Brazos Valley Meeting

Location: Improving Enterprises 1700 Research Parkway #260 College Station, TX 77845

Presentation: Necessary Bridges: Public Speaking and Storytelling for Project Managers and Engineers In this talk Rashid will: 1. Evangelize public speaking and storytelling (PS&ST) 2. Persuade the audience to upgrade their commitment to PS&ST expertise. 3. Argue that PS&ST expertise foreshadows communication and leadership prowess. 4. Discuss glossophobia (fear of public speaking) its origins and how to manage it. He will also debunk some myths associated with it. 5. Propose that PS&ST is a “connection” enabler The world of project management and engineering is too disassociated from the world of PS&ST. Having always seen himself as an ambassador for his storied and challenging professions, Rashid N. Kapadia has made it a life mission to bridge these two estranged worlds. President Eisenhower observed Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it. Rashid inadvertently discovered that PS&ST expertise is part of the neurobiological code powering this essential leadership art.

Speaker: Rashid N. Kapadia

Rashid N. Kapadia, a marine engineer and project manager for decades, discovered the transformational power of public speaking, storytelling and oratory after joining a Project Management Institute (Houston) sponsored Toastmasters club, He also discovered, to his surprise and dismay, that too many project managers, I.T. professionals, engineers and other “technical experts” seriously underappreciate—even shun—these transformative skills.

Thought Leadership in Project Management

This month’s article elaborates on the study carried out by the authors Thomas Gillier, Sophie Hooge and Gérald Piat

about Framing value management for creative projects: An expansive perspective. The authors propose a Value Management

(VM) framework focused on the evaluation and management of creative projects that are based on innovative fields of knowledge

(technologies, creating new products categories; markets, conceiving new ones; business models, transforming industrial

structures), which value is not known by the time the project starts, but it is formulated through the project. The literature have

exposed that projects that have high level of innovativeness and consequently, high level of uncertainty, need management

principles that differ significantly from those used for managing routine projects. The study explores what is the value to be managed

in creative projects, how is this value managed and for whom it is managed.

The authors carried out a collaborative management research at Renault and the creative project that served as a basis

for the study was the “Low Carbon Emission Mobility” (LCEM), intended to develop new businesses for the next generation of

electric vehicles. The single case was investigated through direct observation. Then, multiple data collection methods and

triangulation techniques were applied to formulate the framework. A first part of the creative project involved the identification of

strategic knowledge areas and their availability for the firm (available, on-going learning and missing knowledge). The developed

analytical framework is based on the Concept-Knowledge theory of innovative design reasoning (Gillier et al., 2010; Hatchuel and

Weil, 2009).

In first place, the authors suggest that the value to be managed can be found through the investigation of the common

unknown, founding the field that motivates all members individual’ learning. This will be performed by learning missing knowledge

(through identification of knowledge gaps), imagining new concepts (to impulse the investigation of missing knowledge) and building

new evaluation criteria (identifying individual learning interests and preferences). In second place, regarding the way that value is

managed in creative projects, the authors propose the design of value comparing the distance (conceptual gap) between the

dominant designs and associated rules to break and later, explore new design paths and monitor that distance between the

innovation field and the dominant design. In third place, to identify for whom the value is managed, the authors propose the

identification and involvement of potential beneficiaries, including internal R&D stakeholders and other valuable stakeholders. Also

in this respect, the authors suggest the building of new ecosystems, through the identification of potential beneficiaries of the new

design paths and the commitment of internal decision makers on a disruptive strategy of learning.

In conclusion, the authors’ analysis showed that VM in creative projects requires a completely different framework

compared to regular projects. The evaluation of creative projects is not possible through the measuring of financial results and

adherence to cost/quality norms and so, it requires new indicators of the innovativeness (e.g. number of new design rules). Also,

the way to manage value during the project life cycle differs in the sense that in regular projects, the involved people monitor and

adjust their activities to meet the final goal. In creative projects, the expected final state is unknown, and then the individuals do

not adjust their activities to the final state, but to the initial state to be changed. Taking this into account, the authors developed the

framework for VM in creative projects, through the identification of what is the value to be managed, how is this value going to be

managed and for whom it will be managed.

PMIH Education Foundation Awards Scholarships

PMI Houston Education Foundation Awards $40,000 in Scholarships

The Project Management Institute (PMI) Houston Education Foundation has awarded $2000 scholarships to 20 Houston-area undergraduate and graduate students in fields emphasizing the importance of project management. These generous scholarships support students and are also one of the many ways that the organization fosters excellence in the project management profession. The application process was competitive and PMIHEF Academic Outreach Director, David Thomas, spoke enthusiastically about the program. “This is the first year our scholarship program will be run by the PMI Houston Educational Foundation and the second year that PMI Houston has a great opportunity to give back to the local Project Management community. We first awarded $40,000 to celebrate PMI Houston's 40 years of service to the community in 2014. This year brings another $40,000 in scholarships to further the education of the next generation of Project Managers.” SHSU Associate Professor of Management, Dr. Pamela Zelbst, expressed her gratitude for the PMI Houston Education Foundation’s support. “In 2014 and 2015, a total of 32 scholarships have been or will be awarded to Sam Houston State University students in the College of Business Administration. We thank PMI Houston for their generous support of our students.” Scholarship recipient and Sam Houston State University (SHSU) student David VanHorn explained that in addition to working full time as a Project Manager, he is a full-time student and will soon earn a M.S. in Project Management. “The scholarship is not just a financial benefit - it is a great opportunity that really means something to me.” After a few more years of work experience, VanHorn plans to return to school for a Ph.D. in Operations Management and hopes to use his project management skills to give back to the community. Amanda Jezierski is also a current student at SHSU with plans to graduate with an MBA in December 2015. The aspect of project management that Jezierski enjoys most is turning needs into qualitative and quantifiable results. “I am very grateful to use the scholarship from the PMI Houston Education Foundation to help pay for my last semester's tuition at SHSU. I look forward to learning more about project management as a discipline and hope to use the skills towards a project management career in the future.” This year’s scholarships will be awarded through the recently established PMI Houston Educational Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
