In 1986 SeniorNet was born in the USA after a research project in San Francisco discovered a need for small group, ‘Peer Group computer training at your own pace’ for over 50’s. It was brought to New Zealand and there are now approximately ninety centres around the country, as part of a New Zealand Federation of SeniorNet Centres. Membership of the group also brings other benefits eg: discounts for purchases of cars, PCs and accessories, along with other offers from time to time. SeniorNet is a non-profit organisation. Tutors are all

unpaid volunteers and are all the same Age Group as the course/workshop delegates. People now over fifty are much more computer-savvy than those in 1992, when SeniorNet started in New Zealand, but there is still the need for sympathetically paced tuition in small groups (maximum of six with one or two tutors) arranged in short (single topic) Workshops (two hours) or longer two or four week courses of two hours per session. In 2013, the separate SeniorNet centres of Leeston, Lincoln and Rolleston were brought together under a Selwyn District Council

initiative into a Selwyn group, plus a new centre began at Darfield. The Selwyn Group is affiliated to the national Federation. The Selwyn Group has some financial backing from the District Council including free usage of Council facilities, subsid ised course fees, equipment supply and the significant advantage of sharing the scarce resource of tutors and expertise from amongst the l o c a l v o l u n t e e r s a n d Christchurch Canterbury centre. Courses and Workshops: A range o f courses and workshops are available at the different centres purposely arranged to be on different days. Both Microsoft Windows and Macintosh (Apple) based systems are taught and iPad, Android Tablets and Smart Phones, have been added to the traditional subjects - Windows 7, 8.1, and 10, Word, E-Mails, Excel, Skype, Trade Me, Digital Picture Downloading, Vinyl to CD, etc. This term’s activities start on February 15th and full details of times and contacts can be found by searching for Senior Net on the Selwyn Distr ict Counc i l website: www.selwyn.govt.nz

A look at the ‘A Twisted Bunch’ website clearly shows the passion and design skill Alanah possesses, as well as the wide variety of styles and colours she’s able to accommodate and create. “I have been freelancing doing wedd ings , ev en t s , and corporate flowers in and around Christchurch for around six years,” Alanah commented, “and now it’s something I can also offer locally.” “I moved to Springfield eighteen months ago with my partner Harley Ashwell Harley Ashwell Harley Ashwell Harley Ashwell (a well known Darfield local and son of iconic columnist ‘Mac’), we are in the process of transforming a really large section into a picking garden for my work and shop,” Alanah said. “I have planted unique flowers and foliage that are not freely available in the domestic flower market; things that are currently in fashion abroad and often seen in wedding shots on social media. Brides ask for them but we just cant get!” While Alanah plans to support local growers where she can she will also source from other parts of New Zealand thereby of fer ing var iety to her customers. “I am inspired by nature and love to forage for things like moss, berries, seed pods and interesting branches to add texture and uniqueness to my design work.” Alanah plans to offer various workshops including lush hand-tieds, floral crowns, table arrangements, wreaths, themed arrangements Christmas/Easter etc, wrist corsages for school formals or children's fairy

gardens for a little fun in the school holidays. She’s keen to hand on her passion for floristry to others who want to learn. As well there will be the option of t u t o r ag e i n a d v an c ed floristry design elements and principles for those more serous about floristry and maybe looking at taking it up as a career. “I t has been a huge undertaking setting up the shop and my friends and family have been amazing - I couldn't have done it without them! I have sanded my hands dry and inhaled more varnish fumes than I would like to dwell on,” Alanah added with a laugh. At the same time as the new shop renovation has been undertaken Alanah has also been extremely busy working on both local and city wedding requirements. This is something she particularly loves to do - creating bespoke wedding flowers for brides with a dream. The new Darfield shop will offer all aspects of floristry including, but not limited to, wedding bouquets, reception flowers, cake flowers, full set up at venues, corporate arrangements, functions and events, plus funerals, bouquets for all occasions, gift baskets, house plants and terrariums. Alanah can also arrange for deliveries to be undertaken throughout Selwyn, Waimakarir i and Christchurch. Beautiful flowers and plants will be complemented in the new shop with stocks of New Zealand made gifts and cards, ensuring Valentine’s Day is well and truly covered with something to suit everyone. “I will have lots of red, as well

