Dear Parents,

The week started with a ghastly and violent murder on Battledown (our smaller cricket ground) as a peregrine falcon chose one of our local magpies for lunch. My attempt to photograph the incident (with a phone from the road) was almost immediately trumped by Mr Deakes who took a photo of a water rail (a very secretive bird) that has taken up residence in our wildlife garden. There aren’t too many schools in the UK where you would see both birds on the campus.

A similar killer instinct was displayed by many of our sportsmen and women this week. The craze of indoor rowing started by Mr Sanders meant that our team went to the South West Championships and dominated the event. Similarly the staff netball team - the All Blacks - showed that despite the cruel ravages of time our staffroom contains many top class athletes.

Unbelievably today marks the halfway point in the school year. Time for a mini-break with a crucial half term to come for our public exam students.

Prep School NewsDear Parents,

Our G2L charity group has been particularly busy this week. Starting off by leading Monday’s assembly with Mrs Willis-Butcher, the children spoke about Edukid’s aims and how money raised is spent supporting education in Uganda. This was then followed up with a very popular cookies and hot chocolate sale on Tuesday morning. From making the cookies to advertising the event and serving up, the group of Joe, Albert, Evie, Jack and Felix did an excellent job.

At the end of last week, some of our Year 6 children took part in the regional indoor rowing competition at Bideford College. In a sport very new to all of them, they did well. Alfie finished second in his heat and took a bronze overall. Other results from the heats include Keith (3rd), Albert (5th), Billy (7th), James (13th), Jack (13th) and Ben (15th). We look forward to some House rowing soon.

Other events during the week have included the latest High 5 netball match against Holsworthy Federation, under 9 mixed football at St. Petroc’s, under 11 fixtures against Kingsley and a trip to Homeleigh Garden Centre for Pre-School.

We heard some impressive news this week about Lottie, who is a Royal Marine Cadet with the Plymouth Division. Lottie is currently ending her Phase 1 training, meaning that in June, she will be attending a Junior Command Course and will be promoted to Lance Corporal. Well done Lottie.

The latest Informal Music Concert of took place yesterday afternoon, with a number of children stepping forward and performing. It was a very enjoyable event, and our thanks to Mrs Parker, Mrs Cornish and Mrs Frith for all of their hard work preparing the children for the concert and also for the external music exams coming up.

Staying on the musical theme, three of our musicians performed extremely well in Monday’s assembly. Lottie sang, Jemima played the cello and Lydia played the violin. Congratulations also to our golden sticker winners: Lucy, Finley, Scarlett, Ahmad, Arron, Elsie and Isobel. Our BAFTA winner was Bella, and Charlie won the Manners Medals. Well done to them all.

I hope you have a good half-term break.

Matthew Foale

News from the Pre-SchoolAs a follow up to the Edukid Fundraiser the Pre-School children have been looking at how some children, who are the same age, live in other parts of the world. They were set a challenge to think of two things they could give the children to make their lives better. This really got the children thinking very hard and one fantastic suggestion was to build them a house with a leaking roof so that when it rains the water could be collected in containers.

Whilst making Valentine cards on Wednesday the children were encouraged to discuss the life they have and send some appreciation to their loved ones.

A wonderfully sunny Valentine’s Day was spent at Brooks Garden Centre, Bude. As part of our growing topic and to prepare for the arrival for our new raised beds the reception children went to look at some plants, choose some seeds and have fun in the soft play.
