“Real money in the banking system of banked economies like India is better than phoney-money in market economies like America” said renowned columnist & commentator Shri S. Gurumurthy. If the estimated real money that would be printed globally by 2020 is USD 9 Trillion, the market's phoney money that will be generated is USD90 Trillion and bank decisions based on such phoney-money will be disastrous and that BASEL norms are irrelevant to India. Commending on the role of PSBs in the JAN DHAN YOJANA scheme and during the process of demonetisation, he was critical of the PSB employees in their enforced illiteracy on core banking policy issues and their excessive focus on peripheral issues.

In the opening lecture, Dr. Anantha Nageswaran, Regional Economist & Consultant from Singapore spoke on Indian PSBs as Regional Economic Engines. His prognosis was on the growing scope for Indian PSBs due to the relatively lower banking assets to GDP ratio and that Indian PSBs have outlived their traditional purpose and need to re-orient to newer opportunities to become regional powers.

Following this, Prof. R. Vaidyanathan, Former IIM, Bangalore Professor & SASTRA University Cho S.Ramaswamy Visiting Chair Professor of Public Policy made a clarion call for the integration of non-banking financial institutions into mainstream financial eco-system and adviced PSBs to partner and not marginalise them.

The final speaker, Dr. K. E. Seetharam, a senior specialist from Asian Development Bank, Manila redefined the purpose of Indian PSBs as social & public infrastructure builders to create extreme development effectiveness. This conclave was attended by over 300 delegates from the banking & financial services industry, academics and students from different institutions including SASTRA.

Dr.S.Vaidhyasubramanim, Dean – Planning & Development, SASTRA while laying down the context for the event shared the need for employees of the PSBs to be mindful of the positive role of Indian PSBs in the growth story of India.

Dr. Bibek Debroy, Member, NITI Aayog, delivered the first Cho S. Ramaswamy Memorial Lecture on public policy as a tool for national development at SASTRA University on February 25, 2017.

Delivering the lecture, Dr. Debroy said that the present generation is the custodian of India, which is a trust that needs to be handed over to the next generation in 2035 with great care. The role of public policy ought to be defined as what we as citizens collectively do towards that.

Elaborating on the abstract nature of the term 'public policy,' he said that though the term has a wide range of meanings, its understanding has to be gauged from the state-citizen relations in a constitutional framework. He traced the history of the constitutional thrust on public policy and illustratively examined the scope of socialism, secularism and federalism in the Constitution of India.

Dr. Debroy underscored the significance of ̀ `amendments'' to the Constitution and also spoke of their effects vis-à-vis the ground realities in Indian society. Touching upon the role of public policy in relation with the State and its instrumentalities, he said that the State was primarily concerned with security, defence and rule of law, from the earliest times.

He hailed the Smart Cities Mission as an example of the connect between public aspiration and governmental action, completing the chain of delivery for public goods and services. He said that “public policy is what you make it to be, distinguishing private and collective interests.”

Dr. S. Vaidhyasubramaniam, Dean-Planning and Development welcomed the gathering. Prof. R. Sethuraman, Vice-Chancellor, SASTRA University was also present.

SASTRA University presented the fifth edition of The New Indian Express annual education event, ThinkEdu 2017 Conclave on March 3 & 4, 2017, at ITC Grand Chola, Chennai.

This time too, heavy-weights from the fields of politics, academics and social activism weighed the present and the future of education in our country. Union HRD M i n i s t e r S h r i Prakash Javadekar in

his inaugural keynote address on 'My Vision for Education in India,' shared his thoughts on education in India.

Lectures on topics like 'Should there be profit in education?' and 'How do you navigate a non-traditional career path?' provided great insights.

Shri Natrajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons delivered the keynote address in the session on 'Pushing the frontiers of Indian education.' The session was moderated by Dr. S. Vaidhyasubramaniam, Dean-Planning and Development, SASTRA.

In the conversation about women's education in India on the second day, Lt Governor of Puducherry Dr Kiran Bedi and actor and activist Gautami Tadimalla participated. Also, PP Chaudhary, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice and two others, deliberated on the question 'Do our Law Schools produce world-class lawyers?'

Dr. S. Vaidhyasubramaniam, Dean-Planning and Development, SASTRA deliberated on 'How can a 'Make in India' education be made aspirational?' in a session chaired by Prof. R. Venkata Rao, Vice Chancellor, National Law School, Bangalore.

Pushing the Frontiers of EducationCHAPTER 5 OF THE NEW INDIAN EXPRESS THINKEDU CONCLAVE presented by SASTRA

Nobel Laureate Shri Kailash Satyarthi in his concluding keynote address discussed the topic, 'Are funds coming in the way of our providing good public education?'

The products of the education system are the ones which will make the 'Make in India' dream a reality. Therefore, it is important to give confidence to all education policy makers and participants to enjoy the confidence that education can be an inspirational tool to make 'Make in India,' a success.

The reports which de-brand our talent pool, like the McKinsey 2005 report and others, which say only 25 per cent of engineers are employable, are to be set aside. The higher education institutions need to function as problem solvers and not problem creators and become game changers and positive change agents.

How can a 'Make in India' Education be made aspirational?
