Dear Fellow Knights,

This is our last newsletter for this fraternal year and I want to thank SK Edd Ruiz and SK Patrick McMahon for all their hard work throughout the past year putting these newsletters together and keeping them full of useful information. They invest a lot of time doing this and we owe them a debt of gratitude.

I can honestly say that this past year has been noteworthy for this council. We have accomplished a great deal in both fundraising and supporting our charities. We raised sufficient money to not only support our charities but also support others such as St. Cyril’s with hymnals, the Newman center with windows, and Deacon Ed’s effort with the Life Teens here at St. Thomas. We paid to send a deserving parishioner to St. Joseph’s Youth Camp, and we supported Coats for Kids and the Southern Arizona Special Olympics. It was indeed a banner year and you can take pride in all that you accomplished.

I especially want to thank a very talented group of officers who served with me and were always there to answer the call. Serving with you has been a privilege. Thanks also to all those who stepped up to fill officer positions for the next fraternal year. Without gentlemen such as yourselves, a council would cease to function, so you keep this legacy intact. I wish you and your families the safest and happiest of summers. September will be here before you know it, so enjoy the break.

Vivat Jesus,

Bill Neer, Grand Knight

                What’s In Your Heart?

Deacon Ed Sheffer 1 John 3:23 is a Scripture passage quite often used to promote personal agenda, but rarely is the fuller meaning comprehended: And his commandment is this: we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another as he commanded us. What does this really mean, what is the real point of this statement? John is saying that only by being truly united to Christ can we draw strength through the Spirit. Why was this so important then and is it relevant now? Some in the early church community were beginning to promote division. They were beginning to disregard the commandment to love neighbor. Some were refusing to accept faith in Christ as the source of sanctification and denied the redemptive value of Jesus’ death. John was finding fault with pious Christians who developed petty hatreds and uncaring indifference. These words that Jesus handed on to John are actually a condemnation to extreme ideological positions like those threatening the Church today - dogmatic conservatism, which makes creedal orthodoxy the only criterion for faith, and fideism in which all that matters is accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, as well as liberalism, which reduces Christianity to living peacefully with others, where it’s enough to just seek what is socially just. What is being said is there is a necessary relationship required between both God and other human beings. Relationships based on love. He is saying categorically, that salvation doesn’t depend on intense religious experience – being born again. Nor does it rest in dramatic charismatic expressions like speaking in tongues, or laying hands. Rather, we are saved because we are members of Christ – of his Church, the community gifted with God’s Spirit, in which the Holy Spirit’s presence is corroborated by our genuine, active, and loving concern for each other. Here we are twenty one centuries later and what happened in the early church continues to repeat itself. Some still come to church in search of spiritual handouts and others to fulfill some sense of obligation. And others think that creating their own splinter church isn’t leading others astray, that this doesn’t go against the unity Christ prayed for before he gave up his life for the Church. The deep Spirit and Truth Jesus spoke of will always remain hidden from those who are full of themselves, for in presumptuousness there is no room for God. It is the heart that is open that is on the path to love. We need to be vigilantly aware that God’s perfect love does not allow Him to be indifferent to what happens to you or me. Nor should we ever be lukewarm to God, for when one begins to be indifferent to God they are disconnected from the source to their better selves. My fellow Knights, this growing unconcern for God is the cause leading to indifference to others. It is what is leading more and more to indifference of all creation. It is influencing one to think that they are the source for their life that they are self-sufficient, self-made men. Let us never be indifferent to God or anyone else. Let us not allow our Catholic faith to be reduced to ethics or a philosophy of life. Christ revealed the truth of life. His supreme act of love is not passing, it endures all things. It is the seed meant to produce the fruit of eternal life. By this fruit God is indeed glorified. May we always check our heart and see what’s really there, so that we might be truly united to Christ and draw strength through the Spirit.

~ FIELD AGENT ~ Is Your Paycheck Protected?

Most people see work as something that will always be there. We live our lives expecting to wake up, go to work, and complete our tasks throughout the day to provide for our families. Work, and the financial stability that it provides, is often taken for granted. What if one day you wake up and you are no longer able to go to work, through no fault of your own? Accidents and illness can affect anyone, at any stage in their career. How will you react to unforeseeable adversity? Do you have a plan in place if you are no longer able to perform your duty?

The Knights of Columbus can help you put this plan in place and prepare for unexpected life events. Retirement is often planned, but disability is not. Chance favors no man. Too often people say “that will never happen to me” or “I will cross that bridge if it comes.” There is no bridge that carries you over the void from gainful employment to disability unless you start planning today.

Disability insurance is often dismissed by working men and women because they think their jobs are fairly safe. Their lives are fairly healthy. Disability — they say — is simply something they will never experience. The statistics tell a different story.

According to the United States government, a staggering 1 in 4 of today’s 20-year-olds will become disabled before reaching the age of 67. The nature of the job is irrelevant. According to the Social Security Administration, 95 percent of all disabling illnesses and accidents happen outside of the workplace.*

Consider a typical male, age 35, non-smoker, who works at an office job with some outdoor responsibilities and leads a very healthy lifestyle. He has a 28 percent chance of being injured or becoming ill and unable to work for three months or longer prior to retirement.**

If this happens to you, not someone else, will you have a bridge to carry you and your family? If your illness or injury is among the 95 percent that happen outside of work, workers’ compensation will be of no assistance to you. 7 in 10 employed Americans say they would feel the financial pinch in a month or less without their paycheck.*** What if your last paycheck really is your last paycheck?

There is a solution, however. Your membership in the Knights of Columbus gives you and your eligible family members exclusive access to disability income insurance that can help safeguard your paycheck. With Knights of Columbus Disability Income Insurance, you can ensure you and your family are provided for in the event of unexpected loss of work.

Our disability income insurance is designed to be flexible so that, working with your brother Knight field agent, you can customize it to fit your needs. You choose the monthly benefit amount that’s right for you, the elimination period that makes the most sense, and the maximum benefit period for your policy.

By purchasing a disability income insurance policy from the Knights of Columbus, you have the added security of knowing that you are doing business with a Catholic company that makes sure its investments do not violate Church teaching and which has been repeatedly recognized as a “World’s Most Ethical” company. ****

You owe it to yourself and to your family to make sure that your financial future is secure, regardless of what happens. Don’t be caught off guard by surprises. Be on guard and be prepared.

“That the lay faithful may fulfill their specific mission, by responding with creativity to the challenges that face the world today.” Pope Francis’ Intention for May. We well know that the Knights of Columbus have taken “their specific mission” to heart. We have only to read Columbia each month to find the many ways that Knights have responded in their parishes, home countries, and abroad to various crises. And I have only to read “The Desert Knightline” to see how this is true of Council #10441, locally and beyond. It is clear that we have the more active and visible members of the Council and the less obviously active members, who contribute to the specific mission in more private ways. As the Fraternal Year ends, it will be good for each of us to review his own response to the challenges around him. There will be much over which to be glad, and some things to regret. Bring both to God in your prayer. If you are wondering how to do that, after a little time of quiet reflection say a decade of the rosary, keeping alert for anything that God may put into your mind. Why the rosary? Well, May is Mary’s month, which ends with the feast of the Visitation. Mary’s response to hearing that she would give birth to the Savior of the World was not to go out and brag to everyone, but to hasten to a town in Judah to bring her support during her cousin Elizabeth’s pregnancy. That’s the kind of response of Mary’s Knights too! God bless you through all the ways you respond daily to personal and wider challenges, Chris Corbally, S.J.
