Letter from the President

A happy new year for all our members. The months seem to go so quickly. For Gerard Aalberts and Mary Heuvelink, the year 2010 was their final year and we are very sorry to have lost them. Mary Heuvelink has been leading the coffee club for many years and their members will sorely miss her leadership and her outgoing personality. The people in charge of the Dutch Museum in Foxton are very up beat about it’s possibilities and the progress for the coming year. There is a big Mitre 10 warehouse in front of the windmill in Foxton that they want to buy and that they are going to share with the local library and a Moari cultural group. In October there was the AGM or ANCM as they call it from the Federation of Netherlands Societies to which we belong a n d f r o m w h i c h w e g e t o u r S c h a k e l . Frans and Sandra Schaeffers were both attending. It was decided that in future they will produce the Schakel only in digital form and send it over the internet to us to save money. We will then have to incorporate it into our local news letter It was also decided to eventually wind the Federation up and publish the relevant information on a website. Douwe Visser

Christmas Luncheon 2010 A successful event with plenty of delicious food. This event was well attend. A total of 96 people, including 45 of our friends from Tauranga joined in our Christmas celebra-tion. Everybody was very impressed with the decorations in the hall and presentation of the tables. This event is becoming a tradition, we hope this will be ongoing for many more years to come. We look forward to seeing you all again next Christmas.

Ton Kessels.

SINTERKLASS SOCIAL

The Sinterklaas Social which was celebrated on the 4th of December was well attended with a good mixture of 2nd Generation and older members who danced and sang the night away creating a great atmosphere. Part way through the night, a lively Sinterklaas and his jovial Black Pieter’s made their yearly visit to see who was naughty or nice and distributed gifts to those who had been well behaved during the year. Those who weren’t so good got dealt to by the Black Pieter’s! Most said they would try to improve their be-haviour before Sinterklaas visits next time. A fun and entertaining night was had by all.

WALKING FESTIVAL 18th,19th & 20th March

The event will be a great festival week of walking and include a number of community walks during the week leading into the big weekend of ‘International Walks’ 19-20 March 2011. For our Dutch members we will provide you with lunchtime refreshments.

The Walking Festival is all about getting people walking and providing walks that will suit just about everyone. For most walks you will only need a comfortable pair of shoes so it is the easiest form of exercise to get involved in and find out how beneficial it is to be outdoors and active.

Walks during the week will range from dog walks to easy tramps to kids walks to heritage walks and many more. The walks will start from various places and many are free to enter. We want to encourage as many people as possible to enter along with family, friends, workmates and to try several walks during the week.

Over the weekend the IML and IVV ‘International Walks’ will again include 21Km and 42Km on Saturday 19th and 20Km and 30Km walks on Sunday 20th. Also on the Sunday we will again have a guided two lakes scenic forest walk (22Km) which will also qualify for IML/IVV awards and a guided Tarawera Falls 10Km walk with boat trip. There will also be 10Km walks on Saturday and Sunday. Above information taken from www.nztwodaywalk.org.nz/
