for young starsTHE NAB AFL Draft Combine is about a lot more than football. Performances at colts level football and National 18s championships have elevated some of WA and Australia’s best football talent above the rest, but now the nation’s young elite need to prove themselves away from the grassy playing paddock. The next wave of 80 potential stars (who had to be nominated by at least five AFL clubs) have been invited to perform on a different kind of stage – the AFL Draft Combine from October 6-9 at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne. More than 100 additional players will be soon be named and then tested at State Combines in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane/Sydney and Perth. Athlete testing will include athleticism and football skills, as well as assessing each player’s personality and character – all essential elements clubs consider in the drafting process. Two players added to the West Coast Eagles list for 2016 featured highly in sprint testing at last year’s National Combine. In the 20m sprint testing, Kurt Mutimer, who was taken in the AFL Draft at No.57 by the Eagles was equal fastest with a time of 2.88 seconds and Jordan Snadden, who was taken at No.17 by the Eagles in the Rookie Draft was equal fifth fastest with a time of 2.94 seconds. The record in that category is 2.75 seconds which is set by Joel Wilkinson in 2010. Fremantle’s Danyle Pearce holds

the third best time in the record books after he ran it in 2.79 seconds in 2004. Mutimer, Snadden and Fremantle draftee Darcy Tucker also featured in the top four results in the clean hands test. The Matthew Lloyd clean hands test requires six takes and six handballs and must be completed in a maximum of 35 seconds. The player takes the ball and then receives a random instruction from a caller; he must then handball (6m left or right, 8m left or right and 10m left or right) to a target. The ball will be kicked to him three times and rolled at him three times. The player must jog back to the starting point after each handball. He is allocated between one (for a poor handball) and five (excellent) points for each handball. Out of a possible 30 points, Mutimer, Snadden and Tucker each scored 26. The best was 29 by Keiran Collins. Other testing includes standing vertical jump, running vertical jump, agility test, 6x30m repeat sprint, 20m shuttle run (beep test), 3km time trial, Nathan Buckley kicking test and Brad Johnson goalkicking test. Nic Naitanui (78cm in 2008) and Elliot Yeo (78cm in 2011) hold the equal seventh record in the standing vertical jump. Naitanui (102 in 2008) still holds the equal highest result in the running vertical jump, while Fremantle’s Stephen Hill remains equal fifth in that category (93cm in 2008). Hill is at the top of the record books when it comes to agility testing, having recorded a best time of 7.77 seconds in 2008. Agility testing involves a player starting from an upright position in line with a start gate. The idea is to weave in and out of the poles – without touching or knocking them over – and get to the end of the course as quickly as possible. Players run the course three times at maximum effort (with 2-3 minutes recovery between tests). The best of the three times is recorded. AFL National and International Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan said the NAB AFL Draft Combine brings the best young talent to one place for a final round of testing. “The Draft Combine is the final chance many clubs will have to see prospective players up close,” he said. “Clubs will not only watch the testing but will conduct interviews with players as they count down to the 2016 NAB AFL Draft in Sydney.”

Waterman talent runs deepWhile Jake Waterman continues to shine for the Claremont colts and prepares himself for National Combine testing, his younger brother Ben is about to attempt to swim the English Channel. Ben is one of 12 teenagers, who are in Years 9 and 10 at Churchlands Senior High School, from Barracudas Swim Club. They headed to England earlier this week and will most likely have hit the water as the Football Budget went to print. The eldest of the Waterman boys, Alec, is currently in the West Coast list, but has not played football this season due to a serious case of glandular fever.

The 12 WA players invited to the national testing:

CLAREMONTMatt Guelfi – skilful midfielder, smart at the stoppages and an excellent tacklerJake Waterman – tall forward son of Chris Waterman, so likely to go to the Eagles as a father-son selection. Played his first reserves game last weekend.Sam Petrevski-Seton – classy midfielder/half forward touted as an early draft pick

EAST FREMANTLECameron Zurhaar – forward, strong-bodied third tall forward. Presents as a lead-up option and puts on strong pressure

EAST PERTHSam Powell-Pepper – rugged midfielder/half forward with plenty of tenacity

PERTHZac Fisher - A quick, hard-working small forward/midfielder. Won WA’s MVP award for the National 18s Championships and was also named an All-AustralianQuinton Narkle - A strong-bodied inside midfielder who specialises at stoppages

SOUTH FREMANTLEShai Bolton – speedy small forward who can find the goalsTimothy English – ruck/forward who missed selection last year but likely to be sought after this year. Played his first reserves game last weekend.

SWAN DISTRICTSGriffin Logue - a strong-bodied super athlete who plays a key defensive role and can provide run from defence

WEST PERTHJosh Rotham – athletic and versatile defender who likes to run off half back Liam Baker - a small but hard-working small forward/midfielder who is footy smart and competitive

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, c/o Football Budget, PO Box 911, Subiaco WA 6904. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

