TIDBITS® SAYS --
IT HAPPENED ONE APRILby Kathy Wolfe
April has been a busy time over the years! Follow along as Tidbits takes a look at some of the interesting events that have taken place during this fourth month of the Gregorian calendar.• Noah Webster was 70 years old when he copyrighted the first edition of his 70,000-entry “American Diction-ary of the English Language” in April of 1828. Although we’ve depended on Webster’s dictionary all our lives, his first edition sold only 2,500 copies. When it came time to issue the second edition, Webster mortgaged his home in order to finance it, and he lived in debt the re-mainder of his days. • In April of 1973, Martin Cooper stood on the streets of New York City and did something no one had ever done before. He placed a call from a portable cellular phone! Cooper, the general manager of Motorola’s Communications Division, called his competitor at AT&T labs using a 30-ounce (850-g) brick-like phone. Compare this with today’s phone at about 3 ounces (85 g). The process of bringing portable cell phones to the consumer market took 10 years, and Motorola intro-duced their 16-ounce (453-g) DynaTAC phone in 1983, carrying a price tag of $3,500.

APRIL EVENTS (continued):• April has been an eventful month in the world of baseball. In April of 1912, Detroit’s Tiger Sta-dium and Boston’s Fenway Park both opened on the same day. Eleven years later, Yankee Stadium had its opening day in April. New York Mets’ Shea Stadium was inaugurated in April of 1964. It was an especially memorable occasion when the world’s first domed sports stadium opened in April of 1965. Houston’s Astrodome was built at a cost of $37 mil-lion and included a sophisticated air conditioning system to deal with Texas’ July and August average temperatures of 97 degrees. Opening night enter-tainment at the Astrodome included performances by Judy Garland and The Supremes. The Astros were up against the New York Yankees in an exhibi-tion game, and Mickey Mantle hit the first home run in the Astrodome off Houston pitcher Turk Farrell. • The Titanic departed from the port at Southamp-ton, England, on April 10, 1912, bound for New York City. The ship set sail with 2,227 passengers on board and lifeboats for only 1,178 of those peo-ple. In the wee hours of the morning on April 15, two and a half hours after striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic, the Titanic sank, taking 1,517 peo-ple to their deaths. • You’ve probably never heard of Harriet Quimby, but she’s quite famous in her own right. Quimby was the first woman to earn a pilot’s license in the United States and less than a year later, became the first woman to fly across the English Channel. In April of 1912, she took off from Dover, England, and landed on a French beach 59 minutes later. Un-fortunately, her amazing feat didn’t get much cover-age in the newspapers, as the tragic sinking of the Titanic had taken place the day before. • April has been a big month for space adventures. In April of 1961, Soviet Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel into space aboard Vostok I, edg-ing out American Alan Shepard by a mere 23 days. Apollo 13 blasted off on April 11, 1970, command-ed by James A. Lovell Jr. and scheduled as the third space mission to land on the moon. Two days later, an oxygen tank aboard the craft exploded, placing the crew in grave danger. They returned safely on April 17. Apollo 16 made an April 1972 flight to the moon, under the command of John Young. The first launch of the space shuttle Columbia also occurred in April, in 1981, and in 1990, the shuttle Discovery headed into space carrying the $1.5 billion Hubble Telescope.
• Earth Day was first observed in April of 1970, with 20 million participants. It was the brainstorm of U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, who came up with the idea after touring a disastrous oil spill in the Santa Barbara, California, area. In his

Mosquitoes Bring Heartworm Season – Prevention is Key!
Please call 303.663.2287 (CATS) for more information or visit www.catspecialist.com
Cats and dogs can be infected with heartworm disease by the bite from a carrier mosquito. The coyote has become the ‘natural’ reservoir for the disease. Dogs are the primary host for the disease, but cats and other animals can become infected, and the consequences are serious. Indoor cats are just as susceptible as outdoor cats!
The good news is that this disease can be prevented. There is no effective treatment once your cat is infected, so prevention is the key. A safe, monthly topical medication is the best way to protect your cat(s). If you have questions please call our hospital.

