It was a particularly dark night, there was no moon, and clouds from the day’s rain hung heavily in the sky. Unteroffizier Braun sat in the commander’s cupola of his Leopard 1 tank, with his arms resting on the turret top. He knew they were coming; the platoon briefing earlier that day by the Leutnant had outlined an expected attack from the northeast.
The next few hours had been spent preparing their ambush position. The Leopards were well concealed amongst the various small stands of trees scattered about the fields in which they had taken position. The company was in an area of high ground just a few metres above the surrounding area. This gave them a view to the north and east for several kilometres.

However, night had come and the expected attack had yet to arrive. Braun had switched out the commander zoom periscope with the active infra-red sight and the searchlight had been turned to Infra-red mode. Braun and his crew were ready for action. The quiet of the gloomy night was broken by a call over the tank’s radio from the Leutnant, ‘Enemy panzers! 600m. Northeast.’Braun ducked down and began scanning for enemy though his infra-red sight. It wasn’t long before he saw the hazy line of tanks crossing a field to the front of their position. ‘Panzer on left, 500m. Sabot.’
‘Sabot,’ replied the loader as he shoved the anti-tank round into the breech.‘Free fire!’ ordered Braun, giving his gunner permission to fire at will.A crack and the Leopard rocked as the 105mm gun fired. Braun watched as the night lit up from the glow of a burning T-72.Braun’s loader prepared another round, ‘Sabot!’ The gunner quickly found another target and the Leopard rocked again. All along the Soviet line tanks began to burn as an entire company of Leopard 1 tanks opened up on them.

Even though the powerful Leopard 2 main battle tank is now in service throughout the panzer brigades, the Leopard 1 tank has not been retired. One of the Leopard 1 tank’s roles is now as part of the divisional Panzeraufklärungs battalions in the schwere Panzeraufklärungs Kompanien (heavy armoured reconnaissance companies) and gemischte Panzeraufklärungs Kompanie (mixed armoured reconnaissance company). Though lightly armoured, the Leopard 1 tank is fast and well-armed, with 105mm L7 gun that is more than capable of dealing with any scouting vehicles of Warsaw Pact.

Like other panzer divisions, Panzer Division 1 was made up of three brigades. Two of these brigades (Panzer Brigade 2 and Panzer Brigade 3 ‘Wesser-Leine’) were equipped with Leopard 2 main battle tanks. The third brigade was a panzergrenadier brigade (Panzergrenadier Brigade 1), which was equipped with Leopard 1 tanks. Panzergrenadier Brigade 1 had one panzer battalion (Panzerbataillon 14) with 41 Leopard 1 main battle tanks. Another battalion (Panzergrenadier Bataillon 11) was mixed with two Panzergrenadier companies with Marder infantry fighting vehicles and one panzer company of Leopard 1 tanks. The remainder of the brigade’s battalions consisted of two more panzergrenadier battalions (12th and 13th) mounted in Marder IFVs and M113 APCs.A panzergrenadier brigade is no light-weight and it is capable of independent action. It has its own supporting arms such as a Panzerjäger Kompanie equipped with Jaguar 2 tank-hunters armed with TOW anti-tank missiles.
Platoons are often exchanged between companies and battalions, and on occasion troops from other brigades may be attached as required. A Leopard 1 Panzer Kompanie would give up one of its panzer platoons and receive a panzergrenadier platoon for combined arms operations.Anti-aircraft assets from the division’s anti-aircraft regiment were also allocated to provide excellent cover with their Gepard Flakpanzers and Fliegerfaust 1 (Red-eye) anti-aircraft missiles. While Panzer Brigade 2 would be the first to engage the enemy, Panzergrenadier Brigade 1 would hold the next line of defence, preparing to engage the enemy once their comrades had withdrawn after fighting delaying actions.