Starting in 1951 and running through until 1989, the Daily News Footballer of the Year Award was certainly one of the most prestigious prizes on offer in WA. While the Sandover Medal was always considered the top prize, the Daily News’s award wasn’t far behind. And looking at the names of the winners, it’s not difficult to see why. The first was West Perth champion Fred Buttsworth, who also won the Sandover Medal and a Simpson Medal that season. Others to have taken home the award, include the likes of Graham Farmer, Haydn Bunton Jr, John Todd, Bill Walker and Barry Cable. And each and every winner got themselves a hand-drawn caricature produced by one of the Daily News’s very talented team of artists, including Bruce Wroth, Norman Aisbett and the legendary Paul Rigby. Now, clearly, the original drawings were given to the winners as their prize. I have been lucky enough to see a few of them over the years at the homes of some of those winners. So, it’s almost impossible for a collector to get hold of one. But some bright spark at WA Newspapers managed to get decent pictures of the caricatures as they were give out each year. He (or she) put together an album of those pictures. The same person also kept copies of the caricatures given to the winners of the Daily News Rookie of the Year award, which ran from 1975-1989. Those caricatures were done by the more junior artists at the paper, but the winners included Brian Adamson, Phil Krakouer, Gary Buckenara, Leon Baker, Mark Bairstow, and John Worsfold. I was recently shown both albums and, while their status as collectables is debatable given they are not originals, I imagine any WAFL collector would love to have them in their collection. Speaking of awards, Football Budget reader Gary contacted me recently looking for help with a display he was putting together to honour a family member. Gary never mentioned who the family member was, but I’m assuming he was a Sandover Medal winner because Gary wanted to know how he could get hold of a replica Sandover Medal for mounting in the display. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to help him. As we had both noted, replica Brownlow Medals aren’t particularly difficult to obtain and make great display items, especially if framed with an item belonging to a Brownlow Medal winner. But I had no luck in finding anything similar for the Sandover Medal.

Some years ago, the Sandover family, who have donated the medals each year since the first one was presented to Subiaco’s Tom Outridge in 1921, revealed that it cost about $500 to make a Sandover Medal. But surely someone has had a cheaper replica made at some stage? If anyone can help Gary, please get in touch. Or is there anyone out there who thinks themselves capable of making a decent replica? I can’t imagine there’s anyone reading this column who doesn’t know what happened to East Perth youngster Beau Chatley. A few weeks ago, he was playing reserves football for the Royals and now, as the result of a freak injury, he is in hospital and unable to walk. I’m sure everyone is hoping that will soon change. In the meantime, the outpouring of public sympathy has been nothing short of amazing and a fundraising campaign has been launched to help Chatley with his recovery. East Perth Football Club’s coterie group Lotons Club is now looking

to add to the amount already raised for Chatley by issuing a one-off badge to anyone who makes a donation of $10 or more during next week’s game against Peel. The Lotons Club has been making player badges since the start of 2015 and keen Royals collectors would do well to have them all to this point. Those that do will certainly want the Chatley badge. And even if you aren’t a collector, it would be great if you could help out by giving some money for the cause. Donations can be made at the club’s office,

or at the Lotons Club bar at Leederville and club members will also be walking around the ground collecting donations before the game.

WEST PERTH v PERTHIt was a loss West Perth didn’t want. And losing to East Perth is never good at any time. However, the Falcons retain hope of the double chance in the finals. So Joe Morrow, Kris Shannon and Drew Rohde will be keen to make sure the opportunity doesn’t slip by against Perth. Easier said than done. The Demons have been the form team of the second half of the season, climbing from the bottom to seventh spot with a 6-9 record. They did crash back to reality last week with the loss to Peel but again Michael Sinclair, Zac Fisher and Ash Boyes showed they will be a problem for any rival in the run to the September action.

SOUTH FREMANTLE v EAST FREMANTLEIf you are a betting person you might be persuaded into tipping East Fremantle for this match. The form indicates the visiting team has the edge in derbies. The past 12 South Fremantle-East Fremantle battles have gone that way, adding some spice to the already bitter battles. The Bulldogs got a reality check in the loss to likely minor premier Subiaco but Brock Higgins, Shane Hockey and Steven Verrier proved Todd Curley’s men remain a potent WAFL force. East Fremantle needs the win to get back into the top five. George Hampson is the key to the Sharks’ bid.

SUBIACO v SWAN DISTRICTSMiracles do happen in sport. There will be a few during the coming Olympics. Maybe just not at Medibank Stadium this round. Ten wins and eight places on the premiership ladder separate Subiaco and Swan Districts going into this clash. Yet for the black and whites it is another important opportunity to gauge what they have to do to climb up the table. There will be personal wins for the Swans player who can limit the effectiveness of Clancy Wheeler, Liam Ryan and Chris Phelan.

There has been a lot of talk about the impact of AFL players on Peel this season. That is understandable considering the alignment with Fremantle. And there is no denying Matt de Boer, Clancee Pearce, Alex Silvagni and Ethan Hughes have had an impact on the Thunder results. But it has been the emergence of homegrown talent that has, ironically, helped spark the club’s recent revival. And Peel coach Cam Shepherd will be confident that recent injuries to the Dockers have created opportunities for Andrew Haydon, Brad McGowan, Alex Bray and Blair Bell to showcase their wares at league level. Better playing depth will be crucial in the WAFL finals as Fremantle is likely to need some players to undertake early injury remedies to be ready for the 2017 pre-season. Anthony Morabito might be on the Dockers list but he is a Peel local, too. He will be keen to finish off the season in solid form to push for another AFL spot next year. In a quirk in the WAFL fixtures, Peel and Claremont also meet in three rounds. So it has been a while since they clashed in round six when Bell and Josh Bootsma were dominant. It was one of the matches Claremont could have won this season. The Tigers were only two points down at three-quarter time in a “home” game at Medibank Stadium. There was another one of the honourable defeats last week in the eight-point loss to East Perth. Jye Bolton confirmed his status as the favourite for the club’s fairest and best award, and a smoky for the Sandover Medal, in the battle against the Royals. Again, it was goal production that troubled Claremont. No goals in the first quarter and just seven in a game as per last week won’t win too many matches. Beau Maister is ready and waiting for the opportunities if the Tigers can get the ball forward.
