SEM Boys Basketball District D-2 5 Tournament Runner-Up

The SEM Mustangs season came to a heart breaking end at North Platte High School, losing in the championship game to the eventual Class D-2 State Champions Mullen 40-48. The Mustangs completed an outstanding year suffering only 2 loses on the season, both in championship action. The other SEM lose was to Class C-2 State Qualifiers, the Amherst Bronco’s in a triple over-time thriller at the Viaero Center for the FKC conference championship. The Mustangs finish the season ranked #6 in the state, as determined by Stu Pospisil sports writer for the Omaha World Herald. Congratulations on a great season!

SEM Celebrates Dr. Seuss’s Birthday

March 2nd has always been a big day for schools as they celebrate the works of Dr. Seuss. This year’s celebration was made extra special as Mr. Doud created the Seuss Frame and photographed every student for the occasion. The students where then able to take the photos home as a memory of the day!

On March 22nd twelve students from SEM traveled to Elwood for the FKC Music Contest. The day was a huge success for the SEM music department with all 13 entries receiving Superior ratings! Four of those superior ratings also received a perfect score. When judges score entries they use a rubric that includes 7 categories. You can receive a rating of 1-5 in each category. Then the numbers are added up and the overall rating is given. A 7 is a perfect score. 7-10 is a Superior rating (I) 11-17 is an Excellent (II) rating, 18-24 is a Good (III), 25-31 is a Poor (IV), 32+ is Very Poor (V). I'm very proud of the hard work our students have put into their performances and it showed in their judges scores. Carol Karlberg is also a big part of our success as our accompanist. She cares about our students and shares my dedication to giving our students everything they need to succeed. We are blessed to have her on our team!

Here were our entries and results. (* marks perfect scores)

SEM Third Grade, Mrs. Bauer The third grade are doing an embryology project. Keri Elsen brought two dozen eggs for us to incubate on March 20th . In three weeks we should be having baby chicks in the third grade room. We are learning all about how chickens are raised on farms and the life cycle of chickens. We are excited for April 10th when our chicks will hatch. The third grade hopes that we have lots of baby chicks hatch!

Science Olympiad 2017 —- by Thomas Schwarz

Once again S-E-M’s bright and dedicated students went off to UNK where the 28th Annual Science Olympiad was held. The events that were participated in this year ranged from Electric Vehicle to Write It-Do it. Overall, the participation from all involved was incredible. In fact, there was enough participation this year to justify two C teams. Eight of the 36 who went to the event placed in the top six. Those who brought home medals were: Jasmine Gilmore – Astronomy (4th), Thomas Schwarz – Anatomy and Physiology (2nd), Nathan Schroder – Electric Vehicle (5th), Micah Eggleston – Electric Vehicle(5th), Tennyson Williams – Helicopters (5th), Jacob Sleicher – Helicopters (5th), Ragan Govier – Anatomy and Physiology (1st), and Logan Gilmore – anatomy and Physiology (5th). We hope that next year will also prove to be eventful and productive for the S-E-M Mustangs.

Counseling Updates

Several of the elementary teachers celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2 with special readers (parents, students, administration) and activities. All PK-6 student pictures were taken along with several 7-12 students and staff in a special Dr. Seuss picture frame. These pictures were displayed on the front wall for all to enjoy and later that week given to each student.

The second monthly elementary honoring ceremony was held March 3 to honor PK-6 students for their reading accomplishments in January. We had amazing growth from the first honoring ceremony. Notable honors were 28 site words for PK student, 25, 35 and 65 words a minute improvement for reading tests. We will be celebrating February/March honors and 3rd quarter perfect attendance on April 7. A special surprise for students with outstanding February and March results will be awarded.

April is Autism Awareness Month and we are planning a couple activities for our students. April 3 is National “Blue Out” day. We are asking all students to wear blue on Monday, April 3rd. On Tuesday during lunch recess students will walk the football field to show their support of Autism. Fast facts about autism will also be shared with students in the morning announcements. Students will also receive an autism awareness bracelet.

April is always a busy month for our students. Grandparents Day/Field day is scheduled for April 26th. Several classes will also be doing field trips around the area and state testing will also take place in April.

7th and 8th Graders competed in a “Why I Want To Go to College” essay sponsored by Omaha Storm Chasers and Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg. First place winners in each congressional district can receive a $2000 NEST college savings account. 2nd place is $1000 NEST college savings account and third place is $500 NEST college saving account.

