Term 2 is an assessment and reporting term so it means a very busy time for both staff and students and with Winter approaching the days will be colder and shorter and of course the flu season will run its inevitable course. Term 1 finished in a spray of colour with the PDHPE staff introducing a new format for the cross country carnival involving a Colour Run. Thank you to Mr Callum Lenard for his organisation of the afternoon which was a great success in terms of student and staff participation. There were lots of smiling faces at the conclusion of the event and it provided a great opportunity for building on a whole school spirit of cooperation and friendship as well as providing all students the opportunity to participate at the competitive level appropriate to their ability. Nowra High students were actively involved in representing the school at ANZAC day services across the Shoalhaven last Monday at Greenwell Point, Nowra and Huskisson. In particular I would like to acknowledge our school leaders Rhianna, James, Jenny, Milly and Harry who represented the school at the Greenwell Point dawn service as well as the Nowra service and Mikayla Barnes who represented Nowra High at the Creswell dawn service as well as the Huskisson service. Thank you to all the students who gave up their time to represent the school and show their respects on this most solemn of days. Last Friday was our ANZAC assembly in the MPH. I would like to thank Mr Ted Reksmiss, representing the Nowra-Greenwell Point Sub Branch of the RSL for his attendance and presentation of books for our library. I would also like to thank Captain Rae for attending and delivering his ANZAC address on behalf of the Australian Defence Force. A special thank you also for Mr Peter Williams who once again played the Last Post and Reveille on his bugle. Thanks must also go to the representatives of the RAN who made up the catafalque party, adding a very respectful tone to the assembly. Finally I would like to acknowledge the outstanding manner in which over 1000 Nowra High students behaved during this assembly, they showed the upmost respect and stood silent for extended periods of time, demonstrating once again why Nowra High is such an outstanding school. The Nowra High School Secondary School Renewal Program which will upgrade the administration areas of the school as well as improve public access to the main administrative building is scheduled to commence during this term. Once the building work commences there will be significant disruption to the drop-off\pick-up area of the turning circle at the front of the school. Parents will need to utilise the zone closer to the car park gates and the car park area off Brereton Street. More details will be provided once the starting date for the work is known. During August each year anticipated student enrolment numbers for the following year are calculated and submitted to the Department of Education (DoE). During February actual student enrolment numbers are determined and submitted to the DoE. The DoE uses these numbers to calculate the number of teaching and support staff to be employed by the school. For 2016 the actual student enrolment figure for Nowra High was significantly less than what was anticipated. This has resulted in a reallocation of teaching duties to minimise the impact of the reduction in the number of staff employed and has also resulted in some reduction in face to face teaching time in senior classes. With the imminent approach of cold weather it is important that students are wearing appropriate school uniform. The Nowra High School uniform provider, Daylight Sportswear, have recently launched their new online ordering system for the purchase of uniforms. This should alleviate the need for parents to visit the school through the day to purchase uniform items. Please check the full details elsewhere in the Newsletter. The school policy regarding uniform requires students not in uniform to bring in a note from home, signed by a parent or carer, to explain the reason why. This note is to be presented to a Deputy Principal by the student and an out-of-uniform pass issued. If a student is out of uniform and consistently fails to bring a note of explanation they will be treated in line with the school discipline policy regarding failure to comply with school rules. Safety concerns have been raised regarding students leaving the school grounds before school commences of a morning. Students are reminded on a regular basis during assembly that they must remain within the school grounds on arrival at school. This term a regular morning patrol by school staff has been instigated to remind students of this expectation. Students who fail to comply with the school rules will be dealt with in line with the school discipline policy. School Photos have arrived and will be issued to all students this Friday 6th May. Welcome back to Term 2, a 10 week term finishing on Friday 1st July, with the Queen’s birthday long weekend on June 11-13. Term 2 is an assessment and reporting term so it means a very busy time for both staff and students and with Winter approaching the days will be colder and shorter and of course the flu season will run its inevitable course.

Exci ng News from the Library

The library has been a hive of activity during Term 1 this year. Mrs Carol Maggs, Mrs Suzanne Grace, Mrs Debbie Little and myself have been working extensively to arrange new displays of books, provide greater access to relevant resources to staff and students, and refresh the appearance of the library. We are proud to announce our “Welcome” sign on the door which is designed to represent the languages spoken by our diverse school community. Please let us know if we have missed writing “welcome” in your language and we will add it to our colourful display as soon as possible!

Library staff would like to thank those kind students who have donated their time to assist in setting up displays, sorting books, creating signs, moving furniture and being generally extremely supportive to make their library a brighter place.

We would like to thank the Shoalhaven RSL who have honoured the ANZACs by generously donating funds to purchase new books for the library. Tasked with selecting books “which may be of use to the young people who are the same age as some of those who were sent to war”, we have selected some this year related to Science, Mathematics, Resume Writing and Career Development.

The library has also received a class set of “chromebook” laptop computers which will be utilised within the downstairs library classroom beginning this term. Also on the technology front; wiring has been added upstairs this week to enable Aurora College students greater access to learning space. Work is expected to be completed by Week 2 this term.

The library is also undertaking a big technology shift in the circulation software we use. We are training to transition our library to the new “Oliver” system which should occur by week 9 this term. Oliver will enable staff and students to search resources more thoroughly and swiftly; as well as to borrow, renew and return resources quickly and easily.

Many thanks for your kind support as I have settled in to the library this year.

The Year 9 debating team consisting of the following students Mikayla Check, Oscar Moysey, Lisa Horner and Olivia De Strang attended an invite only Mentor and Training Day at Braidwood High School on Friday 29 April 2014.

The Day was run by University of Wollongong Debating Committee. Our team participated in two debates on the day against Braidwood High School.