Do You Take Vitamins? Why?
I have asked many friends, colleagues, and clients if they take vitamins and why? Most people have told me that do and for many good reasons. Vitamins and supplements appear to correct deficiencies in the body and enhance people’s well being.
Next I began to look over feline diets and most diets were labeled balanced and complete for all life stages. The ingredients varied but most had a large percentage of carbohydrates as a food source. Cats in the wild eat very little carbohydrates – cats are meat eaters. The metabolism of felines differs dramatically from canines – cats are true carnivores and dogs are omnivores like humans.
In clinical medicine we see many ‘mild’ deficiency syndromes improve when diets are changed or supplements are added. It is apparent that most diets other than mice and birds are deficient in many ways. Reviewing thousands of cat’s body scores and their diets we found most had some deficiencies. The old adage – “You are what you eat.” is more true for cats than for humans. There are many ‘new’ feline diseases that have come to the forefront in the last 30 years that appear to have some dietary basis: diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, urinary tract disease, cancer, liver disease, kidney disease, heart disease, etc.. Deficiency diseases are becoming one of the biggest areas of research.
So, the bottom line with virtually all feline diets . . . they need to be supplemented with quality vitamins, minerals, and other essential fatty acids and proteins. The problem with most vitamin and supplement products is that they are not well formulated for cats and the quality is subpar. We have researched and searched for quality products and there appear to be only 3 to 4 out of thousands that meet balanced nutritional standards. Feeding quality supplements really does help your cat versus feeding ‘empty’ treats loaded with calories. Ask your veterinarian which supplements to add to your cat’s nutrition.

Now that we have introduced ourselves we would like to inform you over the next weeks on preventative care that is near and dear to our hearts and hopefully yours:
Leptospirosis
One of the vaccines that we strongly recommend our canine companions get is the Leptospirosis vaccine, or Lepto for short. Leptospirosis is a bacterium that is carried by wild animals; common carriers are skunks, rodents, raccoons, foxes, and coyotes. The bacterium is frequently localized in the kidneys or in the reproductive organs and is shed in the urine. Dogs pick up Lepto when they sniff the urine of an infected animal and the bacterium comes in contact with mucous membranes where it enters the blood stream and rapidly multiplies. The main reason we strongly recommend the Lepto vaccine is that not only are we protecting our dogs, but also we are protecting ourselves because Leptospirosis is zoonotic (meaning it can be transferred to humans). Typically Leptospirosis can cause liver and kidney failure in dogs and potentially cause multiple organ failure and death in humans. For these reasons Leptospirosis is an invaluable piece to our canine companions vaccine protocol. Please contact us if you are interested in more information or in obtaining the vaccine.

Can my dog really get heartworm disease in Colorado?
Do we have heartworms and fleas in Colorado? Yes, we do. When I moved here from Virginia in 1980, I was told that you do not have to worry about fleas and heartworm disease in Colorado as it is too dry a climate. This is not the case now. We have heartworm positive cases of native Colorado dogs and cats, and the wildlife (rabbits, foxes, prairie dogs, and deer) in Colorado are infested with fleas and ticks. Dogs, cats, and humans who have contact with the flea and tick infested pets can also become bitten and are susceptible to many of the diseases transmitted by these vectors.
Heartworm disease has spread throughout the U.S. in the last 100 years. More dogs and cats are at risk of infection. Environmental and climatic factors (increased temperatures and higher humidity) influence the presence of mosquitoes and the transmission of heartworm disease. It has become more difficult to predict when mosquito season starts and stops in Colorado. For this reason, the American Heartworm Society recommends year-around administration of an approved heartworm preventative and annual testing for heartworm disease.
Heartworm disease is transmitted by several species of mosquitoes. Mosquitoes act as an intermediate host for the heartworm parasite, Dirofilaria immitis. Microfilaria develop into infective third stage larvae (L3) in the mosquito. When the mosquito bites a pet, the L3 leave the mosquito and enter into the pet. A heartworm preventative administered to your pet within 1 month of infection can be greater than 99% effective in preventing heartworm disease. Heartworm disease can cause severe heart and lung disease, can shorten a pet’s lifespan, and can result in death.
The primary prevention of heartworm disease is to administer a monthly preventative such as ivermectin, milbemycin oxime, moxidectin, or selamectin. A simple blood test can determine if your dog or cat is infected with microfilaria or adult heartworms. Anywhere a mosquito can go, a dog or cat can be bitten and infected. Administration of a heartworm preventative year-around will minimize the risk of heartworm disease.
Many of the heartworm preventatives also provide protection against roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and/or tapeworms. Ask your veterinarian which heartworm preventative is suitable for your pet’s lifestyle. Flea and tick prevention coupled with the internal parasite control can provide maximum protection for your pets.
For additional information on heartworm disease from the American Heartworm Society, contact www.heartwormsociety.org.

Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666
Zoisite is named after the Slovene scientist Baron Sigmund Zois von Edelstein. He was the first to realize that this mineral, first discovered in the Saualpe Mountains, a rolling mountain range in the Alps, could be fashioned into gemstones and other forms. Zoisite is often carved, used for jewelry, usually in relatively large pieces, also spheres, eggs, hearts, pyramids, and even palm stones. The green and pink zoisites have been used as jade substitutes. Tanzanite, a form of zoisite, is widely used as a gemstone. At least until after the September 11, 2001 attacks when a rumor was circulated throughout the gemstone marketplace that sales of tanza-nite had helped fund Osam bin Laden and the Al-Quaeda network. As a result, several jewelers, especially in the United States, imposed a boycott on further imports of the gem, and some of them even removed tanzanite-bearing jewelry from their active inventories. Eventually the U.S. State Department declared that there was no evidence to support the rumor so most jewelers lifted the boycott.

words, “It had been troubling me that the state of our environment was simply a non-issue in the politics of the country.”
• The press dubbed it “The Wedding the Century” when actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III of Monaco in April of 1956. Thirty-six seamstresses worked on the 26-year-old Kelly’s wedding dress for six weeks in preparation for the nuptials. She had met the prince the previous April while doing a photo shoot in connection with the Cannes Film Fes-tival. After eight months of correspondence, Rainier traveled to America, met the Kelly family, and three days later, he proposed. Her family was required to provide a dowry of $2 million to him before mar-riage plans were to proceed. Six hundred guests at-tended the wedding, and the royal couple departed that evening for a seven-week Mediterranean honey-
moon cruise aboard the prince’s yacht. • Lots of folks don’t have to stop to ask for direc-tions thanks to the efforts of Rand McNally. In April of 1924, the company published its first road atlas, although they had been publishing maps and geogra-phy textbooks for years. The company was founded by William Rand and Andrew McNally in 1868 and became the first major mapmaker to use a system of numbered highways. • April has had its share of tragedies. In 1995, the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed by Timothy McVeigh. In 1999, Colora-do’s Columbine High School shootings occurred. It was also the month of the assassinations of President Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. The devastating nuclear accident at the Soviet Union’s Chernobyl plant also took place in April.
• Twenty-seven-year-old James Cash Penney head-ed out to Wyoming in 1902, and on April 13 of that year in the community of Kemmerer, he opened his first dry goods and clothing store called The Golden Rule. He chose the name because it was his phi-losophy to treat others the way he would like to be treated. In his free time, Penney worked as a lum-berjack felling trees. Ten years later, his chain of stores had grown to 34 stores, and he incorporated them all as the J.C. Penney Company. By 1924, he was generating an income upwards of $1.5 million a year. Today, the company operates over 1,100 stores with 150,000 employees and sales approaching $18 billion annually. And that little store in Kemmerer? Still there, operating on a daily basis.
OVERCOMING THE ODDS:
SCOTT HAMILTONIt’s tough enough to become an Olympic champion under the best of circumstances, but figure skater Scott Hamilton has had more than his fair share of hardships. Let’s see what makes Hamilton a true vic-tor.• At the age of two, Ohio-born Scott Hamilton contracted an illness that caused him to inexplicably stop growing. Extensive tests followed, as did wrong diagnoses. One physician diagnosed cystic fibrosis and gave the toddler six months to live. A trip to the Boston Children’s Hospital resulted in a special diet and exercise plan, and miraculously, the disorder corrected itself. However, the end result was that Hamilton’s stature remained small at just over 5 feet, 2 inches (1.6 m) and 108 pounds (49 kg). • After watching his older sister at an ice rink, Ham-ilton became interested in skating. At age 13, he be-gan training for national competition with former French Olympic champion Pierre Brunet, winner of three Olympic medals. In order to meet the expenses of Hamilton’s training, his mother, a second grade teacher, returned to school to become a college pro-fessor. Another obstacle hit the Hamilton family’s path when Mrs. Hamilton was diagnosed with breast cancer. When she was forced to quit work, the money for Hamilton’s training stopped, and as a high school senior, he faced having to quit skating. When anony-mous benefactors stepped forward with the offer to finance his training, he was able to continue. • Cancer claimed the life of Hamilton’s mother in 1977 when he was 19, and he vowed to make her proud. When he earned third place in the 1980 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, he earned a spot on the Olympic team. At the Olympics in Lake Placid that year, he proudly carried the American flag in the opening ceremony and went on to finish in fifth place. The next year he took the gold in the World Figure Skating Championships, a feat he repeated for the following three years. In 1984, he was the gold medalist at the Olympics in Sarajevo, after which he turned professional.