Oskar sat in the back of his squad’s M113 Mannschaftstransporter with his G3 battle rifle clasped between his legs as his ride rattled and clanked across the field. The hum of the diesel engine vibrated through the vehicle and up his body. He contemplated the battle ahead and tried to recall all that he’d been taught. The jolt of the M113 coming to halt brought Oskar out of his reverie. ‘Out, out, out!’ shouted Unteroffizier Weber, slapping Oskar on the back as he exited the vehicle behind his comrades. Oskar went left with the MG-3 machine-gun team, carrying additional ammunition. Moving from the field where the Zug’s M113 armoured personnel carriers had stopped, Oskar and his team took up positions amongst the bushy under growth of a small stand of trees. Nearby, an old wooden farm shed harboured a rusty old tractor. In the distance, crossing the fields from the east, they came. Soviets, Oskar assumed, but they may be fellow Germans from the east or even Poles. It didn’t matter, today they were all enemies. Tanks and infantry fighting vehicles rolled towards Oskar’s positions, as he watched. The MG-3 gunner and loader prepared their weapon, and it was ready to fire moments after taking position. The fighting began with a nearby ‘woosh’ as the squad’s Milan team fired an anti-tank missile at an approaching tank. An explosion marked a hit, with the tank rolling to a stop as black smoke billowed out from the turret. The Zug’s other Milans joined in and more tanks halted and exploded across the enemy front. The enemy was just 500 metres away when Unteroffizier Weber ordered Gefreiter Fischer to be ready with the Panzerfaust 44 anti-tank rocket. Soon the Soviet BMPs were firing machine-guns and auto-cannons all around Oskar’s position as they approached to within 300 metres and halted. The BMPs disgorged their contents and Soviet riflemen fanned out on either side of each vehicle. They walked forward firing their assault and automatic rifles from the hip, kicking up dirt and leaves all around Oskar. At that moment the squad’s MG-3 teams began returning fire. As the Soviet riflemen fell, the lead BMP exploded in a shower of sparks. Fischer’s Panzerfaust 44 rocket had hit home.A sudden cry of ‘Ammo’, saw Oskar stirred from observation into action. He dashed over to the MG-3 with a fresh belt, his day of battle had just begun.
In a panzergrenadier battalion some of the infantry are mounted in American built M113 armoured personnel carriers (APCs). A panzergrenadier brigade panzergrenadier battalion con-sisted of three panzergrenadier companies. Two mounted Marders and one mounted in M113. The M113 equipped companies were organised the same as Marder equipped companies except they had a larger allocation of Milan anti-tank missiles. Each Panzergrenadier Zug (Platoon) had three instead of two missile systems due to the increased carry capacity of the M113 over the Marder.
The mobility and versatility of the panzergrenadiers lends them to a variety of combat roles. The mobility and pro-tection offered by their M113 armoured personnel carriers, is well-suited for swift changes between mounted and dis-mounted combat. This enables them keep pace with their tanks while still able to clear villages and dense terrain that can’t be entered or held by the tanks. This versatility and ability to react quickly enables them to gain and maintain the initiative in fluid battle situations. Key to this success is the combination of fire and movement, while attacking in conjunction with the Leopard main battle tanks.

The Panzergrenadier Zug (Armoured Infantry Platoon) is equipped with the M113 A1 G MTW (Mannschafts Transport Wagen, or personnel carrier). The German M113s were upgraded between 1974 and 1981 to have a diesel engines, replacing the original American petrol engines. The Panzergrenadier Zug itself is, like their Marder equipped brothers, a small, but well-trained, motivated, and equipped, unit. Each M113 carried a dismount of seven men, one armed with a MG3 machine-gun, and the rest with G3 assault rifles. In addition one man also has a Panzerfaust 44 anti-tank rocket, and another was armed with a 40mm Granat-pistole (grenade pistol). Unlike the Marder mounted panzergrenadiers, those mounted in M113s had three Milan anti-tank missile systems instead of two in each ZugEach M113 is armed with a MG3 machine-gun to provide the panzergrenadiers with fire support.