as a r ange o f o t he r coloured, roses for Valentine’s and these will be available in single stems, or half and full dozens. As well I will also have beautiful, lush, bouquets hand crafted for your Valentine. Beautiful flowers will keep you in the good books for ages guys, so don't forget her this Valentine’s and pre order so you don't miss out,” Alanah concluded with a smile.

"But why?" asked

Mike.

"I'm a divorce

replied.

People in Selwyn will be able to hone their hip-hop skills at a series of workshops and performances taking place in February. Three South island tutors and two dance crews are bringing their creative passion for hip-hop and breakdancing to Darfield on February 13th and to Rolleston on February 20th. The line-up includes ten year-old Manaia Davies Manaia Davies Manaia Davies Manaia Davies from Glentunnel, who will be running a hip-hop workshop for beginners; Kbigs Kbigs Kbigs Kbigs who will lead a breakdancing workshop, and Elly Hanssen Elly Hanssen Elly Hanssen Elly Hanssen who will facilitate an intermediate to advanced, hip-hop workshop. Dance crews Swarm and Reality, along with Kbigs and Manaia, will put on a free public performance at the conclusion of each workshop. The workshops were initiated after Manaia, supported by her mother YeraneYeraneYeraneYerane, applied to Creative New Zealand for funding to hold the event. The workshops are also supported by the Selwyn Arts Trust. Creative Communities Fund Administrator, Stuart Westoby Stuart Westoby Stuart Westoby Stuart Westoby commented that this is a great opportunity to support those

who are passionate about dance in Selwyn. “It is projects like this that the Creative Communities Fund was set up for, as it supports local art activities and performers within the Selwyn District,” he said. Manaia’s passion for dance, singing and drama is clearly obvious and she has won a variety of awards both in New Zealand and Australia. “I love hip-hop because I instantly feel a connection with the movement and the music. I love teaching hip-hop (Manaia tutors beginners hip hop at Springfield) so I can share this passion with others,” Manaia enthused. “People love hip hop because it has a high profile and is seen performed by artists and in video clips everywhere. I know that New Zealand is special as it boasts some of the best hip hop dancers and choreographers in the world.”

There was excitement, colour and smiles aplenty at Annabel’s Educare last Friday, January 29th. This was all in response to the beautiful mural, reflecting the local environment and painted by talented Darfield artist, Blake DixonBlake DixonBlake DixonBlake Dixon. It was so well done in fact, that from some angles it was a struggle to recognise the wavy lines of the corrugated iron fence that was the canvas for the piece. The children and parents of Annabel’s Educare conceived the idea of a mural to brighten up the play area around six months ago. Since then, everyone has been buzzing with suggestions about what should adorn the fence. The decision was made to search out and put forward pieces of art that represent Darfield and the surrounding area. The children had a great deal of input into the content of the mural and were mesmerised to see it coming to fruition in such a spectacular way. Blake captured the local vibe magnificently with the inclusion of mountains, river, trees, flax and a tractor. The children offered Blake no end of encouragement while he was busy working with comments such as, “well done Blake, you’re doing a great job”; and p r o v i d i n g m o t i v a t i o n throughout. Blake, 19, is a second year Art student and is clearly both pass iona te and g i f t ed . Annabel’s area manager, Ceri Ceri Ceri Ceri Foote Foote Foote Foote revealed that Blake had been a student at both Educare and Kindergarten. She beamed proudly when describing; “even at an early age, drawing and art were a huge interest for Blake and his talent was clearly

evident.” This made Blake the obvious choice to take on the task at hand and now the accomplishments of a past student are on display for all the children to see. Surprisingly, this is only Blake’s

second commissioned piece and he accomplished this huge undertaking in one day. “We are looking forward to seeing much more in the future from this young artist,” Ceri concluded.

