SUMMER E-BROCHURE PERIODIC SUMMER E-BROCHURE FROM YORK PARKS AND RECREATION ISSUE 5 August 28, 2020 I hope this e-newsle.er finds you all well and enjoying the beau8ful end of summer weather. We are fortunate to live in a place where outdoor recrea8onal opportuni8es are both plen8ful and breathtaking. Have you seen the sunrise over the Nubble? Or one of the rainbows over Mt.A.? I encourage you to get out and explore your own “backyard”, it’s good for the soul! Despite a global pandemic, I would say that summer at York Parks and Recrea8on was rela8vely successful. The Parks crew worked to keep parks and athle8c fields in top shape, a dedicated custodial team cleaned and disinfected public restrooms, YOU supported a carry-in/carry-out trash ini8a8ve by leaving no trace, the lifeguards and ambassadors worked to keep you, and our visitors, safe and healthy on York beaches, counselors created socially distanced games for children to play, coaches facilitated skills and drills-based athle8cs, trails crew maintained miles of trail, we hosted outdoor movie nights at Bog Road, and hosted 2 virtual road races, giU shop a.endants greet customers with a smile; albeit behind a mask, and the Center for Ac8ve Living staff and volunteers con8nue to stay connected to our 50+ popula8on, in many ways. For a couple of weeks, it almost felt like a normal summer. We hope that you felt that, too. We were not able to offer the plethora of programs that we (and you) are accustomed to, but, we did, safely, provide some opportuni8es to all age groups for being physically and mentally ac8ve. As we look to fall and winter and begin to plan for programs and ac8vi8es that provide opportuni8es, build community, and meet needs, we’d like to hear from you. Help Us, Help You! Please join me along with Recrea8on Coordinator, Andy Kaherl, for a discussion about how York Parks and Recrea8on Department can help meet your needs in this challenging and uncertain 8me. Do you need childcare due to hybrid and/or remote learning? Are you looking for non-tradi8onal, tempered risk ac8vi8es for your family? Do you prefer virtual programs? Are you looking for mid-week, day8me recrea8on opportuni8es for your children because you have chosen to distance learn only, this school year? Do you have ideas to share? Would you like to know what we have for ideas? We hope that you will plan to a.end one of the following focus group sessions. Registra8on may be done online or by calling the office. Limited space is available, per session. All discussions will take place, socially distanced, outside at the Grant House at Goodrich Park. Please bring a lawn/beach chair, your mask, and a willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue. Tuesday, September 1 st 10:00am Tuesday, September 1 st 1:00pm Tuesday, September 1 st 5:30pm Wednesday, September 2 nd 5:30pm Unable to join us, or not comfortable mee8ng in person? We have a digital op8on for you to provide your feedback. h.ps://form.jogorm.com/202383853309053 Thank you, in advance, for taking the 8me to Help Us, Help You. On behalf of Team Parks and Recrea8on we wish you the very best as the season changes. We’re confident that together, we got this! Be well, Robin Cogger, Parks and Recrea8on Director MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

2020 York Beach Ocean Rescue Season The 2020 YBOR Season will go down in the books as one of the more challenging seasons on record. COVID 19 restrictions and CDC guidelines were amongst our biggest challenges, but the new Community Ambassador program helped our staff weather those challenges and significantly reduced any chance transmission. Our YBOR Staff started on a high note by obtaining United States

Lifesaving Association accreditation and getting all YBOR lifeguards advanced certification in both First Aid and CPR /AED. We are now one of only 6 beaches in “all” of New England that hold this prestigious certification. Statistically speaking, your chances of drowning on a USLA guarded beach are 1 in 18 million. That is the reason we moved to adopt these standards and go through the USLA certification process.

One of your biggest highlights was having Jim Kenny from York Hospital come to our facility in mid-season to instruct all of our lifeguards concerning how to deliver a baby on the beach. I suspect there are not many ocean rescue lifeguard staffs in New England with that particular medical skill!

The “save season” (I.e. as we call it) has been highly successful on the beach, with minor saves and assists being made throughout the season as usual. The YBOR preventive philosophy, coupled with the new and stringent USLA training standards decreases the likelihood that anyone will drown on our beaches. Additionally, we experienced several coastal calls to some very perilous rescues in areas beyond the beach, such as using our Water Rescue Craft (jet ski) to assisting York Fire and Rescue up to the Nubble Lighthouse. All in all, a very safe beach season in a very challenging COVID 19 World!
