Here are some of the more peculiar or funny ones.• Violators of a noise ordinance in Fort Lupton, Colo-rado, were sentenced to face the music by being made to listen to loud music by artists such as Barry Manilow and Dolly Parton.• In Niagara Falls, New York, a judge was so enraged by a cell phone going off during court that, when no one owned up to the phone, he threw the entire courtroom in jail.• In Delray Beach, Florida, a man was arrested after a dispute with his wife, who refused to give him his “lucky” boxer shorts.• In Cochocton, Ohio,a judge gave two young offend-ers an option in punishment for throwing beer bottles at ladies: 60 days in jail or one hour walking through down-town dressed as women. THE U.S. ON TRIAL! (continued):• Two teenage girls in Boca Raton, Florida, were arrested for a catfight over what one of them had posted on Myspace.• A man in Bristol, Pennsylvania, was arrested after robbing a house when he found himself un-able to leave. The man had entered the garage and locked the door behind him, only to discover he couldn’t get the automatic door to open. He re-mained in the garage for eight days, living on Pepsi and dog food until the startled owners came home.• A man in San Diego, California, was charged with stealing lobsters from traps. When the police arrived to arrest him, he hid the plundered lobsters in his pants. Ouch! • Shane Stant went before an Oregon judge to have his record expunged after a felony conviction for his part in the 1994 Olympic skating scandal that sidelined Nancy Kerrigan and put Tonya Har-ding in jail. His reason for wanting his record ex-punged? His felony was keeping him out of the Navy Seals.• In the 1991 film “The Super,” Joe Pesci played a slumlord who was sentenced to live in his own run-down apartment building. In 2008, a Cleve-land judge gave a man the same punishment: house arrest in his own dilapidated building.• A Los Angeles woman was charged with wast-ing police resources after she called 911 to report that her onion rings were cold after receiving them at a local fast food joint.• A woman in Lake Parsippany, New Jersey, was charged with disorderly conduct after making sev-eral 911 calls. She insisted that it wasn’t her fault, saying her German shepherd had made them with-out her knowledge.

• A Georgia judge got tough on graffiti by order-ing vandalized businesses to remove the offending graffiti in 30 days or face a $1,000 fine.• Don’t steal Wi-Fi service in Florida, or you can face a felony charge. That’s what one man discov-ered after accessing a homeowner’s service while in his car. The homeowner reported the crime af-ter noticing an unfamiliar car parked in front of his house.

• A police chief in Washington, D.C., learned first hand about crime when his squad car was stolen a block from his home. He was disciplined for leav-ing his riot gear in the trunk.

• A man in Berkeley, California, received several ransom notes after a 6-foot bald Cyprus tree was stolen from in front of his house. The price of its return was the replanting of the tree in a place that didn’t obstruct the view of drivers in the neighbor-hood.

Special Senior Cats – Making a Difference One on One

(Part 2 of 4: Vinnie; Billie; Roxie and Columbine)

Senior cats are special companions for senior owners. Billie was the caretaker for two very kind senior owners in their late 80’s. The husband and wife adored their cat and Billie adored them. Billie’s job was to eat, sleep, play, entertain and interact with his people. Somehow in this triangle relationship each lived for the other and in the process everyone became younger and happier. Then Billie stopped eating, started to vomit and just layed around. The Cat Specialist staff ran a taxi service for the owners picking up Billie for the hospital visit. After extensive testing, imaging and a thorough physical exam it was determined that Billie was suffering from pancreatitis and severe inflammatory bowel disease. The treatment plan was a diet change, probiotics, monthly B vitamin injections, oral prednisolone and Leukeran. Billie bounced back and has been healthy ever since. So, life was great and the family prospered for 8 more years.

Last year mom died and dad was transferred to assisted living. What was to become of Billie? The family for a number of reasons could not adopt and take on Billie’s care. At that point the staff at Cat Specialist stepped forward and adopted Billie for his new job – “Kitty Greeter” at Cat Specialist. Our resident cat, Red Hook, and Billie have become great friends and share the “Greeter” duties. Billie is getting the best of care and he has a loyal client following. At 10 years of age we hope Billie will live double that with the best feline health plan around – he is our cat forever! Billie’s life has touched and change everyone’s life who has met him . . . that is what a companion cat is all about – LOVE and MEGA PURRS !

Zoisite is named after the Slovene scientist Baron Sigmund Zois von Edelstein. He was the first to realize that this mineral, first discovered in the Saualpe Mountains, a rolling mountain range in the Alps, could be fashioned into gemstones and other forms. Zoisite is often carved, used for jewelry, usually in relatively large pieces, also spheres, eggs, hearts, pyramids, and even palm stones. The green and pink zoisites have been used as jade substitutes. Tanzanite, a form of zoisite, is widely used as a gemstone. At least until after the September 11, 2001 attacks when a rumor was circulated throughout the gemstone marketplace that sales of tanza-nite had helped fund Osam bin Laden and the Al-Quaeda network. As a result, several jewelers, especially in the United States, imposed a boycott on further imports of the gem, and some of them even removed tanzanite-bearing jewelry from their active inventories. Eventually the U.S. State Department declared that there was no evidence to support the rumor so most jewelers lifted the boycott.

