In the past interior design seemed pretty simple. Buy a gigantic bit of black plastic, the TV, and form the house around it. Position furniture within its gravitational field and keep it within visual reach of the kitchen. Easy!

Then things changed.

TVs became pretty. Thinner than catwalk models, moulded of glass and brushed metals and some even emitting rays of carefully chosen light. You switch it on and the visual performance is consummate to the design. But then there’s the sound. The thin, sleek design often doesn't allow for an equally impressive audio.

Beautiful light: Featured here, the Philips 42PFL7406H, rumoured to be due in December, throws light onto your wall in response to the on-screen image

Something needed to happen fast.

For those willing to put in the effort, separate in-wall speakers or box speakers are the solution. There’s no degree of picture quality that will give you goose bumps like an amazing sound system. Having said that, for all their personality, they will require space, cabling and, in some cases, a divorce.

Our system of choice: The MK Sound S150THX – it probably reminds you of that girl that you refused to introduce to your mother, but it sounds absolutely amazing – demo by appointment only

The sound bar is the happy medium. Great sound without the cables and effort of a full surround system.

On a sour note: The new LG EM9600 55" TV is a thing of beauty and as thick as a pencil, but just don't expect to get true audio

Sound bars come in a dizzying array of brands, features and technologies, so here’s an attempt at narrowing down the correct choice. Let’s consider the Wintal WSB11 and the full Yamaha range of 8 sound bars.

Virtual 7.1 or just good sound?

Sound bars will either focus on the sound quality only or attempt to give the impression of immersive sound coming from all angles. Yamaha are pioneers of virtual surround, offering ‘Air Surround’ or 'IntelliBeam'. For smaller rooms Air Surround might be fine, but oddly shaped rooms or larger rooms will probably be more suited to IntelliBeam. IntelliBeam literally uses the walls of the room to bounce the sound waves at the correct angle.

IntelliBeam

By monitoring the sound with the supplied microphone and analysing it, IntelliBeam automatically sets the best beam angles and mode, and optimises the level and frequency response of each beam. This makes initial setup both extremely simple and acoustically perfect.

Intelligent sound: Yamaha's IntelliBeam technology uses audio reflections to not simply simulate rear audio — but to actually create it!

Will 2013 be the year of the Sound Bar?60,000

At last count, our manufacturer of the Wintal WSB11 Sound Bar and Wireless Subwoofer, was selling 60,000-70,000 units per month into the US.

Connections

TV Audio Boosters receive audio from the TV via the optical out and improve the quality. More elaborate sound bars will function as a hub, where all the devices are plugged into the sound bar and a single HDMI cable is fed into the TV.

Simplifying TV Cabling: Sound bars can act as a hub for all your inputs, so only 1 lead has to be run to your TV — not only improving your TV's sound, but also its aesthetics and installation cost

Design

Sound bars are designed to be flat up against the wall or to sit below the TV on furniture. The models designed to sit below the TV are often wall mountable, but their appeal is in how easy they are to install. Some of these new models feature an IR repeating feature also. This feature is required when the sound bar obstructing the line of sight between the IR remote control and the IR receiver on the TV.

Clearing the clutter: With the option of mounting on the wall, or below the TV, sound bars offer a more aesthetically pleasing alternative to 5-7 speakers scattered around a living space. Top: Yamaha YAS-101Bottom: Yamaha YSP-5100

Sub or no sub

The invention of the subwoofer surely rivals such things as fire, the wheel and the late night kebab, but some people don’t like them?! They add amazing bass, essential for movies, but they also take up living room real estate, cost extra dollars and sometimes involve cabling. In the interests of again saving marriages, some models have wireless subwoofers, such as the Wintal WSB11 or adapters to make subwoofers wireless.

Sub out: The YAS-101 is the only Yamaha sound bar that does not have an external sub-woofer, but does offer a sub-out if you want to add one later

Extra bells and whistles

The most sort after ‘extra’ is the ability to wirelessly send music to the sound bar. Bluetooth is a popular solution as it’s simple to set up and supported by most current devices, from laptops to phones and to tablets.

Blue note: Wintal's new WBD11 Bluetooth Receiver is a discrete way of streaming audio from Bluetooth enabled devices to your sound bar

The other sort after extras are wall mount kits, available for the YHT-S401 up, iPhone/iPad/iPod docks and FM tuners.

For the third year running Yamaha treated their top dealers to a feast of music, demos and new products for 2013 — this year the focus was centred on technology and purist audio.

The event kicked off on a sombre note with Yamaha saying that market researchers, Gfk, reported a 7% decline in the industry from last year and 21.6% decline from the height of the industry. Yamaha attributes this to a lower appreciation and awareness for true audio. So firstly, an acceptance for poorly compressed digital music and, secondly, ever thinner TVs with an emphasis on design over audio performance. This became a central theme to their presentations and product launches.

Craftsmanship: Yamaha released the Z11 and Z7 in 2008. Considered by some as the pinnacle of audio engineering. We are selling our last demo Z7 for $2,499 (rrp $4,499).

Yamaha identified the need for both innovation and craftsmanship. They would blend their technological advancements with the craftsmanship of the legendary Z-series receivers. The innovation is immediately evident as successive models have been released. In fact, just 4 years ago, the flagship RX-V3800 Yamaha receiver had only internet radio. Now, any receiver from the basic RX-V473 ($590) onwards has a host of network capabilities including the ability to control and source audio from the PC or from portable devices.

Full control: Even the most basic model now has a plethora of network functionality and source formats!

