CEO’s UpdateAs you will be aware, Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) and the Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association of Victoria (GOTBA) have been in discussion over a range of issues including prizemoney, track maintenance and compliance procedures. Both GRV and GOTBA support the following directions: A thriving sport with more racing and career opportunities for more people and greyhounds at all levels. We also want a strong industry with a clear plan that will allow participants to invest with confidence in their future. And a respected code with the strong, transparent, and accountable welfare and integrity standards expected by the broader community.

It is in this spirit that we are achieving agreement on some key issues, particularly prizemoney. On Friday 27 August, GRV’s Chair, Peita Duncan, announced that the GRV Board had signed off on a $5.3 million increase in prizemoney for 2021-22. This means GRV has now committed to prizemoney of $63.3 million directly for participants over this financial year, a record for any greyhound racing jurisdiction in the world. And the GRV Board will continue to review prizemoney status over the year to identify more potential opportunities to improve returns to participants.

The next step is in your hands. GRV is asking you to review several different options for how this $5.3 million increase can be best shared among all participants via a Survey. You can find more details at www.grv.org.au/pm-survey. Copies of the Survey will be available at your local Club. For assistance with the Survey GRV’s Participant Support Line (PSL) is ready to help. Contact the PSL on 1300 144 360 or send email to [email protected]. The survey will run until 8pm on Tuesday 7 September. The GRV Board will meet on 14 September to consider the structure of the final prize money package. Both GRV and GOTBA are pleased with this outcome following mediation and discussion and both parties are now expecting to have more productive discussions on other issues and how best to work together to help secure the sport’s long-term future.

One example of the future of Victorian greyhound racing is now nearing completion, the Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club redevelopment. This six-million-dollar project is the single biggest undertaking by the sport in Victoria in decades and it will set new benchmarks for future investment in club infrastructure and safe racing. The track design and technology, like automated drop boxes, electric lures, and purpose-built LED lighting, will optimise racing safety. And the upgraded club facilities and super-sized semaphore screen will further strengthen the club as a community hub. Work has proceeded on schedule despite COVID 19. Over the next few weeks, the track sand will be laid down and all key equipment and systems tested. Then we can look forward to trials and a progressive opening prior to the commencement of the Gippsland Racing Carnival at the start of summer.

As a timely reminder of what our sport can achieve working together in the community, I’m very pleased to note that Victorian greyhound racing is prominently represented in the Community Clubs Victoria (CCV) 2019-20 Awards. There were more than 270 nominations across 26 categories from nearly 80 clubs this year, so it was a packed field. Among the finalists are the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club for Best Club Community Involvement and Sale Greyhound Club’s Peter Johnston for Club Manager of the Year. And in the Best Social Inclusion Community Service category is the TAB Great Chase community program, the Red Dog campaign for bushfire support and the Blue Dog campaign for the Police Legacy Remembrance Fund. I congratulate everyone involved from Victoria’s greyhound racing community and look forward to the Community Clubs Victoria Awards being announced on 2 October.

Finally, I again thank everyone for persevering through the current COVID 19 restrictions. Once again it has been a challenge, but we have kept our sport on track. Hopefully we can look forward to opening up for a late Spring and Summer of great racing.

Collinda Patty registered her fifth win from 13 starts. Ten days earlier, she broke Dyna Double One’s longstanding Sandown Park 595m track record with an amazing 33.56sec performance.

Koblenz ($6.30), who had won 12 of his past 17, was a further 0.51L away in third place. ‘Team Dailly’ pin-up and dual G1 winner Qwara Bale ($2.20F) finished fifth. Lala Kiwi – whose dam Lala Shim is an ’aunty’ of retired superstar Shima Shine – posted her 11th win from 25 starts. She won the Lil Dickie Oaks earlier this year.

How the race was won: Superstar sprinter Aston Rupee underlined his claim to the mantle of Australia’s fastest greyhound when winning back-to-back G3 Speed Star match race series at The Meadows. Trained by Glenn Rounds, Aston Rupee won the G3 Bill Collins Speed Star (515m) at Sandown Park on June 2. In his head-to-head, Aston Rupee defeated Weblec Blazer by 3L. The next best individual time – 2.97L slower – was semaphored by ‘ultimate professional’Tiggerlong Tonk in 29.798sec, followed by Weblec Blazer in29.803. Aston Rupee, also runner-up in the G3 LaunchingPad, notched his 12th win from 24 starts.

