Die skool het besluit om op die vol-gende 3 maniere met ouers to kom-munikeer: SMS, D6Communicator and email. This enables Pearson to save on paper and ink (and to go green), and also provide instant communication of important infor-mation to parents and learners. In order for us to make these technol-ogies as efficient as possible, it is vital that Pearson is informed of any changes in email addresses and cell-phone numbers. This can be done by emailing the school at [email protected] or the Head of the IT Department (Mr James) at [email protected]

With the increased use of smart phones, it has come to our atten-tion that more parents and learners are making use of the D6 Commu-nicator Mobile site: http://mobi.d6communicator.com/ With D6Com you are able to read the latest News, glance at the Cal-endar and read up on important Resources. NEWS = latest news on a daily / weekly basis CALEN-DAR = monthly activities and events scheduled at Pearson High School RE-SOURCES = Grade 12 Exam Timetables, Up-coming Events, and the like.

Application for Special Needs Any parents of new learners with special needs, such as extra time for writing exams,

concessions in terms of immigrant status, etc., must please forward, to Miss M.

Oosthuizen, a doctor's letter which confirms the child's need to have a special

concession. She will then complete the necessary forms to be sent to the

Department of Education.

Procedure for changing subjects in Grades 10 & 11: The National Department of Education has

formulated the procedure to be followed for the

change of subjects relating to the National Senior Certificate in

Grades 10—11.

- ’n Leerder mag een of twee vakke in sy/haar Gr. 10- en 11-jaar

verander.

- Leerders mag ’n vak in Graad 10 en 11 verander, indien die

skool dink dis in die beste belang van die kind.

- The school may take such a decision only after consultation

with the Head of Department or his/her delegate.

- The approval for a subject change must be obtained from the

Director: Assessment and Examinations, provided the following

is furnished:

* a letter from the principal either supporting or providing reasons

for not supporting the change;

* a letter from the subject teacher outlining the programme to be

followed to assist the learner to cover the aspects of the

curriculum statement for the previous grades that were missed.

The closing dates for the change of subjects are: Gr 11 by the

end of February; Grade 10 by mid-July, in the year in which the

examination will be written.

GRADE 8

ADVENTURE DAY

All the Grade 8s attended an adven-ture day on Saturday, 24 January 2015. The aim of the day was for the grade 8s to get to know each other and to bond as a group. The day, organised by Get Real Adventures, used the format of an Amazing Race competition through Summerstrand. Activities ranged from trolley races, tube-riding, running a car wash, eat-ing curry and playing putt-putt.

A highlight of the day was the heli-copter ride for the learner in each group that, according to the group, made the best contribution to the team.

The day was enjoyed by all and our grade 8s are now truly Pearsonites!

We have a system for when learners have to be collected early from school for Doctors’

Appointments etc. Parents must inform the school of the date and time that any learn-

er needs to be collected early.

The learner must complete a BLUE FORM granting him/her permission to leave early,

signed by the learner’s Grade Head. These forms are available at the front office. The

school will then arrange for the learner to be waiting in the foyer just before he/she

needs to be fetched. Ouers moet daarop let dat hulle ’n leerder by ontvangs moet uit-

teken voor hulle die skool verlaat.

Please take note / Let op asseblief

NATIONAL SCHOOLS QUIZ COMPETITION During the December holidays, three 2014 matrics: Tinus Oosthuizen, Andre de Jager and Pumela Sizani travelled to Monash University in Johannesburg to at-tend the finals of the National Schools Quiz Competition. The tournament was at-tended by the top 32 schools countrywide who had qualified in the provincial rounds during the year.

During the three days, various team activities and career workshops took place as

well as recording the knock-out tournament segments for TV. Each recording

showcased four schools on stage eliminating each other in a set of rounds that led

to the top four schools in the country fighting for the winner’s trophy and valuable

prizes for themselves and their school.

Pearson attained a creditable fourth place nationally, being knocked out in the semis by the

winners of the competition, another Port Elizabeth school, Victoria Park. If you would like to

watch the schools in action, tune in to Channel 319 on DSTV on Saturdays.

INTERACT

VALENTINE'S DANCE

Please encourage all Pearsonites to support the Interact Club.

The Valentine's Dance tickets are on sale for R40. Learners

can also buy hearts, roses and teddy bears for their Valentines

between the two quads daily until 13 February.

Any money raised by Interact projects go to worthy causes in

different communities. It is always better to give than to

receive.

HUMIDITY

FACTOR

Dit is skoolbeleid om die humiditeitsfaktor rakende

sportoefeninge te monitor. We do not like cancel-

ling sports practices but we wish to assure parents

that the school will act responsibly and that coach-

es would concentrate more on the honing of skills

than on fitness exercises on hot/humid days.