The Panzeraufklärungs Bataillon, or armoured reconnaissance battalion, of a panzer division provides early warning of the direction and strength of enemy attacks. Their main task is reconnaissance in the area of operations of the parent division. On the attack, they advance far ahead of the main body locat-ing the enemy positions, defences and intentions, allowing the commander to prepare their attacks as they advance. In defence, they often operate with reconnaissance by force operations, engaging the enemy to provoke a battle with no intention to fully engage. By observing the reactions of the enemy they can draw conclusions about their numerical
strength, equipment, training, competence, and even morale depending on the circumstances. These actions also delay the enemy, leaving them unsure if they have reached the main-line of resistance or not.A Panzeraufklärungs Bataillon is made up of two heavy com-panies equipped with Leopard 1 tanks, a mixed company with Leopard 1 tanks and Luchs 8-wheeled armoured cars, and one company of infantry mounted in Fuchs 6-wheeled armoured transports. Often these different elements are allocated out to companies as required for the task at hand.
The Fuchs sped down the forest track, its six-wheeled suspension rocking and rolling over the rough surface, as Leutnant Schneider peered back down at his small column of vehicles from his commander’s hatch, checking to see if his platoon was keeping up. He turned back to look ahead at the platoon of Leopard 1 tanks that had already pushed beyond the forest toward a small village, their initial objective. The Leopards fanned out as they approached it, confident the battalion’s Luchs armoured cars had already flushed out any lurking Soviets. As Schneider’s platoon neared the village, they dismounted from their Fuchs and advanced into it on foot, checking houses for signs of enemy, while the Leopard 1 tanks waited at a distance to give fire support if required. A short time later Schneider found himself and his platoon at the opposite edge of the village. Now he understood why the company had been sent here. The eastern boundary of the village dropped off in a gentle slope that allowed for a panoramic view of the countryside below for some kilometres, and there, about two kilometres distant, was the autobahn. Along it was running a stream of traffic heading west. Dark trucks and armoured vehicles could be seen silhouetted against the fields. A look through his binoculars confirmed it, Soviets! Soon his troops would begin probing towards the autobahn to see how well this enemy supply line was protected. Then the rest of the brigade could begin its attack.

The infantry element of the armoured recon-naissance battalion is provided by the 5th com-pany. These are organised in a similar fashion to the panzergrenadiers, but only have the one Milan anti-tank missile launcher in each Zug. The rest of the men are armed with the same mix of MG3 machine-guns, G3 assault rifles, and Panzerfaust 44 anti-tank rockets as the panzergrenadiers. They are mounted in three Fuchs 6-wheeled transport-panzer.The Fuchs (Fox) Transport-panzer (abbreviat-ed to TPz) is a 6-wheeled, fully amphibious, armoured personnel carrier designed for a variety roles including troop transport, engi-neer transport, bomb disposal, NBC (Nuclear, Biological and Chemical) reconnaissance and electronic warfare. It can carry up to eight pas-sengers and has an MG3 machine-gun on an anti-aircraft mount. It can also mount a Milan anti-tank missile launcher if mobile firepower is needed. Like the Luchs, it is fast on roads, good cross-country, and is very quiet.

Serzhant Sergei Bolotenko crept up to the trees lining the road where three the German Leopard tanks sat, their tank commanders engaged in discussion. Bolotenko had no idea what they were discussing, but it didn’t matter to him. He had his trusty RPG-7 on hand and he was going to score himself a kill. He’d been told by the Leytenant that the Leopard tank was designed by speed, so wasn’t very heavily armoured. He also had a clear view of the rearmost tanks side armour. This was a certainty.Bolotenko took aim and fired. A “Fuh-ssshhhhh” and the rocket was on its way. There was an explosion and a cloud of dust and debris enveloped the Leopard tank.A smile lit up Bolotenko’s face as he admired his handiwork. As the dust cleared he was greeted with the sight of the tank’s turret turning to face him. His blood ran cold as he realised his anti-tank rocket had had no effect.
BAZOOKA SKIRTSThe Germans are familiar with the effectiveness of infantry hand-held anti-tank weapons like the original Panzerfaust and Bazooka. The Germans have fitted their modern battle tanks with ‘bazooka skirts’, spaced armour to protect them from light, hand-held anti-tank weapons.
Teams with Bazooka Skirts have a Front and Side armour rating of 10 against HEAT weapons.
The West Germans have a number of features. These are reflected in the following special rules.
FORWARD DEFENCEWith the German doctrine of forward defence it is important to have your anti-tank weapons where they can cause the most damage. While most of the panzers are in reserve wait-ing to counterattack, the Jaguar jagdpanzers are in the front line ready to wreak havoc on the advancing enemy tanks.
Jaguar 1 or Jaguar 2 Jagdpanzer Zugs can be placed on table in missions with Deep Reserves in addition to the normal limit of one Unit with Front Armour greater than 4.