Forest Fires: What You Can Do To Help
Protect Your HouseAs we enter the dry fire season, it’s good to know what you can do to help protect your house if a fire does start in your area. Not to mention, most of these measures are easy to do while you’re out doing the spring yard work. Step 1-Start by estimating the height of the trees and shrubs around your home. Flames can get as tall as two and a half times the height of the trees, brush and other things that are burning. For example, If you have trees that are 25 feet tall, then you should look at clearing out trees and brush within 75 feet of your home. If your property line doesn’t allow for that, then clear out the immediate area surrounding your house.
Step 2- As you clear out the trees and brush, keep an eye out for other potential forest fire fuel. Look under decks for piles of dead leafs, pine needles and branches. This items don’t take much to ignite and can burn fast. Also, try to not stack firewood close to the house. It’s easy to stack it next to the house for convenience but if a fire comes, it’s a big pile of fire fuel.
Step 3- If you have a wood shake roof, look at replacing it with something less flammable. This one is a little more expensive and isn’t just a weekend job for most people. But if the opportunity arises and you have the option to replace the roof, select a different material that won’t leave your house covered in
dried-out, fire fuel. Most insurance companies will even lower your rate once the roof is replaced.
Step 4- If a fire does start in your area, start watering down your house and surrounding property. Do this as long as you can until the authorities instruct you to evacuate. Once they tell you to evacuate, leave the area. Do not risk your life. Insurance covers fire and will replace your home and belongings.

Mortgage Decisions Can Make a Big Difference in
Achieving Financial Goals If you’re purchasing a new home or refinancing your existing one, you’ve got some mortgage-related decisions to consider. And since your mortgage may well be the big-gest financial transaction you ever make — and one that can affect
your long-term financial goals, such as retirement — you’ll want to weigh your options carefully.
What types of choices might you face? Here are some of the most important ones:
Fixed or adjustable? With a fixed-rate mortgage, your payment will remain the same throughout the life of your loan. However, if interest rates drop significantly below your mortgage rate, you may then be paying too much for your loan and will have to go through the time, effort and expense of refinancing. With an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM), your initial rate is likely quite low, so you can af-ford a bigger mortgage. This could be an advantage if you know your income will be rising or you are confident you’ll sell your house within the next five years. However, your ARM payment and interest rate can rise substantially, even with caps in place, and these adjustments can affect your cash flow. So, before taking out an ARM, make sure you understand the terms involved and how they will affect you down the road. 15-year or 30-year? These aren’t the only mortgage lengths available, but they are among the most common. The advantage of a 15-year mortgage is that you’ll pay it off quicker and, in the process, potentially save thousands of dollars in interest. The disadvantage, of course, is that you’ll likely need to come up with much bigger monthly payments than if you took out a 30-year mortgage. And since your mortgage payments will be lower with a 30-year loan, you’ll have more money available each month to in-vest for the future.Over time, these extra investments can really add up. Sup-pose, for example, that you invested $100 a month to a tax-deferred vehicle, such as a traditional IRA, that earned a hypothetical 7% average annual return. After 30 years, you’d end up with a little more than $117,000, before you started paying taxes on withdrawals. But if your 30-year mortgage freed up enough cash for you to contribute $300 a month to that same IRA, earning that same 7% average annual return, you’d accumulate more than $350,000 after 30 years, before taxes . That’s a big difference — and the extra money could perk up your retirement lifestyle consid-erably. Keep in mind, of course, that these examples don’t reflect the performance of any available investments. Also, you will have to pay taxes when you start taking withdraw-als from a traditional IRA, and any withdrawals you make before you turn age 59½ might be subject to a 10% penalty.
Larger or smaller down payment? The bigger your down payment, the smaller your monthly payments, and the more you may have available to invest each month. But if you go with a smaller down payment, you most likely will initially have more money available for other purposes, such as paying down debt or purchasing investments. You’ll have to compare the alternatives carefully. In fact, you’ll have to compare the options for each ques-tion we’ve looked at because mortgage issues have an emotional component as well as a financial one, and only you can make the decisions that fit your situation. So think about your choices today, as they can have a big impact on your life tomorrow.

