ON THE COVER...
Due to the unique circumstances surrounding the length of this half term we have made the decision to extend the final deadline for the current enrichment tasks to the Wednesday 29th June, 2011. These will be the final enrichments tasks students will be expected to complete this academic year. We are hoping that the additional time will allow students to produce high quality pieces of enrichment. Whenever possible, we would like to encourage students to hand completed enrichments well before the deadline day to avoid ‘last minute panics’.
The Physical Education staff would like to thank the PSSA for their recent donations to the department. Through their hard work and efforts they have funded 2 sets of reversible Netball bibs and some amazing stopwatches. The department are looking forward to using these resources in lessons and during extra curricular clubs.
The Netball bibs were in action at the Portsmouth School Sport Netball Tournament last night and were first worn by the year 8’s. 2 teams competed in the 1st round of matches and both teams beat Mayfield and City Girls. The Admirals Glory narrowly lost their game to St Edmunds but Nelsons Storm held them to an exciting draw. More games are to be played on the 25th May against Springfield and Priory, where the overall winner will be decided for the year 7 & 8 competition. Year 10 and 11 girls have their opportunity to compete for the title on the 18th May – good luck girls!

enrichment deadline update

The latest Quiz held on Friday 13th was another great success, with nearly £600 raised for PSSA funds. The quiz started with a few surprised faces when exercises
were suggested to get the brain cells
in motion, but soon resumed to the normal format. The new Quizmaster Jan Andrews was ably assisted with scoring by Abbie Stone Houghton, and Oliver having stepped down from the role to concentrate on his exams, was in attendance with a team of year 11’s, Bang Tidy. We
were pleased to see more young people attending this event, and hope this could continue when the next quiz is held on Friday 23rd September.
The next big event being organised is the Community Fayre on 25th June. With 100 stalls, live band and group performing, a rodeo bull, go carts, a barbeque and much more, this is a day not to be missed. We would still welcome any help on the day, and still have spaces for car booters or exhibitors to come along and join the fun. The event is on from 10-2 and admission is 30p. Admirals Got Talent Show has been postponed for this term but will be happening in the Autumn Term. Details of this event will be available to students from your Student Council Rep and Tutor Teachers early next term, so start thinking of what you can do to entertain us. Anything accepted as long as it’s suitable for a family audience.
Other events for your diaries are; Fashion Show and Ladies Night Thursday 17th November. More details to follow.
ALNS Theatre Company was founded in 2006 and is run by students for students with pupils directing and producing hard hitting issue based theatre. Students running the company are on average 15/16 years old and take total responsibility for the entire production. Over the years the company has addressed such issues as bullying, child poverty, anorexia and teenage pressures. The 2011 company are staging “Wasted”, a powerful production exploring the important issue of teenage Binge Drinking and its consequences. An issue that we feel is hugely relevant to our generation. ‘Wasted’ tells the story of Anna, who relives the horrors of her teenage life that was caused by the consumption of alcohol. Using flashbacks, this emotive and hard hitting play shows how she coped and got away from the problem.
It is well known that all cities have teenagers who drink too much alcohol, and that is why we have decided to produce this show and present the issue in a way that every teenager can identify with.
ALNS THEATRE COMPANY
Yesterday 16 of our Year 7 girls competed in a Portsmouth Cheer Off against 7 other schools. Over the past 8 weeks our girls have been practising hard at learning a routine for the competition. They were lucky enough to have some expert coaching from some members of the Portsmouth University Cheer squad.
After some hard training sessions they learnt a routine comprising of lifts, jumps, chants and cheers and our girls showed excellent spirit and enthusiasm amongst some very tough competition. The girls were a brilliant representation of Admiral Lord Nelson School and with their amazing efforts the festival was a great showcase for their talent.
A very big well done to all the girls involved.
enrichment deadline update
ALNS Theatre Company are staging this production in partnership with Portsmouth City Council who are funding the show with a grant from “Find Your Talent – the legacy programme” the last funding of its kind! This funding has enabled the production to be staged at THE NEW THEATRE ROYAL which is a hugely exciting opportunity for all of the students involved in the show and means that we can reach a much wider audience. As well as being performed on stage, ‘Wasted’ is being turned into a film that will be distributed to all of the secondary schools in Portsmouth. This is paired with lesson plans that are being put together by the company working with Portsmouth City Council and be used in all Portsmouth secondary schools as part of their PHSEE programmes about alcohol abuse. The show itself will be on the 15th and 16th June at the ‘New Theatre Royal’ at 7.30pm, tickets are available directly from the Theatre Royal Box Office and will be on sale in school for £4.
CHEERLEADING TEAM
What inspires YOU at school? Perhaps it’s the displays of the student’s phenomenal artwork, or, the sheer air of success
that follows pupils like a shadow, or maybe nothing at all.
That’s exactly the attitude that Christopher Jenkins, influential artist and craftsmen wants to change. He came to ALNS in May to inspire our students, making the school a
happier and brighter place. But how does he do this?
It all began at the tender age of 12, where growing up in London he developed his passion for exploring. It started
along the Thames with walks for fun then he discovered a much more exciting life by exploring the unknown. Soon, derelict houses and other adventurous places became his playground.
Stemming from his lifelong interest in certain structures and how they adapt, succumb to and fight against the natural world. That’s how it started, and now he is bringing that very vibe into the school, to create structures that are built to inspire. Christopher quoted “Everything is stories, it’s who
we are! “ Three dimensional models that differ in appearance depending on where you stand, children can create their own ideas
and opinions on what the artwork is.
You may recognise some of Jenkins previous work from the living willow and hazel project, where twisted pieces of willow were
constructed on the field.
They’re created out of junk, and various woodland pieces, that to the human eye have no purpose or look unappealing, but when
combined with other objects make a purposeful exhibition of art. We went to see what was happening first hand and interviewed some of the students involved.
We observed them creating towering structures from wood as they told us that their only instruction was to use their imagination.
One student, Jacob Knight said “It’s about looking at things at things in a different way”. That’s exactly the type of inspiration Jacob and many other students have been given by Christopher Jenkins and his exuberant art models.
So, to round off, the admirable artwork that garnishes the halls was all worth it as it makes ALNS a brighter and more interesting place.

