Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday,” the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which begins the Christian season of Lent. It is also the last day of the Car- nival season. “Carnival” season is a period of feasting and fun that always begins on January 6, which in Chris- tianity is the Feast of Epiphany, following the “Twelve Days of Christmas.” While mostly celebrated in areas where Roman Catholicism is predominant, Epiphany is celebrated in other churches as well. • In New Orleans, parades happen for several weeks before Mardi Gras, but the largest and probably most fa- mous happen on the last weekend before and through Mardi Gras day. There are about a dozen held in New Orleans on Mardi Gras Day, with even more in the sub- urbs. Mardi Gras, Ash Wednesday and Lent are all impor- tant times for Catholics. MARDI GRAS PARADESby Patricia L. Cook

Next week, on February 21, many people around the globe will celebrate Mardi Gras. This issue of Tidbits will “laissez les bons temps rouler” (let the good times roll) as we explore this celebration. • The city most associated with Mardi Gras in America is New Orleans. PARADES (continued):• Another term used for Mardi Gras is “Shrove Tuesday.” Shrove is the past tense of “to shrive” and means “to go to or make confession.” Mardi Gras is known as the day to party. In New Orleans, when the clock strikes midnight, Lent starts, and the party ends. Mounted police lead a parade of street cleaners, clearing and cleaning the city.• Historians believe that French explorers Iber-ville and Bienville held the first American Mardi Gras on March 3, 1699. After a very difficult jour-ney down the Mississippi River, they landed about 60 miles south of New Orleans. They had a small celebration and named the area “Pointe due Mardi Gras.” Bienville also established “Fort Louis de la Louisiane,” which later became Mobile, Alabama. Many say that the first official Mardi Gras was held in Mobile in 1702. (During this time, before the Louisiana Purchase, Mobile was part of Loui-siana.) • For many years, New Orleans and other French settlements of the South marked the Mardi Gras holiday with street parties, masked balls and lavish meals. When the Spanish took control of New Or-leans, they abolished the rowdy celebrations. The bans were in force until Louisiana became a state in 1812. • Secret societies or clubs, called krewes, started forming as early as 1781. The first was the Per-severance Benevolent & Mutual Aid Association. Krewes started the parades as we know them to-day and keep them going. The krewes are private, non-profit organizations whose members plan and pay for their parades, costumes, throws and more. There are no sponsorships or city funds used. • By the late 1830s, there were processions of masked people with carriages and riding horse-back. Newspapers started announcing the Mardi Gras events in advance. More krewes formed, and today there are more than 50 parades in the Great-er New Orleans area.• On February 24, 1857, the Mistick Krewe of Comus, a secret society of businessmen, orga-nized a torch-lit procession with rolling floats and marching bands. This began the parade traditions that persist today. The parade was followed by a ball for the krewe and their guests. • Today the elaborate, invitation-only balls for the many krewes begin when Carnival Season starts on January 6. Each krewe elects a king and queen and their court. They wear masks and are never officially revealed; except for Rex, who as the King of Carnival, is revealed the day before the parade.• The Krewe of Rex, organized in 1872 by a group of businessmen, came up with the idea to

New canine cancer therapy could be mimicked in humans

Part 1 of 2Man’s best friend may help out their human cohorts by bringing in the paper or fetching someone’s slippers. But now our canine companions may help us find improved cancer drugs.

A study involving a new type of immunotherapy on companion dogs diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) may lead the way for a similar cancer treatment in humans.

Researchers from the University of Texas MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital in Houston, in collaboration with the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine in College Station, used an innovative type of T-cell therapy in addition to routine chemotherapy treatment. The researchers saw a nearly four-fold improvement in survival rates for the dogs that received both therapies in comparison to the dogs who just received chemotherapy treatment.

Ultimately, they were able to increase the dogs’ tumor-free survival by nine months. In a human life, that could equate to seven years.

Dr. Laurence Cooper, section chief of cell therapy at MD Anderson and senior investigator on the study, said their treatment on dogs could potentially be a very close mirror to human treatment, more so than other animal models.

“For years we’ve used mice and rodents as the model, but that’s reached the point of diminishing returns,” Cooper told FoxNews.com. “A mouse model in terms of human biology can be very helpful, but can have limitations when understanding the human immune system.”

The problem with mice and rodent models lies in the complexity of humans. Not only are humans so dissimilar from rodents, but individual people are also genetically dissimilar from one another. The dog mirrors that complexity with its diverse background in terms of breeds and intermingling.

