Healing with MassageMassage as a healing tool has been around for thousands of years in many cultures. Touching is a natural human reaction to pain and stress, and for conveying compassion and support. The same was true of our earliest ancestors. Healers throughout time and throughout the world have instinctually and inde-pendently developed a wide range of therapeutic tech-niques using touch. Many are still in use today, and with good reason. We now have scientific proof of the benefits of massage - ben-efits ranging from treating chronic diseases and injuries to alleviating the growing tensions of our modern lifestyles. Having a massage does more than just relax your body and mind - there are specific physiological and psychological changes

which occur, even more so when massage is utilized as a preventative, frequent therapy and not simply mere luxury. Massage not only feels good, but it can cure what ails you. The Results of Stress in your BodyExperts estimate that 80 percent to 90 percent of disease is stress-related. Massage and bodywork is there to combat that frightening number by helping us remember what it means to relax and breath with awareness. The physical changes massage brings to your body can have a posi-tive effect in many areas of your life. Besides increasing relaxation and decreasing anxiety, massage lowers your blood pressure, in-creases circulation, improves recovery from injury, helps you to sleep better and can increase your concentration.

It reduces fatigue and gives you more energy to handle stressful situations. Massage is a perfect elixir for good health, but it can also provide an integra-tion of body and mind. By producing a meditative state or heightened awareness of living in the present mo-ment, massage can provide emotional and spiritual bal-ance, bringing with it true relaxation and peace. It’s undoubtedly a wonderful thing when your therapist begins unwinding those stress-tightened muscles, and your day’s troubles be-gin to fade away. But it’s the cherry on top to know this “medicine” only gets better with frequency. The Benefits of MassageIn an age of technical and, at times, impersonal medicine, massage offers a drug-free, non-invasive and humanis-tic approach based on the body’s natural ability to heal itself. So what exactly are the benefits to receiving regular massage and/or bodywork treatments? - Increases circulation, allow-ing the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs. - Stimulates the flow of lymph, the body’s natural defense system, against toxic invaders. For example, in breast cancer patients, massage has been shown to increase the cells that fight cancer.

- Increased circulation of blood and lymph systems improves the condition of the body’s largest organ - the skin. - Relaxes and softens injured and overused muscles- Reduces spasms and cramping- Increases joint flexibility. - Reduces recovery time, helps prepare for strenuous workouts and eliminates subsequent pains of the athlete at any level.- Releases endorphins - the body’s natural painkiller - and is being used in chronic illness, injury and recovery from surgery to control and relieve pain. - Reduces post-surgery adhesions and edema and can be used to reduce and realign scar tissue after heal-ing has occurred. - Improves range-of-motion and decreases discomfort for patients with low back pain.- Relieves pain for migraine sufferers and decreases the need for medication.- Provides exercise and stretching for atrophied muscles and reduces short-ening of the muscles for those with restricted range of motion.- Assists with shorter labor for expectant mothers, as well as less need for medica-tion, less depression and anxiety, and shorter hospital stays.Get a massage today!

ming or, for the more adventurous, cliff jumping. The water from the peaks of the Maya Mountains rusher over giant granite rock outcrop-pings and down the waterfall. The foot-path to the falls is a 15-minute hike and involves some dif-ficult climbing down hand hewn stairs to the valley below. Once to the water, you must walk over the large slabs of not-so-flat and some-times slippery gran-ite to reach the falls. This site is amazing, but only for those who are in moderate physical condition.

Rio Frio Cave The massive mouth of the Rio Frio cave is its signature. Belize potentially has the

largest cave system in Central America, with the dome of Rio Frio being the larg-est in the country as well. Belize has an abundance of lime-stone rock, hence an abundance of caves. Caves are formed when the relatively soft limestone rock is eroded by water over millennia.

Rio Frio Cave is located in the Moun-tain Pine Ridge area, in Augustine, about five miles past the Douglas de Silva Forest Station. Upon arrival at Rio Frio Cave, visitors can park not too far from the entrance, and a short walk reveals the massive 65-foot arched entrance. Large boulders, some covered with moss,

allow for climbing high up along the side near the wall of the cave, and stepping-stone stairs have also been set to make the hike easier. When inside the cave, the other large entrance (or exit) can also be seen, as the entire cave is less than half-mile long. A river runs through the cave, and in the dry season, it is pos-sible to hike through to the other side. This less traveled path reveals another trail outside the cave, and some smaller caves are accessible from here. Flashlights are always a good idea, but are not neces-sary, as the cave has natural light filter-ing through most of the day, since both entrances are not far

from each other.

A visit to the enor-mous Rio Frio Cave is highly recom-mended, when in the Mountain Pine Ridge area. This is probably one of Belize’s least

ness.• To access the pools and falls for swim-ming, you must either descend many stairs and then ascend them back up or take on a bit of a hike with the foot path.• If you don’t want to tackle the steep and slippery hike back up from the pools, just

bring your camera and enjoy the spec-tacular view.• Once you are at the site, you can increase your adventure level by jumping from boulder to boulder to get to farther pools and falls.• Bring Hat, towel, swimsuit, sunscreen, water, insect repel-lant, camera, and

raingear if needed.• Dress: Long pants and sturdy protective footwear — sleeve lengths are optional.• Distance: Approxi-mately 12 to 13 miles from San Ignacio Town• Departure: Daily tours leave at 8:00 am• The Mountain Pine Ridge is located

within 300 square miles of forest re-serve and you will encounter an entirely different tropical ecosystem along with its unique flora and fauna. Orchids and ferns of many varieties grow abun-dantly throughout the pine forest while rare and endangered bird species such as the orange-breasted falcon and the king vulture may be sighted.• So if you want to get a reprieve from the heat in Belize consider visiting Rio on Pools water falls.

Big Rock Falls Big Rock Falls is a 150-foot waterfall on Privassion River, in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve of the Cayo District of southern central Belize. An impressive 60-foot waterfall is part of the Vaca Plateau boasting two large, deep emerald pools filled with spring wa-ter perfect for swim-