Billy conquers all comers in Waterloo CupBY ANDREW COPLEYA powerful come-from-behind performance saw All Inn Billy enter the history books by winning the 148th Waterloo Cup at Longwood.

His experienced trainer Tony Duncan labelled the victory as the biggest thrill of his career as his greyhound overpowered Kasemi (Kristie Collyer) to make it six unbeaten courses across the series.

“Who would have thought I’d be in this position a month ago,” an emotional Duncan said at day’s end.

“I’ve won a Presidents Cup at Horsham, Trainer of the Year at Shepparton and Greyhound of the Year at Shepparton, but this is extra special.”Duncan said the powerful finish has become a key trait of his All Inn Billy’s armour.

“I took All Inn Billy coursing for the first time a few weeks ago and he managed to beat (reigning Waterloo Cup winner) Making Gravy, so I thought why not put him in the Waterloo Cup,” he said.

“Once he reaches the driver’s tower at Longwood, which is about three quarters of the way to the finish line, he finds another gear.”

Duncan, a semi-regular on the coursing circuit for more than a decade, gave All Inn Billy an easy week after day one of the 2021 Waterloo Cup last Sunday.

“He pulled up so well after the first day. The next day he was tearing around the paddocks at home and was ready to go again, but I gave him the week off and it paid dividends,” he said.

Based in Harston, Duncan breeds and trains the ‘All Inn’ greyhounds, with this particular litter – by Barcia Bale out of All Inn Amy – proving themselves to be very handy on the circle, including All Inn Billy, who has won 12 from 36 on TAB tracks.

“I said to dad very early on that I’d win $100,000 with this litter, and I was right as they’ve won 50 races between them and over a hundred grand,” Duncan said.

“I’ve always trailled my dogs regularly at Longwood, but especially in recent months as my paddocks have been under water because we’ve had so much rain, so that could have worked in All Inn Billy’s favour today.”

All Inn Billy claimed a first prize of $12,970 plus VicGreys Bonus, rug and replica trophy, while he’ll also have his name inscribed on the original Waterloo Cup silverware.Consolation events, the Waterloo Plate and Waterloo Purse were won by Orson Emmy and Hugo respectively.

Shepparton ticks the boxes with track safetyBY TONY HOMFRAY

Greyhound Racing Victoria’s continual pursuit of safer racing across Victoria relies on a range of interrelated disciplines.

These encompass continued safe and improved track design, quality track maintenance and education and preparation of greyhounds.

To achieve the safest possible outcome, all of these must work concurrently to achieve the overall objective of reducing racing injuries as part of the GRV Safe Racing Program and commitment backed by a $10m investment across the state.

One example of this integration is Shepparton Greyhound Racing Club.

Over a three-year period until 2019, Shepparton had racing injury statistics in the mid-40s per 1000 starters.

However, infrastructure and other interventions from 2018 to 2019 has seen this level reduced to 35 per 1000, making Shepparton one of the safest tracks in the State.

Among these improvements were an increase in track camber to reduce race turning injuries, improved track harrowing, increased track monitoring and water management and the introduction of roll-on starting boxes.

The introduction of these boxes was based on modelling undertaken by the University of Technology, Sydney at other tracks and is designed to reduce initial start clustering thereby reducing track injuries.

While the Shepparton Club has worked closely with GRV infrastructure in relation to the physical improvements to the track, club manager, Carl McGrath, believes other measures undertaken by the club have also impacted the reduction

of race injuries. These include the Shepparton track staff’s willingness to adapt and respond to suggested changes.

Among the non-track changes is the introduction of a resident veterinary clinic at the track for up to three days a week.

Separate from the GRV race day veterinary oversight, and dealing exclusively with greyhounds, the Shepparton Greyhound Veterinary Clinic provides the local industry with a range of regular veterinary services as well as desexing services.