THIS IS A HAMMERBy Samantha Mazzotta

Stopping a Leak From Toilet Base

Q: I read your advice to Christine H. about figuring out where a puddle of water at the base of her toilet was coming from. You said that if no other source of the leak could be detected, such as from the inlet valve, she should contact a plumber to replace the seal at the base of the toilet. Why can’t she just tighten down the bolts on either side of the toilet base? This might fix the problem and cost zero dollars. -- Kent C., Atlanta

A: That’s certainly worth a try, since it really doesn’t cost anything. But be careful that the bolts (or really, the nuts securing the bolts) aren’t tightened too much, as they could crack the porcelain base, requiring a complete replacement of the toilet. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, a plumber should come in, at least in the case of Christine H. For hearty do-it-your-selfers who have some experience repairing pipes or replac-ing faucets, replacing the wax toilet seal can be done in an afternoon or less. And the quicker it’s done, the better, as the leak isn’t just causing an inconveniently wet floor; it could also be affecting the subfloor and causing silent water damage. To replace the toilet seal, you’ll need a new wax toilet ring, some plumber’s putty and a strong helper.Turn off the water at the shutoff valve, usually located on the wall behind and below the toilet tank. Flush the toilet, then remove as much water from the toilet bowl as possible, first using a small cup and then a sponge. Next, detach the inlet tube from the shutoff valve and from the base of the toilet tank.Unbolt the tank from the toilet base and carefully lift off. Then, unscrew the nuts attaching the base of the toilet to the floor. With your helper, carefully rock the toilet base back and forth to loosen the seals and caulking around the base, then lift the toilet base up.Next, tilt the toilet base so you can access the bottom and wipe away all the old putty and wax. Clean the floor and the area around the drain pipe as well, so it’s completely dry and free of putty.Put the replacement wax ring on the floor around the drain pipe. Then, place plumber’s putty around the foot of the toilet base -- one way is to create a putty “rope” and press it around the perimeter. With your helper, lift the toilet base and position it over the wax ring and drain pipe and bolts. Ease it into position by rocking and pressing the base down so that the new ring sits tightly in place. Attach the nuts to the bolts on either side of the base and tighten carefully.Reattach the tank to the base, attach the water supply line to the tank and shutoff valve, and turn on the water supply, checking to make sure the supply line connection doesn’t leak. Finally, trim away the excess plumber’s putty from the foot of the toilet.

HOME TIP: Does the toilet base need to be sealed to the floor? Yes, for a number of reasons, and because it’s re-quired by building code in most states.

STRANGE BUT TRUEby Samantha Weaver

It was British doctor and author Alec Bourne who made the following sage observation: “It is possible to store the mind with a million facts and still be entirely unedu-cated.”

In 2007, a world record was set off the coast of Brazil when a single wave was caught by 84 surfers.

Have you ever heard of a book called “Never Again” by Doug Nufer? Probably not -- it’s not on any bestseller lists and hasn’t been reviewed by any notable critics. It’s quite possibly unique in literary history, however; in its entire 192 pages, not a single word -- even basic words such as a, an, the, of and for -- is used twice.

If you were to stack up a million $1 bills, they would weigh about one ton.

The Twist dance craze in the 1960s changed the culture in America and spread around the world. Most people don’t realize, though, that the song “The Twist,” which start-ed the fad, wasn’t originally sung by Chubby Checker, though he was the one who sent the single up the charts and has since been irrevocably associated with the dance. The song was originally written and performed by an R&B singer named Hank Ballard. A deejay in Baltimore saw teenagers dancing to Ballard’s song and called Dick Clark, host of “American Bandstand.” Clark loved it and invited Ballard to perform the song on the show, but it didn’t work out. Instead, Clark found someone else to perform the song: Ernest Evans, who changed his name to Chubby Checker. It made his career.

Colonel Sanders started selling chicken when he was 65 years old, and his only goal was to make $1,000 a month.***Thought for the Day: “It takes only one drink to get me drunk. The trouble is, I can’t remember if it’s the thir-teenth or the fourteenth.” -- George Burns

Earth Day Lessons Can Apply to In-vestors, Too April 22 is Earth Day. Started in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson, Earth Day is designed

to create awareness of the Earth’s envi-ronment and to encourage conservation efforts. If you and your family partici-pate in Earth Day events, such as help-ing clean up a local park or taking mate-rials to a recycling center, you know the benefits of doing your part to improve your surroundings. But are you doing everything you can to upgrade your en-vironment for investing?

