5,245 meters of history! This is the Mugello Raceway, ladies and gentlemen, one of the temples of world motorsports. The Italy GP of the MotoGP has been racing here for years. Many F1 teams chose this circuit as a testing ground. The raceway has also been the stage to the Formula 3000, Formula Two, the FIA-GT. It is also the only Italian venue to have run the ITC.Today, it is the new FIA-certifi ed Formula 4 that stars on this legendary track, proving that it has already earned its mention in Italian automotive history. Here in Mugello, the F4 joins that noble 4-wheel tradition that has been moving the hearts of men for over a century.

Qui si corre, da anni, il GP d’Italia della MotoGP; qui eseguono i loro test tante scuderie di F1; qui corre la Formula 3000, la Formula Due, il FIA-GT e l’ITC, unico impianto italiano ad averlo fatto.E qui, oggi, corre la Formula 4, a dimostrazione di come la nuova serie fortemente voluta dalla FIA si inserisca a pieno titolo, già alla sua prima stagione, nel solco del grande automobilismo italiano. The fi rst of the three races on schedule for the second round of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth is a one way road with Lance Stroll’s name on it. The Canadian ends the race the way he starts it, in fi rst position, without feeling any pressure from his teammate Brandon Maisano. The only “perk” the French driver manages to snatch from Stroll is the best lap of the race (1’47.022). After the overtakes and contacts of lap one, Andrea Russo settles in third place and maintains the position until the fi nish-line. Championship-wise, this means second place (because Maisano runs for the “18 and over” F4 Trophy). However, after the race, Russo gets a 2 second penalty for having improved his time in the third sector of lap 13 under yellow fl ags and is bumped down to third. Leonardo Pulcini, who was behind him at the fi nish-line, thus gains a position and gets to stand on the second step of the podium.

La prima delle tre gare in programma nel secondo round dell’Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth è assolutamente nel segno di Lance Stroll. Il canadese termina la gara così come la inizia, in prima posizione, senza subire la pressione del compagno di squadra, Brandon Maisano. L’unico lusso che si riesce a concedere il francese è strappargli il giro veloce (1’47.022). Andrea Russo, dopo un primo giro tribolato tra sorpassi e contatti, sfi la terzo (secondo ai fi ni della classifi ca, visto la partecipazione di Maisano all’F4 Trophy per ragioni di età) e così conclude. Viene però penalizzato per aver migliorato il proprio crono, nel terzo settore del 13esimo giro, quando erano esposte le bandiere gialle: due secondi di penalità che lo retrocedono in terza posizione. Leonardo Pulcini, che seguiva Russo al traguardo, avanza così di una posizione e sale sul secondo gradino del podio.

“Finally!”, exclaims Mattia Drudi. After a troubled season opening, this victory comes as a “liberation”. The F&M driver manages to take off right behind Russo at the start. He studies the leader’s moves carefully for several laps and goes even fatser than him. On lap 5 he goes for the pass, overtakes, and takes off on a spree that ends with his fi rst series win. Things go the opposite way for Russo. The Prema Power Team duo of Maisano and Stroll catch up to him, on their head-spinning climb from their start positions (inverted for the top 10 for Race 2). Maisano gets on Russo’s back at the start of the last lap, attempts to get past him, loses control, hits the Italian’s rear left tire and breaks his own front wing. In the havoc, Stroll takes off and claims second place. Russo continues with a blown tire and ends tenth. Maisano fl ies without a wing into third place. Alain Valente follows right behind him and takes the last spot of the podium, since Maisano’s rank only counts for the “18 and over” F4 Trophy.

Mattia Drudi a fi ne gara esclama: “fi nalmente”. È, infatti, una vittoria liberatoria dopo un inizio di stagione sfortunato. Allo start in fuga vanno Russo e, appunto, Drudi. Il pilota del team F & M studia l’avversario che va più piano. Al quinto giro rompe gli indugi, passa e va a completare una cavalcata che fa rima con prima vittoria stagionale. Per Russo differente destino: viene recuperato dai due inseguitori del Prema Power Team, Maisano e Stroll, in rimonta vertiginosa dalla griglia di partenza (invertita per i primi 10). Maisano aggancia Russo proprio all’inizio del giro fi nale, tenta la staccata ma si scompone, urta la posteriore sinistra dell’italiano forandogliela e rompendosi l’ala anteriore. Il risultato è che Stroll passa, sua la seconda piazza. Russo con la ruota forata prosegue, ma termina decimo. Maisano, senza ala, è terzo. Alle spalle arriva Alain Valente, che guadagna quindi anche il podio, considerato che Maisano concorre per la classifi ca “over”.

In race 3 Lance Stroll consolidates his role as dominator. The Canadian takes off at the start and leaves everyone behind, including his teammate Maisano. The French driver starts from a backed up position on grid, because of the penalty received in Race 2 for the clash with Russo. Soon after the start, Maisano fi nds an opening to get past Matteo Cairoli, who is running second, and Russo also slides in with him. At this point, the action follows a similar storyline as race 2. The two converge on the main straight and clash. This time it is Russo who is left with a broken wing. He keeps racing, but eventually the bent wing perforates his front right tire and he has to withdraw. Instead, Maisano keeps going and even manages to work his way up to Stroll. The two teammates close 1-2, almost side to side. Cairoli fi nds the right pace to close third and Ivan Matveev comes in fourth, fi nally achieving a result worthy of his qualifying performances.

In gara 3 Lance Stroll sempre più il dominatore. Il canadese allunga su tutti gli avversari, a partire dal compagno di squadra Maisano, che parte arretrato a causa della penalizzazione ricevuta in seguito all’incidente in gara 2 con Russo. All’inizio della gara Maisano supera Matteo Cairoli, che correva secondo, ma si infi la anche Russo. A questo punto il copione di gara 2 si ripete quasi identicamente. I due si avvicinano troppo sul rettilineo. Questa volta è Russo a rompere l’ala anteriore. L’italiano prosegue, ma l’alettone incastrato sotto al muso fi nisce per perforare la ruota anteriore destra, costringendolo al ritiro. Maisano, invece, continua e riesce addirittura a raggiungere Stroll. I due concludono quasi in parata. Cairoli trova il passo giusto per sfi lare al terzo posto e Ivan Matveev chiude quarto, realizzando fi nalmente un risultato all’altezza delle sue prestazioni nel giro singolo.

BACK IN 1872...The Tatuus F4 single-seater runs on Pirelli tires - a legendary brand that is a guarantee of reliability and performance and that has been playing a pivotal role in the motorsport world. The Milan-based company was originally founded by Giovanni Battista Pirelli with the goal of producing “technical components” made of vulcanized natural rubber. Then fate rolled in a different direction.