Improved GUIs: With the advent of HDMI, Full HD 1080p and now 4K resolutions, the on screen UI has improved leaps and bounds to improve aesthetics, ease of control, and access to the many new features now present

Bettering the craftsmanship of their older series receivers wasn't so easy. With some subtle design changes, like the unorthodox Yamaha 5th leg and copying the designs of past Z series receivers, they have succeeded. The RX-A3000 and RX-A3010 both won the prestigious Sound + Image awards. They no doubt expect the new RX-A3020 to again take out the prestigious award.

Yamaha went on to demo some of the new technologies that seek to improve upon the last series.

YPAO room calibration has undergone more advancements. Sound is increasingly having to adapt to the designs of the rooms and even the surfaces of the walls. To achieve this, new mics, multipoint setups, reflective sound RSC technology and even speaker angle measurement has been added to different receivers.

A new angle: For the first time, angle measurements, of speakers and reflections, have been incorporated in the flagship model, RX-A3020.

Dialogue lift and dialogue enhancement was on demo. These features seek to overcome the dilemma of centre channel speaker placement and vocals in multichannel audio by utilising the front presence speakers.

A prime candidate for Dialogue Enhancement: Okay, the verbal dialogue isn't that interesting, but without dialogue enhancement, it's just 2 hours of rumbling and exploding.

High resolution music enhancers for compressed music. An absolute essential as more music content is in a digital format.

Enhancement for Digital Music: Using complex algorithms, music enhancers aim to restore natural sound in digitally compressed sources.

Improved zoning via better app control, more flexibility and even an HDMI zone 4 for the flagship model.

Music lovers just went Spotify crazy!

It seems that all of the sudden, everyone is talking about Spotify! For those that haven't heard of Spotify, it's one of the world’s most popular subscription music services, giving users access to over 16 million songs. Songs, albums, album art – easy to use and yet loads of content for smart phone users!

After downloading it last week, I have been hooked. At the time of writing, Spotify was offering a free 2 day trial of their premium service and additional month if you leave your credit card details. It's a intentional ploy to get you hooked, with the premium service being free of ads and offering vastly better quality music — 320kbps vs 128kbps.

The mainstream manufacturers have jumped on board, so here's an overview of how they see it:

■ Devices with Bluetooth should come into favour as you can push Spotify from, say, a smart phone via Bluetooth to your equipment. If the equipment isn't Bluetooth enabled, just add a dongle like the Wintal WBD11 or ResiLinx RLBT110

■ Docks for say iPhones will also benefit, as Spotify will give access all the content you could ever want

■ Finally, Denon recently made a press release saying that some of their new receivers (AVR2113, AVR2313 and AVR3313) already have the required firmware built into their new models! We believe that this will mean that you either don't need the smart phone at all or you can instead just use the smart phone to control the receiver via the Denon app.

The Spotify premium service costs $11.99 per month. For more info, go to www.spotify.com/au/about-us/press/gday-australia/ or scan the QR code.

PS. I don't have shares in Spotify!

Devices like the tiny ResiLinx RLBT110 could become even more popular.

Whether you are installing an extractor fan, downlights or putting a masthead power supply in the roof, surface sockets are a pain. You need to strip cable, fasten screws, use backing covers and deal with lots of connections.

Pretty soon, there will be a better way.

The crimping surface socket requires almost no effort, using a screwdriver in a lever action, and should drop installation time of each socket from maybe 30 seconds to 5 seconds.

The crimping action forces a series of conductive teeth into the 3 core power cable. The plastic crimping mechanism also insulates the live power from any contact.

Check out the video for more information

Surface Mount Power Sockets

The Clipsal 413WE is probably the most common type of surface mount socket

not be future proofed, limiting the useful life of the product. As pricing for these modulation systems fall, we'll see MPEG4 as an important feature in the retail market also.

More audio power

The thin form factor has meant the LED LCDs are not suitable in cases due to their poor audio performance. The Wintal TVs feature an enlarged speaker cabinet, making them surprisingly powerful. As per previous models, the hotel lock feature will allow audio to be limited by a preset amount.

The new cabinet design allows an enormous amount of audio power.

Taiwan or Korean Panels

Like previous models, the Wintal panels will be of Taiwanese or Korean origin

rather than of Chinese origin. Korean and Taiwanese panels have been essential in building a reputation of reliability.

The line up includes four LG panels and one Taiwanese CMI panel.

The next generation of Wintal LED LCD TVs are due around the beginning of December with plenty of changes instore. Here's an overview:

More hospitality features

Over the past few years, we have seen the sales of Wintal TVs change from a purely retail market to both a retail and hospitality market. This was due to the availability of stock, reliability, service and due to the price competitiveness compared to higher priced professional hospitality TVs.

More efficient

Recognising the increasing costs of electricity, Wintal panels are moving from LCD to side lit LED panels. Energy ratings have not been accessed, though we should see significant savings over a 5 year period.

More future proofing

Unlike the majority of lower priced panels, the Wintal TVs will support MPEG4. This standard is required for many modulation systems. Not supporting MPEG4 may mean that the panel will

Ordering

The sizes will change to 19" 24" 32" 42" and 55" and pricing has been set for preorders.

Model numbers i.e. the 32" 32LED12FHD TV, are designated by Size (32") Technology (LED side lit) Year of release (2012) and Resolution (Full High Definition).

Flexible warranties

Warranties will become variable, so that commercial clients or even consumers can have peace of mind.

The warranty periods are 1 year, 3 years or 5 years. These warranties will continue to be in-house and only supported by our technicians.

Wintal LED LCD TV Range

Reliable panel manufacturers: Wintal's dedication to reliability and value bring you panels you can trust.

MPEG4 Compatibility: New video distribution systems like the Healing DCC304 Modulator require the TV to be MPEG-4 compatible making this a critical feature for the new Wintal LED LCD Range.