Recycled Content Paint??? Is this stuff good???

That’s probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think about recycled content paint. At Green Sheen that’s the most common question. The answer is a definitive YES! It is not only good it’s often times better than virgin content paints and available at a fraction of the cost.

Have you ever looked at shades of a color from different manufacturers and liked one better? Not because it was a different shade of the color but because it was “nicer”, “more brilliant”, “deeper”, or “more complex”? That’s likely because one manufacturer uses different colorant than the next and thereby gets “better” colors. Because Green Sheen uses several different paint colors, rather than virgin colorants, to achieve their end product, their colors are often times described as being “nicer”, “more brilliant”, “deeper” and “more complex”.

Many Government and “Big Job” contractors have used Recycled Content Paint for years because of its environmental impact and cost savings. Now that it is becoming more widely available, Decorators the world over are more commonly using it because of its wide range of “more complex” colors.

What can you do? Next time you buy paint, buy Green Sheen. Next time you hire a Painter, demand that he use Green Sheen. The environmental impact is substantial and the cost savings are immediate and measurable. There is no down side! Even on small jobs, the savings add up.

THIS IS A HAMMERBy Samantha Mazzotta

Prepping for Spring

It’s still February, but spring planting season is just around the corner -- even in traditionally colder areas of the country like the Northeast,

which experienced a warm winter with little snow this year. That means homeowners should be go-ing over their outdoor lawn-care and garden tools and equipment, making sure everything is ready

to go when March roars in.If you treated wooden-handled tools with linseed

oil or other wood treatment and hung them up over the winter, take those tools down now and

wipe away excess oil and check for water damage or other problems. Make sure that hinged parts

move smoothly and are free of corrosion and dirt. Then, place the tools in an easily accessible place,

ready to grab when you need them.Lawnmowers and other equipment also need to be readied for the growing season, even though

it may be awhile before they’re needed. Take the lawnmower out of the garage or shed to a well-ventilated area. Check the blades to make sure

they’re free of rust and corrosion; if you detached the blades for storage, reattach now.

Turn the mower upright and, with the spark plug disconnected and the fuel tank empty, give the

starter cord a few pulls. Next, connect the spark plug and fill the tank with the proper fuel-oil mix-ture (see the manufacturer’s manual for details).

Start the mower and allow it to run for a minute or two. Then, shut it down and store it upright in an

easily accessible place, ready to use.Do the same with other outdoor equipment over the next couple of weekends. Not only will you

know that your tools are ready when the weather is, but you’ll be able to repair any damaged tools

or equipment before they’re needed.

HOME TIP: Keep tools dry and accessible by in-stalling a pegboard with adjustable hooks on one

wall of the garage, shed or workspace.

Tourmaline

Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewlers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666

There is an old Egyptian legend that says Tourma-line has a wide variety of colors because, as it made its way up from the center of the earth, it passed over a rainbow. In so doing, it took on all the colors of the rainbow. Indeed, if you like a variety of color in your gems, you will love Tourmaline. Even the name “Tourmaline” helps to define the gem as it comes from two Singhalese words “tura mali” which loosely translated means “stone with mixed colors.” There are Tourmaline gems from red to green and from blue to yellow. They often have two or more colors in a single stone. Some Tourmaline changes color when taken outdoors and then changes again when brought into artificial light. No two Tourmaline are exactly alike so you can probably find one to meet a variety of your personal needs or moods. The wide color spectrum of Tourma-line surpasses that of all other precious stones. In ancient times magical powers were attributed to this stone. Today it is considered the gemstone of passion and friendship. Some believe that if you give your beloved a Tourmaline that your love will be miraculously enduring.

have a King of Carnival. They held the first parade during the daytime. This krewe introduced the Mardi Gras song (“If Ever I Cease to Love”), the flag and the colors of purple, green and gold. Meaning was assigned to the colors in 1892: Purple for justice, green for faith and gold for power.

• While most parades require crowds to simply watch and applaud when floats pass, Mardi Gras crowds work hard to catch “throws.” This tradition started in 1871. The most popular throws are beads, plastic cups and doubloons. Dou-bloons are aluminum medallions, like large coins, that depict the parade theme on one side and the krewe’s emblem on the other. The first medallions appeared in 1884, with the Krewe of Rex, and the start of doubloons like those given out today started in 1960 also with Rex.