Everything is stories, it’s who we are!
On Thursday 12th May, we hosted the Tesco Great School Fun Run. 100 of our year 7 students and 50 students from Mayfield competed in a 2km fun run.
The students all competed in great spirits, the music was pumping out around the course and all students worked really hard and enjoyed the event. The Great Run team thanked the school for hosting the Portsmouth area event and said our students were brilliant and full of enthusiasm. They are now continuing to tour around schools throughout the country to try to spread the running bug and help educate students on the importance of staying fit and healthy whilst having fun!
Tommy Scutt in Year 7 came in 1st place, Dan Sibley came 2nd and Bradley Hayward came 3rd. Congratulations to everyone who took part!

This year’s Ski trip saw a return to Saalbach in Austria. The trip was a huge success and all of the staff and students involved had a very enjoyable holiday.
The first two days were glorious; plenty of hot sunshine and clear blue skies, but this also meant substandard snow. Alas, by the third day it snowed again and, as the famous Christmas song goes, ‘Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow’ and it did, big time!
The students were amazed at the sheer volume and snowball fights quickly followed, coupled with lots of laughs watching each other trying to ski through knee high snow.
Other activities included: curling, pizza and a disco with Matraver’s school (with whom ALNS shared the trip).
Next year’s ski trip is already being organised. Please see Mr Gray as soon as possible as places fill up fast!
Mr Styllis would like to extend his thanks to Mr Gray, Miss Roe and Miss Churchill for helping him to organise and run the trip and to the staff and students at Matravers School for being excellent companions.
The start of the Rounders season couldn’t have started any better.
On the 2nd and 3rd May students in year 8 and 11 attended the Portsmouth Schools Rounders Tournaments, hosted by PHS.
Both teams displayed excellent levels of skill and ability whilst working together to become winners in both year groups.
The girls are to be commended for all their hard work and excellent sportsmanship throughout and should be incredibly proud of their efforts that saw the Year 8 team beat Priory Sports College, PHS and Springfield and only the Grammar School could hold them to a draw in a shortened innings.
The Year 11’s cruised to victory over Priory Sports College, PHS and PGS and saw them retain their title from last season.