Actually, as an investor, you can learn a lot from the lessons of Earth Day. Here are just a few ideas:

Diversify. If you’re familiar with Earth Day, you know that it involves multiple activities, including educational programs and do-it-now action steps. This variety is necessary because protect-ing our environment is a complex challenge. Meeting your short- and long-term investment goals can be challenging, too, but you’ll have a better chance of success by diversifying your investment dollars across a range of vehicles, such as stocks, bonds, govern-ment securities and certificates of deposit (CDs). Diversification can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio — and high volatility can be an obstacle for some people trying to follow an investment strategy. (Keep in mind, though, that diversifica-tion, by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) Seek growth opportunities. Some people plant trees on Earth Day, hoping to watch them grow over the years. As an investor, you, too, need to plant “seeds” today in the hopes of growth in the future. That means, among other things, that when you purchase growth-oriented investments for the long term, you need to try to stick with them and not “uproot” them after short-term declines in price. Develop good habits. If you attend an Earth Day program, you will learn about many eco-friendly habits you can develop, from using energy-efficient light bulbs to recycling old computers and other electronic devices. To invest successfully, it's important to develop good habits, such as staying invested in all types of markets, seeking tax-advantaged investments and reviewing your portfolio regularly to make sure it’s still appropriate for your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term objectives. Avoid “toxins.” At some Earth Day events, you can learn about “green” substitutes for toxic chemicals in common household cleaners. When you invest, you may also want to avoid “toxins” — or at least “toxic” behaviors, such as chasing after “hot” stocks that are inappropriate for your needs or trading so frequently that you run up big fees, commissions and taxes. Think long term. Above all else, Earth Day is a reminder to us that we all want to leave a healthy planet to future generations — which means we need to make moves that are beneficial for the environment over the long term. When you invest, you also need to focus on the future. That means following a long-term invest-ment strategy and not getting sidetracked by short-term events, such as political crises and economic downturns.

Earth Day comes once a year, but its lessons can have a lasting impact on our environment. When you apply these same lessons to your own investment environment, you may be able to achieve some healthy results.

As part of our Colorado Children’s Author Series and in celebration of National Poetry Month, Macaroni Kid reviews There’s a Fly on My Toast! by Justin Matott.

If you and your kids are a Shel Silverstein fan, you will LOVE this poetry book just for kids! One of the best things about the book is that it comes with an audio CD, narrated by the author and others with funny voices and sound effects (including a talking fly that tells jokes). The poems are fun and silly and cover nearly every topic a child cares about, from giggling in church to breakfast to being afraid of the monster under the bed. Here’s one of our favorites:

MY BLANKIEIt’s tattered and it’s old. It’s seen a better day.My blankie is my favorite thing,I think it’s quite okay.I keep it in my pocket now,it used to look so nice.I love my favorite blankieso now I’ll hug it twice.

This is a book your kids will enjoy reading over and over again, and so will you! Visit the Macaroni Kid website for an EXCLUSIVE OFFER!

On May 6, 1911, George Maledon, the man who executed at least 60 men for “Hanging Judge” Isaac Parker, dies of natural causes in Tennessee. Paid $100 for each hanging, he tried to be a con-scientious hangman who minimized suffering with a quick death. Maledon considered the job “honor-able and respectable work.”

On April 30, 1927, the Federal Industrial Insti-tution for Women, the first women’s federal pris-on, opens in Alderson, W.Va. All women serving federal sentences of more than a year were to be brought there, with the vast majority imprisoned for drug and alcohol charges imposed during the Prohibition era.

On May 1, 1931, President Herbert Hoover of-ficially dedicates New York City’s Empire State Building. The entire 102-story building went up in just over a year, under budget (at $40 million) and well ahead of schedule. During certain periods of building, the frame grew an astonishing four-and-a-half stories a week.

On May 5, 1945, in Lakeview, Ore., six people are killed while attempting to drag a Japanese balloon out the woods. The explosive balloon was one of a handful of Japanese attacks against the continental United States, which were conducted by Japanese submarines and later by high-altitude balloons car-rying explosives or incendiaries.

On May 3, 1952, a ski-modified U.S. Air Force C-47 becomes the first aircraft to land on the North Pole. On the flight was Dr. Albert P. Crary, a sci-entist who in 1961 traveled to the South Pole by motorized vehicle, becoming the first person in history to have stood on both poles.

On May 4, 1965, San Francisco Giants outfield-er Willie Mays hits his 512th career home run to break Mel Ott’s National League record. Mays would finish his career with 660 home runs, good for third on the all-time list at the time of his retire-ment.

On May 2, 1972, Steven Spielberg begins filming “Jaws.” The production, which used three mechan-ical sharks to great effect, enthralled audiences and grossed $458 million in its theatrical release.