“Apart from providing basic veterinary services the clinic already offers dental work, x-rays and some surgeries and we see it as an additional participant service which greatly assists in animal welfare,” Carl said.

“Because of this we have had a lot of positive comments from participants indicating that the dogs are racing more often and not suffering as many injuries.”

He also believes that the introduction of free trialling has had a significant impact on reducing racing injuries.

“With the support of GRV we introduced free trialling for a six-month period with a view that it would ensure local trainers and breeders did not minimise race preparation,” he said.

“It was so successful that it was extended for a further three months before GRV introduced it at venues across the state.

“I believe it has played a role in greyhound safety and welfare by providing participants with a benefit, both to them and their animal by encouraging them to trial before nomination.”

So, combined with Shepparton’s track team and GRV’s racing team, improvement ideas are continually tested and implemented which ensures Shepparton ticks all the boxes in the continuing quest for safer racing.

VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDSThe Code of Practice requires all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination and ensure your Kennel Cough vaccine is up to date. Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine.

In addition to recording your greyhound’s vaccinations in its Greyhound Record, please also provide GRV with copies of your vaccination certificates for GRV to upload into FastTrack so there is a permanent record. This is particularly important if you are considering, or are already, breeding from your greyhound. These vaccination certificates are required to keep the Pink Card active.

GRV’s Desexing and Dental SchemeGRV’s Desexing and Dental scheme launched on 1 July 2021 is working extremely well and has received close to 200 applications. GRV is working closely with applicants and veterinarians to ensure the application process is kept as simple as possible. If in doubt, please ring or email the welfare department for more information. Key points:

■ While the scheme is set up for greyhounds beingrehomed (including those booked into GAP), fundingis also available for those being retained as pets byparticipants, regardless of when the greyhound wasretired

■ You can use any veterinary clinic in Victoria for thesurgery; there is no approved list of clinics (so far over30 clinics have taken part)

■ While most invoices have so far come in under theGRV funding cap ($500 for females; $400 for males),it is a good idea to get an estimate of prices whenyou book your greyhound in, noting the most variablepart will be the dental treatment

■ Both the desexing and dental treatment must becertified by the veterinarian; however, the teeth onlyneed to be done if they need doing; if in doubt pleasecontact welfare before surgery

■ If your greyhound has previously been desexedoutside of the scheme, funding is still available fordental treatment

Surrendering greyhounds to a shelterSurrendering a greyhound to a council pound is a breach of the greyhound Code of Practice. A council pound can either be a council-run facility or a facility run by another organisation (including an animal shelter) that contracts to the council. If a participant is considering surrendering a greyhound to a shelter (i.e. not a volunteer re-homing group) all racing connections they must check with each of their local councils to determine if that shelter is acting as the contracted pound to their municipality. Electronic anti-barking collars – legal requirements in VictoriaThe use of electronic anti-barking collars is highly restricted in Victoria. There are very specific laws under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulations which govern who can use electronic collars on dogs, when and for how long.

Participants must not use electronic anti-barking collars on any dog. If you wish to utilise this tool to manage barking behaviour, please carefully read the information on the Animal Welfare Victoria Website and the Code of Practice for Training Dogs and Cats to Wear Electronic Collars; and contact Animal Welfare Victoria on 136 186 for more information.

Preparing for the fire seasonSpring is a time for significant vegetation growth and ultimately increased fuel load. While it seems that the cold weather hasn’t really left us, it won’t be long before the temperatures begin to increase, and vegetation begins to dry out. Early preparation for the fire season will reduce risk. Now is the time to get your fire plans in order and avoid leaving things until the last minute:

☐ Prepare or review your fire plan, including evacuationoptions; if you choose to take your greyhounds withyou, contact your local Municipal Council to find outwhich of their evacuation centres will allow animalsand add the address and details to your plan.

☐ Ensure lawns are kept short and regularly slash longgrass in surrounding paddocks, yards, kennel blocksand alongside slipping tracks etc.

☐ On bigger properties, a clearing of about 10 metres ofwell-mown grass around your home and kennel blockis advisable.