• The actual name for the Krewe of Rex is the School of Design. Rex, the King of Carnival, arrives by a boat that crosses the Mississippi River on the night before Mardi Gras. When Rex arrives, the Mayor of New Orleans presents him with the key to the city.

• One of the most popular and “different” parades held dur-

ing Mardi Gras in New Orleans is put on by the Krewe of Zulu. This krewe started in the early 1900s, with their first official appearance as Zulus in 1909. The group started from a group of black men who belonged to a Benevolent Aid So-ciety. These societies were the first forms of insurance in the black community where, for annual dues, members received financial help when sick and financial aid when needing to bury deceased members. • Zulus made a distinct impression on Mardi Gras crowds in 1909 by being totally different. They wore raggedy pants and had a quartet singing in front and behind their king. The king wore a “lard can” crown and carried a “banana stalk” scepter.• Another difference with the Zulu Parade is their unusual throws. Possibly as early as 1910, the krewe made their mark by throwing coconuts, known as “Golden Nuggets.” In the early years the coconuts were in their natural “hairy” state, but a few years later, the krewe started handing out beautiful painted and decorated coconuts.• In 1988, the Louisiana Legislature passed a law dubbed the “Coconut Bill” that excluded the coconut from liability for injuries arising from the Zulus handing out coconuts in their parades. • Louisiana is the only state where Mardi Gras is a legal holiday.

HowcanIprotectmychild’soralhealth?

A proper regimen of preventive home care is important from the day your child is born. Parents should provide oral hygiene care until the child is old enough for the daily routine of brushing and flossing. Clean your infant’s gums with a clean, damp cloth after each feeding.

As soon as the first teeth come in, brush them with a small, soft-bristled toothbrush and water. To avoid baby bottle tooth decay and teeth misalignment, wean your child off the bottle or breast by one year of age, and monitor excessive sucking of pacifiers, fingers and thumbs. Never give your child a bottle of milk, juice or sweetened liquid as a pacifier at naptime or bedtime.

Help a young child brush at night, the most important time to brush, due to lower salivary flow and higher susceptibility to cavities. Let the child have fun brushing their teeth first, then the parent can follow up to ensure that all plaque is removed.

The best way to teach a child how to brush is to lead by good example. Allowing your child to watch you brush your teeth teaches the importance of good oral hygiene.

Explore the World of Inter-national Investments

You’re probably accustomed to measuring the progress of your investments, and the overall con-dition of the investment world, by checking on indexes such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500. And since these types of benchmarks focus almost

exclusively on American companies, you might get the idea that the best investments are located right here in the United States. But that impression would be false — be-cause there are, literally, a world of investment opportu-nities beyond the U.S. borders.

In fact, as of the end of 2010, U.S. stock markets con-stituted less than a third of the total global stock market value, according to the World Bank. And you can prob-ably just look around at the products you use in your daily life to identify many successful foreign companies.

Why invest a portion of your portfolio internationally? Here are a couple of reasons to consider:

Growth potential — The United States is a mature, highly developed economy. That doesn’t mean, of course, that we have no “upside” here. However, you can also find considerable growth potential in emerging markets — countries such as China, India, Brazil and Mexico that are characterized by younger, less mature economies. Diversification — The world’s financial markets are somewhat dependent on one another, but that doesn’t mean they constantly move in unison. In any given year, the U.S. markets may be down, but international markets might be doing better. Consequently, if during that year, you had invested only in U.S. companies, your portfo-lio may have taken a hit. It’s important to diversify your portfolio by investing in many different vehicles, but you can also boost your diversification through geography. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t guaran-tee a profit or protect against loss.)

While international investing can be beneficial, it does not come without risks. For one thing, when you invest overseas, you may encounter political instability, which could threaten the financial markets of a country or re-gion. Conversely, financial problems, such as the Europe-an debt crisis, can result in loss of confidence in individ-ual governments. Also, you might experience currency risk, which means that changes in the value of the U.S. dollar relative to foreign currencies could harm the value of your investments. And in any given year, any market, foreign or domestic, may be down.

Ultimately, you should probably limit your exposure to international investments to no more than 20% to 25% of your overall portfolio, with the exact amount, if any, depending on your situation — your goals, risk toler-ance, time horizon, financial situation and other factors. You may also want add an international flavor to your portfolio by investing in quality U.S. companies that do a considerable amount of business abroad. In any case, given the more complex nature of international investing, you’ll want to consult with a financial professional before writing a check.