Born-again people make mistakes, plain and simple. I know for my own life that I have flat out missed God at times. But that does not mean I am looking for or making an attempt to justify sin in my life, just the opposite. I am always looking for a way to grow in the righteousness of God. Righteousness simply means right standing with Him. And I become right not because of my good works, not because of anything I have done but simply because of what Jesus has done for me when God raised Him from the dead. Now he sits at the right hand of the Father ever making intercession, in other words, praying and rooting you on. Jesus is your biggest cheerleader, he wants you to succeed! That is why the Bible is so important to us. It is not just a religious book but it is a copy of a covenant, an unbroken and eternal promise, and it is sworn in blood. Jesus came and He established a new covenant with us. Jesus is called the Lamb of God because He was the final sacrifice under this covenant. When His sinless blood was shed for you and for me, that that settled the sacrificing for sins forever. When you become a believer, the blood of Jesus does not just cover up your sins so they can’t be seen, it completely redeems you. Your sins do not exist anymore, God throws them in the depths of the sea and then He posts a sign that says “No Fishing”. Don’t go fishing for your sins. His blood makes you clean, God sees you through the blood as totally and wholly in right standing before Him as if you never committed a single sin, somebody say “WOW”! And if you sin again, you simply repent before Him and that same blood will continue to cleanse you from all wrong doing. Jesus paid the price for your sin and for my sin. We simply need to humble ourselves before Him, confess that we have sinned and fallen short of the mark, and ask Him to cleanse us and forgive us. The minute you do that the Blood goes to work on your behalf. You don’t have to pay any price because you can’t; Jesus has already paid the ultimate price. There is nothing that you can do to be forgiven, except ask for forgiveness and have faith in the Blood! Because of the Blood you are innocent as if you had never sinned. You have been redeemed, you have been bought back, Jesus had paid the price for you and now you don’t need to go to hell. This truth makes the upcoming Resurrection Sunday something special in the eyes of those who understand the price that was paid for them. Make sure you find a Bible believing church to worship on this Resurrection Celebration. That Sunday marks the most significant event in the history of our world, there will never be another day such as that!

WHY MEN SHOULD NOT RESPOND TO ADVICE COLUMNS!
Dear John,I hope you can help me. The other day, I set off for work, leaving my husband in the house watching TV. My car stalled, and then it broke down about a mile down the road, and I had to walk back to get my husband’s help. When I got home, I couldn’t believe my eyes. He was in our bedroom with the neighbor’s daughter?I am 32, my husband is 34 and the neighbor’s daughter is 19. We have been married for 10 years. When I confronted him, he broke down and admitted they had been having an affair for the past six months. He won’t go to counseling, and I’m afraid I am a wreck and need advice ur-gently. Can you please help?Sincerely, Sheila
Dear Sheila,A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the en-gine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. You should also check the vacu-um pipes and the intake manifold and all of the grounding wires too. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump is faulty, causing low delivery of fuel to the in-jetors.I hope this helps,John
Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true? A: Your heart only good for so many beats, and that it... Don't waste on exercise. Everything wear out eventually.. Speeding up heart not make you live longer; it like saying you extend life of car by driv-ing faster. Want to live longer? Take nap.
Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio? A: Well, if you have body and you have fat, your ratio one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio two to one, etc.
Q: What are some of the advantages of participat-ing in a regular exercise program? A: Can't think of single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No pain...good! Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you? A: YOU NO LISTEN! Food are fried these day in vegetable oil. In fact, they permeated by it. How could getting more vegetable be bad for you?!?
Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle? A: Definitely not! When you exercise muscle, it get bigger. You should only be doing sit-up if you want bigger stomach.
This is my kind of Doctor!