☐ Remove piles of fine fuels such as leaves, as it willprobably be where embers will land and cause spotfires.

☐ Empty gutters of leaves on your home, kennels andother buildings.

☐ Make sure trees on your property are healthy, ideallytrimmed to 2 metres above the ground, with no deadlimbs and no vegetation underneath them.

☐ Ensure your insurance is sufficient and current.

Cassendra Jayakody – VRT Hearing 2 July 2021– (GAR) 83(2), failed to present the greyhound “Dyna Virion” free of any prohibited substance ‘Theobromine’ for an event at Sandown on 24 January 2021. Miss Jayakody pleaded ‘Guilty’, The VRT imposed a 3mth suspension wholly suspended for 24mths. “Dyna Virion” was disqualified from the event.

Jack Campbell – VRT Appeal 6 July 2021 – GAR 69A(1), the greyhound “Frothy’s Jett” was charged with Fail To Chase at Geelong on 29 June 2021. Mr Campbell pleaded ‘Not Guilty’. The VRT dismissed the appeal.

Sebastiano Gibilisco – VRT Hearing 6 July 2021 – (GAR) 83(2), failed to present the greyhound “Hagrid Grange” free of any prohibited substance ‘Ketoprofen’ for an event at Bendigo on 30 December 2020. Mr Gibilisco pleaded ‘Guilty’, The VRT imposed a fine of $1,500, with $1,000 suspended for 12mths. “Hagrid Grange” was disqualified from the event.

Ivan Chircop – VRT Hearing 21 July 2021 – GAR105(4)(i) & GAR86(p), Mr Chircop failed to notify GRV of the location of 26 greyhounds coming to or leaving his care and custody within 3 working days. On 30 April 2020, Mr Chircop failed to comply with a lawful direction to update his FastTrack records for the greyhounds in his care. Mr Chircop pleaded ‘Guilty’ to both charges. The VRT imposed a 3-month suspension on each charge, to be served concurrently and wholly suspended for 12 months.

Calven Russell – VRT Hearing 27 July 2021 – LRR42.9(a), GAR106(1)(c), GAR86(p), LRR11.8, LRR11.12(b) & GAR86(o), Between December 2019 and July 2020, Mr Russell failed to notify GRV of the death of a greyhound, failed to provide satisfactory kennels and failed to comply with lawful directions to improve kennel conditions at his property. Additionally, Mr Russell, while suspended, transferred 11 greyhounds to his spouse and attended various Greyhound Racing Clubs to assist in trialling greyhounds between 3 July 2020 and 24 July 2020. Mr Russell pleaded ‘Not Guilty’ to charges 1 through 4, and ‘Guilty’ to charges 5 through 7. The VRT found all charges proven and imposed a totalsuspension period of 3 months to be served immediately, with a further 6-month suspension wholly suspended for 12 months. The VRT also imposed a total fine of $1000.

GRV VIC BRED Series races are designed to promote and reward Victorian Bred Greyhounds. Each series is designed to give an equal opportunity to a variety of greyhounds, of similar grade and experience, a chance to compete for above average prizemoney.

To assist participants with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 8329 1100 or by emailing [email protected].

All sessions for the next 2 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month.

To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must:

■ have a current C5 vaccination as per the specific GAPVACCINATION REQUIREMENTS described on this pagegiven at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment;and

■ not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least onemonth (preferably two months) prior to the testing day(“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihoodof your greyhound passing the temperament test. The‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is availablethrough Racing Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.

Participants may be asked to provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. Note: there in no fee for greyhounds being entered into GAP.

The principles of the GRV Hot Weather Policy also apply to days when greyhounds are accepted into GAP. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, entry sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, entry sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.

GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTSYour greyhound must have had the following vaccinations:

■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 wasgiven earlier than 12 months of age); and

■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza)within the last 6 months where the Bordetellacomponent is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine.

The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. Note the GAP vaccination requirements are more specific than a standard injectable C5 vaccination given annually. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements, please contact GRV.

Satisfactory Trials are conducted following TAB race meetings. Trial sessions are subject to late change and weather conditions.