Still, consider the international investment world. With a little exploring, you may discover some good possibili-ties out there.

A Little Help From Your Friends At Stroke Of Genius Painting

A quick and easy tip for your Do It Yourself painting projects.

Prior to painting using a nylon latex paintbrush, make sure to rinse your brush with warm water. Take the brush by the handle and put it between both of your hands (your hands should be in a praying type position with the bristles pointing away from you) and spin the brush to rid it of any excess water. This should leave the brush’s bristles damp but not sopping wet. Comb the brush using a wire brush or your hands to even out the bristles and repeat this process upon finishing your painting project. Use water for water-based paints and mineral spirits or paint thinner for oil-based paints. This will keep your brushes conditioned and make all of your painting projects more professional and easy to perform!

Give Stroke Of Genius Painting a call at 303.956.5022 should you need help with any of your projects around the house as we would be glad to help!

On Feb. 27, 1860, Abraham Lincoln poses for the first of sev-eral portraits by noted Civil War-era photographer Mathew Brady. A relatively new art form, the photograph (or daguerreo-type) showed a beardless Lincoln just moments before the fu-ture president’s historic speech at Cooper Union in New York City.

On March 3, 1887, Anne Sullivan begins teaching 6-year-old Helen Keller, who lost her sight and hearing after a severe ill-ness at age 19 months. Under Sullivan’s tutelage, Keller flour-ished, eventually graduating from college and becoming an international lecturer and activist.

On March 2, 1904, Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, the author and illustrator of children’s books, is born in Spring-field, Mass. Geisel’s first book, “And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street” (1937), was rejected by dozens of publishers.

On March 1, 1932, Charles Lindbergh III, the 20-month-old son of aviation hero Charles Lindbergh, is kidnapped from the family’s new mansion in Hopewell, N.J. Days later, the baby’s body was discovered near the Lindbergh home.

On Feb. 28, 1940, Mario Andretti, whose name will become synonymous with American auto racing, is born in Montona, Italy. He officially retired from racing in 1994 as the only driver to ever win the Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500 and a Formula One championship.

On March 4, 1966, a John Lennon quotation that was ignored in England set off a media frenzy in America: “We’re more popular than Jesus now.” Bible Belt disc jockeys declared Len-non’s remarks blasphemous and vowed an eternal ban on all Beatles music.

On Feb. 29, 1980, the iconic glasses worn by rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Buddy Holly, lost since his death in a plane crash in 1959, are found in Mason City, Iowa. The plane wreckage was strewn across snow-covered cornfields, and the glasses weren’t found until the snow melted in the spring. They were given to the Cerro Gordo County SheriffÕs office, where they sat filed away for the next 21 years in a sealed envelope.

BLONDE HUMOR

Two blondes were going to Disneyland. They were driving on the Interstate when they saw the sign that said Disneyland LEFT. They started crying and turned around and went home.

FLORIDA OR MOON

Two blondes living in Oklahoma were sitting on a bench talking, and one blonde says to the other, 'Which do you think is farther away... Florida or the moon?'

The other blonde turns and says 'Helloooooooooo, can you see Florida ?????'

CAR TROUBLE

A blonde pushes her BMW into a gas station. She tells the mechanic it died. After he works on it for a few minutes, it is idling smoothly.

She says, 'What's the story?'

He replies, 'Just crap in the carburettor'

She asks, 'How often do I have to do that?'

SPEEDING TICKET

A police officer stops a blonde for speeding and asks her very nicely if he could see her licence.

She replied in a huff, 'I wish you guys would get your act together. Just yesterday you take away my license and then today you expect me to show it to you!'

RIVER WALK

There's this blonde out for a walk. She comes to a river and sees another blonde on the opposite bank 'Yoo-hoo!' she shouts, 'How can I get to the other side?'

The second blonde looks up the river then down the river and shouts back, 'You ARE on the other side.'

AT THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE

A gorgeous young redhead goes into the doctor's office and said that her body hurt wherever she touched it.

'Impossible!' says the doctor.. 'Show me.'

The redhead took her finger, pushed on her left shoulder and screamed, then she pushed her el-bow and screamed even more. She pushed her knee and screamed; likewise she pushed her ankle and screamed. Everywhere she touched made her scream.

The doctor said, 'You're not really a redhead, are you?

'Well, no' she said, 'I'm actually a blonde.'

'I thought so,' the doctor said, 'Your finger is bro-ken.'
