SYLLABUS
This course is intended to introduce the student to Lyric Italian Diction. This course will
include an in-depth study of the text by Evelina Colorni, to be supplemented by in-classdiscussion and exercises, weekly homework projects, quizzes, and singing in class. I DO
NOT allow for make-up quizzes (either before or after class time on Monday), the mid-term, or the final exam. If you miss one quiz and the absence is excused according to the
criteria below, I will average your grade based on the number of quizzes you take. Any
unexcused quiz will be averaged as a “0”. PLEASE NOTE, you may only miss one
quiz that is considered excused. The final exam consists of both a written and singing
portion. Quizzes will cease after the mid-term. The singing portion of the final exam will
consist of one required song, “Già il sole dal Gange” by Alessandro Scarlatti, with
realization by Luigi Dallapiccola. It is available in A or F major. The other piece is oneof your choosing. Both songs and both TRANSLATIONS (word for word) MUST be
memorized. Homework is DUE every class meeting, regardless of whether you areexcused or not. The final date that I will accept ANY homework is the LAST day of class. Any homework received after that point will be recycled and will not count
towards your homework grade.
Students are REQUIRED to take the quizzes/exams when they are scheduled.24-hour notification BEFORE or AFTER THE QUIZ/EXAM is REQUIRED in the
event of severe illness or family emergency. Attendance of class is REQUIRED. Two
unexcused absences will result in the reduction of one full letter grade. Three unexcused
absences will result in FAILURE of the class. You are responsible for ALL materialdiscussed in class, regardless of whether you were in attendance or not. Please ask one of
your colleagues to fill you in on what you missed, including all notes and information.
