ITALIAN WEEKENDTHREE-DAY FESTIVAL | SEPTEMBER 11TH, 12TH, & 13TH | 2629 AGRICOLA STREET

This September, your club will hosthundreds of members of the community for our three-day annual Italian Weekend Festival.

For more than 30 years our presence in the community has been anchored by Italian Weekend.

Celebrating our culture and heritage, this three-day event focuses on everything the club offers all year round. From Sunday Dinners to cooking and language lessons, to private functions, and a place to hang your hat and be with family.

That’s the beautiful thing about the ‘club’, a friendly nickname that so

many of us call our second home. It’s all about family and friends, a community of people that even though we’re not related, we all act like family.

Club members, like you, are the cornerstone of the ICCA and have helped make it what it is today - a special place for Italian-Canadians to congregate.

That’s why this event is so important to our members, it gives us a platform to showcase our community and expand our welcome mat.

This year, when you’re volunteering for our ‘big event’, remember that you’re part of a bigger picture. A picture thatwas painted by past generations that

continues to be appreciated by the youth of today.

Our volunteers are the heart of our club. They make sure everything is operating at its best. After all, that’s the goal isn’t it? To be our absolute best within our community and share it with others who may not know who we are just yet. This year, let’s make it our best event and be proud to be Italian-Canadian. I know I am.

To sign up to volunteer, visit page 2.

VOLUNTEER WITH THE ICCA FOR OUR ANNUAL

ITALIAN WEEKEND FESTIVAL

Spearheaded by volunteers, Italian Weekend involves almost every member of our association, in addition to the support of family and friends. We have a multitude of departments with volunteering positions available. See below for our full list of all volunteering positions. As a volunteer you will also receive one complimentary meal and non-alcoholic beverage per-shift.

BAR SERVICEDuring the festival we have three bars operating at all times. One inside the main hall, one outside under the canopy, and one downstairs that also operates as a cappuccino/espresso bar. Volunteers for all three days are needed. Any time is appreciated.

FOOD SERVICEThe heart of the weekend is, of course, the authentic Italian cuisine. If you would like to assist with food service, including desserts, we would love to have you!

CASH & TICKET SALESIf you love interacting with people and recommending your favourite Italian dishes, this is the gig for you! Cash shifts for all three days, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are looking to be filled. If you find it difficult to stand for long periods, this is the perfect volunteer role.

KIDS FACE PAINTING Family is a huge part of Italian Weekend, which is why we encourage young families to bring their little ones with them. If you love interacting with kids and enjoy face painting, playing games, activities, etc, let us know!

SET UP & TEAR DOWNMany hands make light work. If logistics is your bread and butter, then this is the role you’ll want to volunteer for. These shifts take place before and after the weekend, so if that suits your schedule sign up today!

CLEAN UP CREWEvery year during Italian Weekend hundreds of people walk through our doors. The cleanup crew is integral in making room for new patrons. If you love to work indoors / outdoors, this is the gig for you.

Serves 61 pound large shrimp1 tablespoon olive oil1/2 teaspoon paprikaSalt and freshly ground black pepper8 cups chicken broth2 tablespoons unsalted butter1 small white onion, diced4 cloves garlic, minced2 cups arborio rice1/2 cup white wine

Heat the oven to 400°F. Rinse the shrimp and pat them very dry. Toss them with olive oil and then the paprika and a generous quantity of salt and pepper. Spread them in a baking dish and return them to the refrigerator.

Warm the broth in a saucepan set over low heat.

In a separate Dutch oven or wide, deep sauté pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, and cook until they are soft and beginning to brown around the edges, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the rice and stir thoroughly to make sure it is coated with the butter and onions. Cook the rice for an additional 1 to 2 minutes.

Deglaze the pan with the white wine, stirring and scraping the pan until the wine has evaporated.

Begin incrementally adding the warm broth one ladle at a time, stirring frequently. Wait to add another ladle until the liquid has been almost completely absorbed by the rice.

In the last 5 minutes of cooking the risotto, put the pan of prepared shrimp in the oven. Bake for 5 minutes or until the shrimp are pink.

When the risotto is ready, turn off the heat and stir in the Parmesan and about 1/2 cup chopped parsley.Serve immediatley and enjoy!

ANNUAL ITALIAN PICNICIn early July members of the communityventured to Oakfield Provincial Park for our annual Italian Picnic! The Italian Picnic is unlike any other. It’s a paradise location filled with familiar faces. Many people bring their own food for the day, but you don’t have to wander far before a friend or relative is offering up more treats to eat! What a great event!

FESTA DELLA REPUBBLICAOn June 2nd, David Mio President of the ICCA, and Honorary Consul of Italy Marilisa Benigno, invited members of the community to a special reception celebrating 69 years of the Italian Republic. Many of our members said that this year’s event was one of the best! We are so pleased to share in and celebrate our Italian history!
