with Causes that Matterf the many permanent funds administered by the Hancock County Community Foundation (HCCF), all have one thing in common: they have been created by caring individuals, families and organizations to make a difference.

In this publication, you will read stories of people, places, and causes that are furthered by those who choose to make a difference with gifts to permanent funds called endowments. It is the duty of the Community Foundation to steward the generosity of citizens who have entrusted us the great privilege of administering these permanently invested funds and the

annual grants and scholarships, generated by their income, for all time.

We cordially invite you to enjoy this Annual Report and hope you will feel compelled to join us in making our community an even greater place to live, work, volunteer, and play. After all, the actions you take and the gifts you make, regardless of size, make an incredible difference!

red Powers is a man of faith and family. His creation of the Powers Gibson Seib Carpenter Joint Family Fund is evidence of that very truth.

This donor-advised fund, founded in 2011, is a tool Fred and his wife Becky are using to put their strong faith and love of family into action for community good. It’s no mistake that the fund, fondly called the PGSCJ, represents not only the first initial of each family unit, but the core of the family’s belief system: Praise God’s Son Christ Jesus. “We feel blessed that we grew up in Hancock County. We feel giving back to the community is our way of saying thank you for allowing us to live here,” says the family.

One of the ways Fred gives back to the com-munity is by serving on the HCCF Board of Directors. As part of his board orientation, Fred learned about Acorn Funds. An acorn fund has ten years to reach a minimum endowment level, rather than the stan-dard five. “I thought to myself, now that’s something we can do!”

Fred and Becky established a donor advised fund, one that invites donors to make recommendations to HCCF for grants. “Our children are giving people and we wanted to see them be part of a fund, at this stage of their lives, when they can involve their young children. We hope to plant seeds that will take root in our grandchildren so that they may pass it on to their kids. We want this to be a multi-generational process.” Fred’s vision is that, as the grandchildren mature, they will take an active role in contributing to the fund and recommending grants.

HCCF’s greeting card program is a tool that’s helping engage the Powers’ children and grandchildren in the philanthropic fund. On birthdays, Fred and Becky make gifts to the PGSCJ to acknowledge how important each of their individual family mem-bers are to them. HCCF creates and mails a personalized card in response. The grandchildren look forward to getting a card in the mail. “I almost always get a phone call saying, ‘Thank you, Papaw, for making a donation to the Community Foundation in my name!’ It’s an awesome feeling to know they are beginning to understand why we created the fund.” On Father’s Day this year, his feeling was confirmed. This time, he got a card in the mail. A gift was made by his grandchildren in his honor. “Everybody wants to be a part of something bigger than themselves,” says Fred, “and this fund gives us all that opportunity.”

Gifts are professionally invested with the following objectives:• Preservation of permanent assets (endowment funds);• Protection of these assets from inflation; and• Enhancement of the fund assets through market appreciation. The Foun-

dation annually distributes a portion of each fund’s generated income as designated by the donor to meet the needs of their favorite charitable causes or organizations both now and forever.

he truck backs up to the rear building entrance, the tailgate opens, and Jill Ebbert, Executive Director of the Kenneth Butler Memorial Soup Kitchen (KBMSK), covers her mouth in astonishment. Before her are cartons brimming with fresh vegetables delivered by smiling

volunteers who have planted, nurtured, and picked them on the Soup Kitchen’s behalf. “Fresh produce is normally beyond the means of our patrons,” shares Jill. “This blessing will enable us to bolster our menus with much needed veg-etables and fruits.”

The special delivery is courtesy of one woman’s dream. Chris Dobbins grew up on a farm, and after 30 years in the health field, retired to return to her love of the land. She decided to apply her expertise of health promotion to support her community through the establishment of a garden that would provide healthy food options for those less fortunate; thus, the Garden of Eat’in was born. Its primary focus of support began as KBMSK, but the fresh produce has been so well received, the harvest of the Garden of Eat’in now supplements the shelves of the Hancock County Food Pantry as well.

In 2012, the one-acre Garden provided 5,578 pounds of fresh vegetables and fruit to KBMSK. Additionally, volunteers logged 1,018 hours to plant, main-tain, and harvest the produce. The Garden of Eat’in received the benefits of a $1,000 HCCF grant through its partnership with the Kenneth Butler Soup Kitchen to provide seeds and equipment for the 2013 planting season.

“The outcome I have seen from our mission to partner with the Garden of Eat’in,” shares Jill, “is stronger and healthier patrons physically, emotionally, and spiritually.”