Gambia 2011: One student’s experience – A diary by Jessica Bulloch
Fundraising for Gambia
Zac Winter in 7N has always wanted to go to Gambia. When Zac heard that we were raising money for mosquito nets he decided to do a sponsored bike ride. Zac wanted to raise this money because he felt it wasn’t fair that so many people were dying from malaria and that the nets would help to save lives. Zac raised £50 and intends on doing the same next year but he would like to raise even more money. Well done Zac!
We are really sorry that we could not communicate since you left the Gambia. It was
due to some pressure beyond our control.However, we are really grateful
for the wonderful and timely donation towards the electricity project. It was announced to the school and everyone was really thankful.
Out of the amount, we have installed the electricity and to computers one in the school secretary’s office and the other in the Principles
office.
7th April I am packed and ready to go. I am very excited and can’t wait to get there. I don’t know what to expect or
what it will be like.
8th April – Day 1We had to be at school for 2am and travelled to the airport. When we got to the airport we split off into groups and went to have a look around the shops. The flight was 6 hours long! When we landed in the Gambia, we had to walk onto the tarmac. I couldn’t get over the heat as I walked off of the plane. Mucki was there to meet us off of
the plane and we boarded an open truck and went on a tour around one of the towns, then we went to the hotel, found
our room, got changed and went to relax
by the pool after a hectic days travelling.
9th April – Day 2Today was very hot! In fact, Mucki said it was one of the hottest days of the year so far! We went to the monkey park which was amazing as the monkeys weren’t in cages so that meant we were able to have the monkeys come and sit on us and we were able to feed them. After spending some time with the monkeys, we went to visit the clinic where we donated some medical supplies. After lunch, we went to the crocodile park and had the chance to touch a crocodile called Charlie!
10th April – Day 3We had an early start today to go on the roots tour. We had a two hour boat journey to get to Kunta Kinteh Island where we went to the village and learnt about the slave trade in Gambia and also about how the village runs. We got back on the boat and had lunch and then we took the boat to Fort James Island
11th April – Day 4We went to Mucki’s compound today and were split into groups and went to the market to buy the ingredients we needed to help prepare food for lunch. We met Mucki’s family and spent time playing with the children. We also went to a school for orphans where we donated the red noses that Sainsbury’s gave to us, pens, pencils, football kits, footballs and other resources. Once we had worn ourselves out playing with the children, we went back to the compound to eat the food we had prepared earlier. After lunch, we watched Mrs Bulloch sponsor a child and we gave out some of the mosquito nets that we had fundraised to buy before we left England. After lots of photos, we went to the football ground to give them the first aid supplies to give to the teams
who play football there. It was a very long but
very enjoyable day!!

All office work-viz tellers, test and examination questions are all typed and printed in the school. We are now trying to install an internet web page. However we realized hosting a website could be very expensive for the school but we are trying to see the best option and we shall certainly inform you of all developments.
We are proud to say that the collaboration between the two schools has brought
numerous positive changes. Lessons taught are no longer chalk and board only. We can now use projector during the teaching of some lessons.
We therefore wish to thank all the students, parents, and teachers of ALNS who have contributed to the raising of this fund.
This year is an election in the Gambia and we shall inform you of all the development. Extend our best regards to the principal and all other
members of ALNS.