Seniors are busy completing scholarship applications and finalizing plans for next fall. Many of the local scholarships are due April 15, please make sure they get turned in before Easter break. March was busy for juniors as many of them have been attending college fairs and signing up for college visits. Juniors attended the Dawson County Exploration Day on March 15 in Lexington. The EducationQuest College Fair in Grand Island was Sunday, March 26. Students were able to meet and make connections with several recruiters.

The Nebraska State Legislature passed a bill mandating all juniors take the ACT this spring in place of the NeSA. The students are not required to pay for the test and will be able to send their scores to four colleges of their choosing. In an effort to prepare our juniors for the ACT assessment, we are using a proven, entertaining ACT Preparation with the John Baylor Prep (JBP). Students will experience twelve, 42-minute sessions of the online course during school over the next month leading up to the test on April 19th. The average score increase from JPP is about two points, an amount that can save families thousands in college costs and improve your child’s college choices. I am hoping that many of our students will join the “five point jump club” from their previously taken ACT.Dear Parents,

Kindergarten Roundup will be held on Thursday, April 20th from 2:30pm-3:30pm. This is a very important milestone for all parents and future kindergartners!  This day is designed to provide families with a fun opportunity to hear more about the school, take a tour, and fill out registration materials.  Parents are urged to attend the Roundup with their enrolling child.

Please meet your child in the Kindergarten room at 2:30.  Mrs. Gehrt, our school nurse, will then take you to the Library to discuss what your child will need for a Kindergarten physical. Please bring a certified birth certificate with you if the school does not already have one on hand.  Joy will also go over office paperwork with you.

We look forward to seeing each of you on April 20th!

Sincerely,

Roger F. Doud

In the March 2017 issue, this picture of the students who participated in the Sining Youth of Nebraska Festival in Grand Island on February 11, 2017 was posted, and there was an error of omission. Reagan Govier was not included. We would like to take this time to additionally congratulate her for her musical talents as well as the others!

Our team members did a great job of representing SEM and it was a very educational day for all of the contestants.

Our final Sr. High Academic Quiz Bowl of the season will be the FKC Quiz Bowl which will be held on April

10 at Axtell beginning at 1:00 PM. We are working hard to prepare for the conference tournament and are looking forward to a very competitive meet.

Mrs. Deb Jones, SEM SHAQB Coach

Severe Weather Season

With the coming of the spring season, so does the possibilities of severe weather. Just like everyone else we plan for the

worst and hope for the best! SEM school participated in the Nebraska Severe Weather Awareness and on March 29th, we

joined other Nebraska Schools as we held a practice drill in conjunction with the City of Sumner emergency alert and students

and staff proceeded to safety shelters. The new building has made the process much easier and safer for all those in the building.

ELEMENTARY HIGH ABILITY LEARNER CAMP OUT

Our annual Elementary High Ability Learner “Camp Out” was held on Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25 at SEM School. Our High Ability Learner “Campers” included: Ryan Arbuthnot, Navarre Plagmann, Colt Schroeder, Dani Claflin, Creyton Line, Mikayla Schroeder, Josie Smith, and Jacie Wolfinger. We started our “Camp Out” at 4:00 PM on Friday and “camped out” until Saturday morning at 7:45 AM. We set up our “camp” on the wrestling deck after school on Friday. We played games and made doughnuts for our breakfast the next morning. The “Campers” then prepared pizza,

breadsticks, and sauce for supper. They also made ice cream sundaes for dessert.

We then played several games including basketball, flashlight tag, and “Apples to Apples.” Our “campers” then completed a Community Service Project for Easter for our students, faculty and staff members.

We did karaoke and played more games, including “Bean Boozled.” We then enjoyed popcorn, candy, and pop while watching a movie together before bed time.

After sleeping a few hours, we woke up, frosted and decorated our doughnuts, and enjoyed eating

breakfast together. Our overnight “Camp Out” concluded at 7:45 AM. Each of our HAL “campers” received a HAL jacket at the “Camp Out.”

We would like to thank Diana and Joe Belmudez for joining our “campers” for supper along with Megan Day and Mekenzie Beattie, two of our National Honor Society members. Thanks also to Janice Wolfinger and Lana Schroeder for stopping by to check in with our “campers.” We would like to thank all of our Elementary HAL parents for all that they did to make our “Camp Out” a great success! Our “campers” came to the “Camp Out” very well prepared and they were very excited to be there! We all had a great time with lots of good memories!

Mrs. Deb Jones, Elementary HAL Coordinator
