In order to do so, we need your help and so I ask that you give careful attention to the directions listed below. I remind all parents that Orange City Council has imposed “no pedestrian or cycle access” as a condition of the development. Please do not park outside the school and walk in. It has been a wonderful start to the year here. The school is looking

terrific after the rain and lots of work from our grounds staff, the staff

are well prepared, the new classrooms are looking great and the

students have returned full of news and enthusiasm for the new

year.

Student Safety

At Orange Grammar we aim to provide a safe environment for all

who come onto the campus. In order to do so, we need your help

and so I ask that you give careful attention to the directions listed below. Together we share

in this very important responsibility and your help will be greatly appreciated.

I remind all parents that Orange City Council has imposed “no pedestrian or cycle access”

Homework Club

Homework Club will start in Week Four on Tuesday 17th February from 3.15-4pm in Ms Winters

room. Please email Ms Winters to secure a position for your child/children. Children are

collected from the old Kiss and Drop area at 4pm. This is only offered for children from Year 1-

Year 6. Please note the change of day for 2015.

Private Instrumental Lessons 2015

Instrumental Tuition Agreements have been sent home via email, but hard

copies will be available on Friday 30th January from the office. Please

complete both sides of the form and return to school as soon as possible.

Lessons will begin in Week 2 of the term, with the exception of Ms Gregory’s

(flute) which will begin in Week 3.

Students wishing to continue the hire of a school instrument are asked to complete a

Instrument Hire Agreement for 2015 and return with tuition agreements.

Beginner Violin Classes

Any K-2 students interested in learning violin in either Semester 1 (Terms 1 and 2) or Semester 2

(Terms 3 and 4) are asked to contact Mrs Dwyer to have secured a place. There is no cost

associated with the classes and violins are provided. Lessons are in small groups of

approximately 5 children, are 30 minutes in length, and are designed to give students the

experience of the instrument.

Band 2015

Details as to rehearsal times will be available soon.

Beginner Band Tutorials

These will begin in Week 2, with students being given their instruments, timetable and band

book at their first tutorial.

Tuesday – percussion, clarinet

Wednesday – trombone, euphonium, trumpet

Thursday – flute

Students will be collected for their tutorial.

New Instrumental Ensembles

This year will see the introduction of String Ensemble, Flute Choir and Reed Choir to join the

continuing Brass Choir. Enquiries to the writer, please.

Students at Orange Grammar can choose to participate in Duke of Edinburgh Award

Scheme. The Award is an enriching program that challenges young people between the

ages of 14 and 25 to participate in a number of activities over a set length of time.

Participation is entirely voluntary and is structured so Participants can design their own unique

program centered around their interests and passions.

The 2015 Orange Colour City Running Festival is fast approaching and OAGS would like to

enter a team or two! Early Bird entries close this weekend so now is a great time to take

advantage of reduced entry fees.

The Orange Colour City Running Festival is an annual event coordinated to promote health

and fitness and raise money to donate to local charities.

The Cadia Valley Operations School Challenge requires a minimum of five team members.

Each team member must register and participate in the 5 km run/walk held on Sunday 1st

March 2015 at 10:30am.

General Information about the team event:

Prizes for school teams include:

o Primary: An Electrolux Fridge and a $50 Mitre 10 voucher.

o Secondary: Two return flights to Sydney with REX and a $50 Mitre 10 voucher.

There is a lucky draw prize of a bike voucher for Ron Boulton Cycles. One each will be

awarded to a randomly selected primary and secondary school entrant.

The start and finish is located at the Bloomfield Leisure Centre, Forest Road, Orange.

Bib collection is preferred on Saturday the 28th of February from 11:00am – 3:00pm

from Bloomfield Leisure Centre or from 6:30am on race day.

Standard - $10

o 13 Years and over:

In April 2014, Orange Anglican Grammar School launched Will’s Garden under the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. It is great to know funds received from their Live Life Well at School Support Grant contributed to the building of this wonderful garden! A terrific example of community engagement. Working bees, local business sponsorship, support from parents, volunteers & staff, have provided students with a valuable learning environment. Regularly timetabled classes enable students the opportunity to grow healthy produce in the garden and use it to prepare healthy delicious food in the Food Tech Rooms.

School Principal, Len Eliot sites numerous benefits to students such as

“Our students have learned to build & maintain a garden according to organic principles, and to grow and harvest a wide variety of vegetables & herbs.

The creation and care of the garden has taught students about the natural world, its wonders and beauty and how to cultivate & care for it.

In the kitchen, students have prepared a range of dishes from the seasonal produce they’ve grown. They shared meals with teachers and volunteers, enjoying each other’s company.

Experiences in the kitchen & garden classes support and extend learning across subjects such as English, Mathematics and Science. Students learn to calculate, measure, analyse and articulate their experiences in a real-life context as they engage with new cultures, leading to intercultural understanding.”

Parents are kept in touch with garden & kitchen activities via newsletters & an online blog. Partnership with a local café has further promoted healthy eating with a weekly canteen arrangement. It’s exciting to hear in 2015 this initiative will see the lunch orders include food harvested from Will’s Garden.

The AwArd – whAT is iT?

THE DUKE OF ED

The Award is an enriching program that invites young people between the ages of 14 and 25 to participate in a number of activities over a set length of time. Participation is entirely voluntary and is structured so Participants can design their own unique program centered around their interests and passions. The Award is available to all young people aged between 14 and 25. There are three levels to The Award: Bronze/Silver/Gold. Each level of The Award has four mandatory Sections:

Fitness/Physical recreation Break a sweat and improve your physical fitness. This could be through a team sport, individual pursuit or simply getting out there and working up a sweat.

Skill Unleash your talents and broaden your abilities.Anything from refereeing, to DJing to learning a musical instrument, to jewellery making. Do your thing.

Volunteering Connect with your community and realise your passions. Any area of interest in the community, such as youth work, the environment or charity work.

adventurous Journey Discover your sense of adventure and bond with your mates. A journey into an unfamiliar environment with a group – bushwalking, canoeing, cycling, an urban adventure – staying overnight and testing your resilience.

residential Project Broaden your horizons and open your eyes to the world. in Australia or anywhere around the globe, limited only by your imagination.

for each Section, the Participant must select and undertake an activity that fits in with the purpose of that Section, for the minimum amount of time specified for their chosen level. for example, a Participant may choose swimming for fitness/Physical recreation, drumming for Skill, assisting at a child care centre for Volunteering and a hiking expedition for Adventurous Journey. At every level, each Participant must be the required age, and must undertake the minimum required commitment for each Section, in order to achieve their chosen Award. A Participant does not have to achieve the Bronze and/or Silver Award in order to undertake the Gold Award, however they must meet the minimum age requirements. for every level of The Award, a Major Section must be chosen. This means that a Participant must choose to undertake their activity for either fitness/Physical recreation, Skill or Volunteering for an additional length of time. The additional length of time differs depending on the level. Please see following chart for details. The framework for The Award is:

Plus for the Major Section All Participants must complete an additional
