The EastcoNet 2 3rd September 2016

Chair Chat The new season has arrived & welcome to all of you who will be at our two day Club Weekend fest of hockey. Training has started for many in the top teams, Summer Leagues only seemed to finish a few weeks ago but I am raring to go – probably more with a whistle than a stick this season. Much has happened over the Summer – a clubhouse flood, a new Astro surface laid, GB women win gold, a new Men's 1

st team coach so that’s certainly kept

me & the hard working management committee busy plus our preparations to celebrate our Diamond Jubilee this season!

The new pitch will be opened in the half an hour slot at 11.30 on Saturday by the Deputy Mayor and we will have our local councillor Becky Haggar, Steve Turner from England Hockey, all attending.

The Clubhouse repairs are almost finished – the main outstanding matter is the hall floor that’s being re-laid in the coming weeks. I hope you find the improvements make the bar area look fresher, cleaner & brighter. There is still a bit more to do in the coming weeks to finish off.

I am always so impressed by how our members step up to the plate when needed. Sunday afternoon when I popped in to look at the progress I saw Geoff, Bonsey, Gareth and Jimmy T all hard at it cleaning up the bar furniture. Thanks boys – hope you enjoyed the footie as well!

The club AGM is on Saturday 1st October. Match fees will

stay the same this year but we are raising subs by £10 for adults although some other categories are up £20. We have also introduced two new discount Subs for 1

st

year Graduates and Mothers who have a child under 2. I hope you will continue to see membership as good value for money.

Saturday saw me umpiring the last cricket game of the season and it's been a good one weatherwise with no cancellations at all since mid April on a Saturday. This weekend sees the only weekend where hockey & cricket clash & with South Day for umpires on Sunday in Reading & Jane's birthday weekend. Whilst I can't be everywhere you will be pleased to hear I have negotiated moving Jane’s birthday bash until next Sunday. Rob

As manager of the England over 65’s who have just won European Gold at Southgate let me share with you one of our secrets, that could benefit all of us who play or have played sport. It would in fact benefit anyone with issues around back pain, arthritis, and/or lack of energy.

We have been supported by “Xenca“ for the past 4 years who have recommended two products to us and which the majority of the squads are using. I swear by them. The first is Collagen and the second Five a day + V. Both are natural products. If you have a club member in the squad talk to them about it. From the Colts Chairman I am sure many of the children have been inspired by the recent success of the Olympics and in particular the hockey, we welcome beginners to the club and this includes the parents where we will run a beginners class on Monday evenings (check website for details) we are also happy to welcome new colts and encourage our members to bring along a friend or two to see if they like it. As the season approaches please make sure your children have the right equipment- particularly a gum shield (especially those who have lost milk teeth will need to get a new gum shield), shin pads are also essential. If you would like to invest in new hockey kit (see below for where to get it) and not sure what to buy for your children, please feel free to ask either myself or the coaches, I look forward to seeing you soon.