12th April – Day 5Today we took the open truck to the only blind school in the Gambia and then we went to the nursery that we support. We played games with the children, sang songs and did some colouring. We gave these children some of the red noses which they loved playing with as well as footballs, outdoor games, work sheets, colouring pencils and lots of other fun things for them to enjoy. They were so happy with our donations. We left the nursery and went to the local village to give out more mosquito nets. After another busy day we went to paradise beach where we had some lunch and sat and enjoyed the sun and some well earned rest.
13th April – Day 6Today we went to the school that we support, Kabifita Upper Basic School to give them the money that we have raised through non-school uniform days. This money will be used to go towards putting electricity in the school. We split into groups and went into lessons to see how they learn in Gambia. We had lunch in the school with some of the teachers and then went to see where Mucki was building a nursery and he talked us through his plans.
14th April – Day 7We had to be up at 6am today as we were going to Senegal. We boarded a ferry and crossed the Senegal border. Once across the border, we went to a safari park where we saw Rhino’s, Monkeys, Giraffes, Zebras and many more animals. We sat and had lunch and then went to another village to give the clinic there some mosquito nets. This also meant that some of the mums that had just had babies had a mosquito net too. We went back to the hotel to enjoy our last night in the Gambia.
15th April – Day 8As today was our last day in the Gambia, we had the choice of relaxing by the pool or to visit the craft market. On the way to the airport we picked Mucki up and gave him a card that we had all signed to say Thank you for looking after us.
We had a brilliant time in the Gambia.

As a community school, ALNS has a variety of facilities available for hire.
We are now taking bookings for the coming season and have various time slots available within our sports hall, dance studios, drama studio and main hall and also on our Astro-Turf and Multi-Use Games Area.
We are able to offer discounts for junior clubs and block bookings and our facilities are open until 10pm Monday to Friday and 9am-10pm at weekends.
On Tuesday 17th May, 15 of our students were the first in Portsmouth to be given the opportunity to go to the Mountbatten Centre to try some track cycling. The students learnt how to use the racing bikes then competed against each other in time trial competitions of one lap and 200m sprint. Tom Fry (Year 11) powered his way to victory in both events with an amazing time of 15.34 seconds for his 200m sprint. (The only person to beat his time was Mr Morgan-the cycling machine himself!)
Other schools in Portsmouth will be taking teams along to the track to try and beat the great times set by our ALNS track team! Students who hold records and have set excellent times will be invited to further gifted and talented sessions in the summer holidays...so watch this space for our future ALNS cycling champions!!

FIELDThe school grounds have a very large open field which this been used in the past for sporting events as well as Corporate and Business events.
ASTRO-TURF PITCHFull size, floodlit Astroturf pitch. Available to hire as a full size pitch or as 2 five a side football pitches, with goals to match, we can also accommodate your hockey games as the pitch is equipped with hockey goals.
SPORTS HALLFull sized sports hall with sprung floor. Has markings for football, netball, basketball, tennis and badminton. Fully equipped with cricket nets, 5 a-side goals and basketball hoops.

TRACK CYCLING CHALLENGE
Wednesday 18th May was a day of firsts and lasts for the year 10 and 11 Netballers.
The year 10’s, after 4 years of avoiding any type of netball competition, formed a team and entered into the Portsmouth Schools Partnership tournament
hosted by City Girls.What the team lacked in experience was certainly made up for in team spirit and perseverance as competition was of a relatively good standard. The team made positive progress as the competition developed and
they showed some promising phases of play which can be built
upon for next year.The year 11’s found themselves at the other end of the spectrum, competing in their final competition of their ALNS sporting history. The girls
performed well and came second overall – having been beaten by 1 goal, scored in the last 10 seconds, in their game against the hosts.
Miss Brander would like to thank the team for their continued contribution to school sport and will be fondly remembered as the “multi
sport – dream team”. As the title suggests, the multi-talented sportswomen represented the school in nearly every activity possible from netball to football, rounders to badminton to name but a few.

DANCE STUDIOWe have two dance studios available to hire, both have a full mirror wall with one coming with a sprung laminate floor and the other with a padded vinyl floor. Both come equipped with their own sound system.
