The GP may contact case managers for the MAU via the central hub (bed bureau). The GP can discuss the patient condition and history with dedicated clincial staff via

telephone and an appointment is then arranged for the patient at the appropriate MAU, where the patient will be seen by a Medical Consultant and their teams.

Patients with acute medical conditions who do not require access to Critical Care may be referred by their GP to an MAU in Ennis, Nenagh or St John’s.

Acute Medical Unit (AMU)University Hospital Limerick

All acute medical presentations to the Emergency Department at University Hospital Limerick who do not require critical care are transferred to the AMU.

Following assessment by Medical Consultant and their teams, patients are either admitted, transferred to another hospital site in the UL Hospitals Group or discharged.Some patients following assessment may require follow

up by the Acute Medical Physician post discharge, and this follow up appointment is arranged before patients leave the MAU.

The SAU is linked to a dedicated 24/7 emergency theatre, and the surgical rosters provide a “surgeon of the week” including a “surgical team for the week” model of acute service delivery. This ensures timely access to senior decision makers, timely access to operating theatres, and a predominantly Consultant delivered model of care.

This model has been cited as the ideal way of providing acute emergency surgery care, and provides a separate patient flow pathway, as is recommended in the UK RCSI report 2007, and the National Clinical Programmes for Surgery RCSI.

The Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) is a well established model of acute surgical care in UL Hospitals Group. It has a proven track record (published) in providing quality and timely care to acute surgical patients, and impacts positively on the pre op length of stay and overall length of stay.

Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU)

The following criteria must be met prior toreferral to the SAU:• 14 years of age and over• Haemodynamically stable• GP referral letter with patient• Acute Surgical problem• GP or referring Doctor must have seen patient and must have

made contact with the unit.

The following categories are not suitable for referral to the SAU:• Uncomplicated Cellulitis• Head Injuries• Gynaecological patients• Oral and Maxillofacial patients• ENT patients• Orthopaedic patients• Urology patients• Trauma or RTA patients• Unstable patients or patients requiring 999 ambulance• Pregnant women presenting with abdo pain must attend the

Maternity hospital first to rule out an obstetric issue

Injury Units treat adult patients and children aged over five with minor injuries such as suspected broken bones, sprains and strains, facial injuries, minor scalds and burns.

Injury Unit (IU)

What the Injury Unit Treats Any Adult or Child age 5 and older with:• Suspected broken bones to legs from knees to toes• Suspected broken bones to arms from collar bone to

finger tips • All Sprains and strains • Minor Facial Injuries (including oral, dental and nasal injuries)• Minor scalds and burns • Wounds, bites, cuts, grazes and scalp lacerations• Small abscesses and boils(adults only) • Splinters and fish hooks • Foreign bodies in eyes/ears/nose • Minor head injury (fully conscious patients, who did not

experience loss of conciousness or vomit after the head injury)

What the Injury Unit does not treat• Conditions due to Medical illness e.g. fever, seizures,

headache • Injuries following a fall from a height or a road traffic

accident • Serious head injury • Injury causing chest pain, abdominal pain or shortness

of breath • Chest Pain • Respiratory conditions • Abdominal pain • Gynaecological problems • Neck/back pain • Pregnancy related conditions • Pelvis or hip fractures • Injuries due to self harm • Any child of any age with a medical illness e.g. fever,

seizures, respiratory symptoms • Any child younger than 5 years • Any child aged 5 years or older with - Non-traumatic limp or non use of a limb - Injuries following a fall from a height or a motor vehicle collision - Serious head Injury - Abdominal pain - Gynaecological problems - Injuries following a fall from a height or a motor vehicle collision - Injuries due to self harm - Neck pain or back pain

E-Referrals and Centralised Referral Management SystemE-Referrals are live at UL Hospitals for all specialities (non NCCP referrals). This is a secure, speedy and traceable way of sending referrals to Consultant Services at UL Hospitals. GPs may submit a referral electronically using the HIQA approved referral form on Healthlink (practice management system). Referrals are emailed directly to the hospital and GPs immediately receive an acknowledgment confirming receipt of same. Once the receiving Consultant has reviewed and clinically graded the referral a further email is issued to the GP to advise the outcome.

A Centralised Referral Management System has been established at UL Hospitals.