The Community Foundation coordinates the administration of over 80 endowed scholarship funds to high school and adult students throughout our community. We do so on behalf of generous people who have afforded us the privilege of helping them create permanent funds that generate scholarships year after year. In addition, HCCF administers the prestigious Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship valued at over $200,000 per year, as well as the George & Icy Vaughn Performing Arts Scholarship Competition each spring. In 2012, 128 graduating students and adult learners were awarded scholarships. A complete list of scholarship recipients can be found at giveHCgrowHC.org.

When Morgan McKinney’s brothers were born, they were premature. When it was determined that they had disabilities, her family began a journey of learning about resources that could help them. While at a meeting of F.U.S.E., an organization that provides information and support to families like Morgan’s, she heard a speaker from a local therapeutic riding center and learned that it was a place that would allow her to combine her love of helping others and her love of horses. Since that time, every riding season for the last eight years, Morgan has volunteered at Edelweiss Equine-Assisted Therapy.

Morgan, age 16, was recognized for her efforts with the prestigious Martha Beckenholdt Award that, annually, honors one high school junior who has exhibited outstanding contributions of time, talent, and energy to philanthropic endeavors. These same characteristics are the shining attributes of the woman for whom the award is named, Miss Martha Beckenholdt, now 97. Morgan was honored at HCCF’s Gala and given the opportunity to name the recipient of a $500 grant. It was no surprise that her choice was Edelweiss.

“It has amazed me over the years, how something like riding horses once a week can change the mood and help improve the self-esteem of riders,” says Morgan. “When the rider has a smile on his or her face, I know that I am helping them improve their lives both physically and emotionally.”

Giving Back is Ageless

he Women’s Fund of Hancock County, a component fund of HCCF, exists to support programs and organiza-

tions that strengthen and empow-er women. Doing so positions those women to become strong, so that they in turn can enrich the lives of their families and friends — and improve the communities in which they live.

The Women’s Fund is supported through annual membership con-tributions that are divided equally between immediate impact and a long-term investment in the community. In 2012, over $26,000 was donated by caring woman and girls. The endowment, estab-lished in 2007, has grown to over $60,000 and was recently named to honor a very special woman.

Irene Walrod Curry, born in rural southeastern Kansas, moved to Greenfield when her husband Bert took a position with Eli Lilly. Irene has been not only a mother to her four children, but played a role in the healthy development of many others. While her own children were all under the age of 15, she served as an infant foster parent, caring for ba-bies who would have otherwise been victims of a broken system. Irene has volunteered countless hours for Mental Health, Girl Scouts, Band, an Exchange Student and Teacher program, Church, and the Community Foundation. She has driven cancer patients to their appointments and delivered meals to those homebound. Irene has been a member of Tri-Kappa and now serves on the Advisory Board of the Women’s Fund. It was in Irene’s kitchen, where she volunteered to host a round-table with a group of inspiring ladies, that the idea of the Women’s Fund was born in 2007.

The Women’s Fund could think of no greater way to honor a woman who captures the essence of our mission, than to rename the Hancock County Community Foundation Women’s Fund Endowment, to the Irene Walrod Curry Endowment for the Women’s Fund of Hancock County. In addition, Irene was presented with a plaque.

“In my heart, the name of each donor and volunteer should be engraved on the award. Obviously there isn’t room for all who have given or worked to achieve the success the Women’s Fund Giving Circle has experienced in these few years. So, just let me say that I accept this with gratitude in the name of all of you (the HCCF Staff, donors and volunteers) who have made many contributions of time and funds.” — Irene Curry

For the next two years, the grant making of the Women’s Fund will focus on Economic Empow erment for women and their fami lies. Funding will be dedicated to the creation and incubation of a new nonprofit organization called the Women’s Resource Center. When open, the Women’s Resource Cen ter will provide programs that help women navigate life’s hurdles, ac cess community services, develop new skill sets, and move lives for ward, one step at a time, enabled through a close mentoring rela tionship with built-in accountability checkpoints.

Nancy King, known for her love of Hancock County, designated four organizations that will benefit perpetually from her generosity. As a result, Leadership Hancock County will be able to provide a scholarship every year for a class participant, an adult learner will have funding for post-secondary school, and Greenfield Christian Church will thrive.

Dorothy Helfenberger’s legacy gift will better position American Bible Society, the Salvation Army, Wheeler Mission, St. Labre Indian School, and New Hope Christian Church to carry out their missions.

“I cannot find the proper words to express my appreciation and gratitude at this incredible gesture of generosity to our Native American children. I hope an honest and simple ‘thank you’ will suffice.” – Marge Rath, St. Labre Indian School

Both women designated a portion of their gift to the Community Foundation’s unrestricted grantmaking pool, allowing HCCF the flexibility to meet a broad range of needs in Hancock County, even as those needs change over time.