Artist Blake Dixon, with teacher Katie Payton and the very excited children from Annabel’s Educare.

Karen Benton comparing the two flag options.

When Sheffield’s Stuart Wright Stuart Wright Stuart Wright Stuart Wright approached the Sheffield W a d d i n g t o n T o w n s h i p Committee with his suggestion of flying the current New Zealand Flag, alongside the proposed replacement, he knew there would be much debate and even possibly some opposition - he was right (pardon the pun!). After much discussion, and a majority decision by Township Committee members, both flags were raised on Monday evening, at the Sheffield war memorial. The war memorial is visible from State Highway 73, as well as from within the township. “We felt this move would generate consciousness and discussion,” said Township Committee chair, Val MacKenzieVal MacKenzieVal MacKenzieVal MacKenzie. “Definitely no one is trying to influence anyone’s decision, but it may serve to remind people to cast their vote, when the time comes.

“Most war memorials in the area have two flagpoles and in the interest of casting an informed vote maybe it would be beneficial for each township to follow Sheffield’s lead. “The proposed flag will of course be removed and

The companion volume to the White Cliffs Branch Railway released in 2015, has now been published, as promised, by its authors, brothers RichardRichardRichardRichard and Bruce MaffeyBruce MaffeyBruce MaffeyBruce Maffey. In a high level of detail, the book examines the importance of the discovery of m inera ls and supposed economic wealth contained in the Malvern Hills from the 1850s. “The book is subtitled ‘Great

Hope of the Canterbury Province’ for good reason”, said Richard. “It was imagined that the discoveries might bring a new source of wealth to a province struggling with failing returns from the pastoral economy. The growth of industries such as coal mining and pottery works were directly related to the branch railway from Darfield to White Cliffs and this is a fascinating study of the more significant contributors to that period in

our local history.” Much of the information will be new to readers and many will have had relations who were employed in those industries. The long anticipated ’Industries of the Malvern Hills’ will be launched on Waitangi Day at 10am at the Whitecliffs Railway Station on Tarling Common, Whitecliffs and will be available for purchase also, at that time.

On Sunday, February 21st, Sheffield Sharks Rugby Club will create an opportunity for avid mountain bikers, to take part in a challenging, but picturesque ride through Canterbury farmland. The Sheffield Rugby Club, established in 1896, has a long and proud history in the community, event organiser Tom FergusonTom FergusonTom FergusonTom Ferguson, explained, “in recent years, the club’s focus has remained on their junior players and so the necessity for fundraising is ever present. It is important for us to foster these players and to help keep our tradition alive.” Tom is excited to give the public a rare opportunity to ride over some o f the exqu is i te countryside that the area has to offer. Racing through this exclusive route has been made possible by DaveDaveDaveDave and Nicola Nicola Nicola Nicola Stokes Stokes Stokes Stokes of Wyndale and ReeceReeceReeceReece and Mel Cleland Mel Cleland Mel Cleland Mel Cleland of Annavale, who will generously open their private farms for the event. The

course passes through three private properties in total (the third one belonging to the event organiser and his family), giving bikers plenty of terrain to conquer throughout the day. “This is a 25 kilometre race for the young and the young at heart,” Tom said. “Riding through paddocks, 4WD tracks, and weaving through tussock country. There are a couple of steep short climbs, rewarded by fantastic views of the Canterbury Plains and balanced with invigorating descents!” The race is certain to test the skil ls and endurance of participants, with the estimated fastest time being one hour twenty, from start to finish. Entrants who possess the most stamina and speed will be richly rewarded with cash prizes for placings, but there are numerous spot prizes too. Also up for grabs is a $300 R80 rugby store voucher for the winner of the rugby section (wearing his or her local Club rugby jersey) - this to go to

their local junior rugby club. This prize also comes with extensive bragging rights too! Being a local rugby dad, Matt Matt Matt Matt Collier Collier Collier Collier from Farmlands Real Estate understands the importance of keeping the team game alive for the younger generation and has not only signed up as a major sponsor, but has also donated time, energy and resources to the event. Organisers are extremely apprec iat ive of al l the sponsorship and support they have received from locals and businesses enabling them to stage such an event and offer a huge array of prizes. Th is inaugura l race is guaranteed to be a fabulous day out for all the family with a barbecue, bouncy castle and refreshments available for the children, as well as something stronger for those that have earned it!

