

2. Affects SOME (not all) single-speed pumps. » Important: All Hayward Super Pump and

MaxFlo XL single-speed pumps 1 HP and lower meet the new DOE energy-efficiency standards

» Single-speed pump options: » All 1 HP and lower MaxFlo XL models

are fully compliant » All 1 HP and lower Super Pumps—the

world’s best-selling single-speed pumps—are fully compliant and will continue to be manufactured. Great news!

» If a VSP is needed: » Hayward variable-speed pumps (higher

than 1 HP) are the most energy-efficient on the market, as measured by the new DOE weighted energy factor (WEF) standards. Great news!

3. Responsibility for compliance falls on manufacturers. Dealer inventory and customer purchasing will not be directly affected.

» July 19, 2021 is the date non-compliant pumps will no longer be manufactured

» After July 19, 2021, dealers can still buy the older pumps and install them, as long as they can find available inventory

» Customers will not have to return product—and they won’t want to, because the non-compliant models will likely be in high demand from dealers who like their performance and relatively low cost

4. Most above-ground (ABG) products will NOT be affected. Still working through the details—we will provide specifics in the coming months.

A Snapshot of the Upcoming DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY DEDICATED PURPOSE POOL PUMP (DPPP) FEDERAL ENERGY EFFICIENCY REGULATIONS

What does this regulation mean for pool pumps?Pool pumps manufactured for use in and imported for use into the U.S. after July 19, 2021, must meet new minimum efficiency standards.

Are the new minimum efficiency standards the same for all pumps?

a. No. What we typically call an inground pump will be classified as self-priming. Self-priming pumps will be categorized as large and small. Each have different efficiency requirements.

i. Large inground filter pumps (self-priming)—These are typically 1 horsepower (HP) and greater. A variable speed pump is the only pump that will meet the minimum performance requirement based upon today’s current technology.

ii. Small inground filter pumps (self-priming)—These are typically 0.5 HP and 0.75 HP. Highly efficient single-speed or two-speed pumps should meet the minimum performance requirements. Note: The new regulations establish much higher efficiency standards. The majority of existing single-speed pumps will not meet the new minimum requirements.

b. What we typically call an aboveground pump will be classified as non-self-priming. While less stringent than inground pumps, they must still meet new minimum efficiency standards.

i. Aboveground filter pumps (non-self-priming)— An energy-efficient, single-speed or two-speed pump should meet the minimum performance requirements. See above note (aii) regarding the higher efficiency standards.

c. Pressure cleaner booster pumps also have minimum performance requirements.

i. Energy-efficient, single-speed booster pumps should meet the new efficiency requirements. See above note (aii) regarding the higher efficiency standards.
