What to do?

Black Hole Drop

Stretch Your Comfort Zone as you rappel down into a jungle sink hole deep in the

rainforest. This expe-dition starts off with a vigorous hike into the foothills of the Maya Mountains.

The edge of the

Actun Loch Tunich sink hole is over 300 feet above the basin below and 200 feet above the rain-forest canopy that grows out from the sink hole basin.

Actun Loch Tunich sink hole is not actu-ally black but since you can’t see the bot-tom from the start, this definitely adds an additional ele-ment of excitement.Horticulture Train-

ing at Belize Botanic Gardens is a 10-week course comprised of mornings in the classroom learning to about various plants, how to iden-tify them, where and when to plant them and after-

noons doing practi-cal training in plant ID, propagation, grafting, pruning, weeding, watering, landscape design –and more.

On The Job Training (OJT) is a 12-week course of practical train-

ing which teaches students all of the necessary skills to obtain a job as a gardener. A num-ber of our students have started their own nursery and lawn care busi-nesses so there is opportunity for entrepreneurs.

With the growth of the tourism industry in Belize hotel owners and other businesses are requiring skilled gardeners to help maintain their grounds so this job market is wide-open for the dedi-cated individual.

We have trained both men and women from youths as young as 16 to mature people in their 40’s and 50’s. The main requirement is a love for gardening and the wish to be-come employed!

Guides provide helmets and safety equipment as they rig a system of rap-pelling ropes for your decent to the basin below. The first 10 feet provides the adrenaline, the next 200 feet features an unforgettable experi-ence and sights to

behold, and the final 100 feet plunges you down through the rain forest canopy.

Feeling relief reach-ing the bottom, the question now be-comes ...

How do we get out?

This expedition is not for the faint of heart

and all participants

must be relatively fit. San Ignacio Town

Known locally as “Cayo”, San Ignacio is a unique blend of America’s Old West and tropical back-water with frontier-like wooden shops on narrow streets.

Burns Avenue is “Main Street” and a good place to begin a tour of the town.

Most days it’s a busy thorough-fare with lots of people walking in the streets. Burns Avenue and the adjacent streets are packed with shops, hotels and places

to eat where hospi-table towns people mingle in restau-rants, bars and wooden shops.San Ignacio market

Saturday Market

Many of our guests take the opportuni-ty to visit the local market.

Saturday (early) is the best time and day to go, as it’s the busiest market day and along with the wide variety of fruits and vegeta-bles offered, there are also plenty of food vendors pre-paring fresh local fare such as, tacos,

tamales, pupusas (right), along with homemade breads, cheeses and yo-gurts for you to

sample. There are also plen-ty of hand-made crafts and gift items to inspect and a place that sells lo-cal medicinal and cooking herbs. Do all this while shar-ing a taste treat and

mingling amongst the locals in the fes-tive atmosphere of this bustling market place.

Iguana Conservation Project

The Iguana Con-servation Project is located at the San Ignacio Hotel. Here you will have the opportunity to

take a closer look at these descendants of dinosaurs and learn how vital they are to the ecologi-cal balance of the Macal River eco-system. This hands-on tour is both fun and educational and takes about an hour to complete.

Located on the highest hill over-looking the town is where to find Cahal Pech, a partially excavated Maya archeological site. There site has a visitors’ center con-taining artifacts and a reconstructed model of the site.l