The first two cricket ing weekends in the new year witnessed the inaugural Canterbury Country combined T20 competition, where both Malvern teams were crowned champions. Greendale scored a low total of 95-9 against Oxford, all the batsmen struggling to find form after the Christmas break. Mike Millar Mike Millar Mike Millar Mike Millar returned figures of 4-10 from his four overs for Greendale in what was probably the match winning spell, but the game never really got going until the last over, Oxford needed ten runs to win. Ex Canterbury batsman Brad Doody Brad Doody Brad Doody Brad Doody hit a six off the first ball putting all the pressure on bowler Jeremy Jeremy Jeremy Jeremy Clayton Clayton Clayton Clayton who responded with five consecutive dot balls to bring his team home by three runs Weedons arrived and Greendale were now in the mood for scoring runs. Nick Jenkins Nick Jenkins Nick Jenkins Nick Jenkins (45)

and Blair Chapman Blair Chapman Blair Chapman Blair Chapman (114* off 45 balls) blazed their way to a 100 run opening partnership setting up a total of 209-3. Weedons gave the run chase their best shot but when Sean Sean Sean Sean Carston Carston Carston Carston dismissed stroke makers Lachie Stove Lachie Stove Lachie Stove Lachie Stove (56) and Sam Wilson Sam Wilson Sam Wilson Sam Wilson (45) in the same over, the game was all but over. Greendale won by 56 runs. South Malvern produced the innings of the tournament against Southbridge-Leeston ticking up a massive 275-3 off their twenty overs. James Ferris James Ferris James Ferris James Ferris (52) was in his element but it was the big hitting Jarred Kars Jarred Kars Jarred Kars Jarred Kars who stared scoring 106* hitting eleven 6's and just three 4's. Bodie Hawkins Bodie Hawkins Bodie Hawkins Bodie Hawkins joined the party score in his maiden half century. Southbridge-Leeston were never going to get close and were all out for 95. Kyle Innes Kyle Innes Kyle Innes Kyle Innes was the pick of the bowlers with

3-13. Sefton proved a much stiffer opponent. Ferris (60) was in the runs again and Paddy Paddy Paddy Paddy Reardon Reardon Reardon Reardon (29) home from a stint in the Dutch premier league got their team to 156-7. Mike McCaughan Mike McCaughan Mike McCaughan Mike McCaughan 2-26 knocked over the top order putting Sefton on the back foot. M a l v e r n N e t b a l l ’ s We dnesday e ve n i ng summer competition is due to start mid-February. Games will continue until early April at the Darfield Netball Courts and interest in the venture has been high. Teams can be mixed, with the inclusion of up to three males per team. It is a fun, social competition, but as in any sport, expect a degree of competitiveness! The Centre would like to encourage more high school aged players into the competition and in doing so have sourced funding to reduce their subs to only $10 per person for the whole summer competition. Many players and teams use this social, fun, summer competition as their pre-season training. Malvern Netball will hold their AGM in March before the winter competition begins at the end of April.

Holidays Are Over - The summer holiday was over

and young Jack returned to school. Only two days

later his teacher phoned his mother to tell her that

Jack was misbehaving.

“Wait a minute,” mother said. “I had Jack with me for

six weeks and I never called you once when he

misbehaved.”

School Learning - Nathan comes home from his first

day at school. Mother asks, 'What did you learn

today?'

He replies, 'Not enough. I have to go back tomorrow.'

New Teacher? - Mia: I think we need a new teacher.

Mum: Why is that?

Mia: Our teacher doesn't know anything, she keeps

asking us for the answers.
