The Cocktail CornerBy Staff Writer Jaime Knutson

Golden Beer Cupcakes, with Beer & BaconFrosting. Don’t Knock it ‘Til You’ve Tried It.

For Cupcakes,- 1 ½ cups of cake flour- 2 eggs- 3 tablespoons of butter-a dash of salt- 1 cup of light brown sugar- 1 teaspoon of baking powder-1 bottle or can of beer- ½ teaspoon of baking sodaFor Frosting,- 1 cup of butter- 5 cup of confectioner’s (powdered) sugar- 6 tablespoons of beer-bacon (Nature’s greatest miracle)

First, we need the cupcake batter. I used aHarpoon beer, and THAT was pushing it.Ichose a nice quality light-colored beer so thatmy cupcakes would be golden brown. I can’twait to try a darker-colored beer.Cream butterand brown sugar in a mixer. Add eggs one ata time, until mixed. Mix dry ingredientstogether. Pour in ¼ of the dry ingredients andmix. Then, pour in some of the beer and mix.Continue alternating until all ingredients aremixed in. For some odd reason, I obsess overfoods that come in tiny, bite-sized portions oras larger-than-life versions. Sooo, I found thesegiant silicone cupcake liners. They don’t needa muffin/cupcake pan and stand just fine ontheir own. On the left is a regular-sized liner,so you can see the difference. Bake at 350°until a toothpick comes out clean. For my minicupcakes it took about 25 minutes. For thesuper large cupcakes, it took about 35 minutes.I ended up having a little left over, so I alsomade some mini cupcakes. The batter makesabout 5 giant cupcakes, so it will probablymake about 8-12 regular cupcakes (let meknow the quantity you get if you try regular-sized). Allow cake to cool and in the meantime, prepare your frosting ingredients. If you don’tlet them cool, they will be too wet on the inside. Then, pour some flour and shake it on bottomand sides of liners until it is fully coated. Pourout excess flour. Cream the butter and abouta quarter of your sugar. Then, just as you didwith the cake, alternatively add some beer andthen sugar. If it seems to wet, then add morepowdered sugar. If it is too dry, then add morebeer. Crumble up some cooked bacon and tossit into the frosting. Mix it in. ou will need asmall, round cookie cutter for those. I cut asmall slice and fold it to make an angle. Then,I do the same thing on the other side. I use asmall piece to cover, or patch up the middle. Then I wrap one short piece around the top tomake the knot.Use toothpicks to hold together. As for the bacon ties, I made mini versions toplace on top of my giant cupcakes.I use a smallpiece to cover, or patch up the middle. Then Iwrap one short piece around the top to makethe knot. Use toothpicks to hold together. Thencover VERY tightly in aluminum foil. If youplan on making these, please see my post forbacon ties and mustaches here. There is moredetail about how to bake it. Since these aresmall, they took slightly less time than thelarger ties I created before. Then cover VERYtightly in aluminum foil. If you plan on makingthese, please see my post for bacon ties andmustaches here. There is more detail abouthow to bake it. Since these are small, they tookslightly less time than the larger ties I createdbefore.

People's Porter is a gold medal winningporter that has been aged in 20 year oldbourbon barrels. Uh oh. I've been knownto do a lot of hating on that type of beer.Let's see though. The label on Big 22 de-picts a guy raising a pint of beer in vic-tory to the delight of the cheering mobbehind him. Truly a man of the people. The label also says BBL Aged Porter todenote the bourbon treatment. Alcohol6%; SRM 30.7; IBU 42.

Roasty aroma with some sweetness fromthe bourbon and an very nice chocolatebase. Chocolate and caramel are the mostprominent flavors in the start and offer anice initial sweetness. You will not missthe bourbon character either, guaranteed. However, the bourbon seems to be a posi-tive and is not overdone. I think the factthat this is a 6% beer and not some alco-holic monster really allows the bourbonflavors to stand out in a positive way.

Light roast, a touch of vanilla and wood, and just a tiny bit of ash round out theflavor profile. Some hoppy bitternesstakes the edge off the initial sweetness aswell. Creamy, nice texture. Body is me-dium. The finish is dry and full of milkchocolate. REPEAT sips for this entireexperience over and over again. No fla-vors ever get to the point of domination;rather, each works to create an enjoyableexperience in a beer category that is notnear the top of my list! Check it out if youcan!

SYDNEY AUTO SHOW SEESLEXUS LF-LC BLUE

Australia Lexus has revealed the stunning LF-LC Blue concept at the Australian Interna-tional Motor Show in Sydney. Clad in unique Opal Blue, it is the second version of theLF-LC, first debuted at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year.

The all-new Opal Blue exterior is inspired by the lustrous base color found in the naturallyoccurring semi-precious opal stone of outback Australia.

Beneath the blue skin LF-LC combines advanced technologies and materials with organicdesign, giving an insight into what the future of sports cars may hold. Central to theconcept is a suite of advanced materials and technologies, including lightweight carbonfiber and the next generation of Lexus’ industry-leading hybrid powertrain.

New to LF-LC and derived from project LFA, LF-LC leverages Lexus’ extensive in-houseexperience in marrying carbon fiber and aluminium alloy materials to achieve a light bodymass. The result is an extremely taut body that responds quickly and crisply to driverinputs – providing the perfect platform for the next-generation Lexus Hybrid Drivesystem.

Dubbed Advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive, the system features a powerful and efficientAtkinson cycle combustion engine which is mated to an advanced high-energy batterypack. The high-energy battery pack is designed to deliver greater power from a smallerbattery than those currently used in Lexus’ range of hybrid vehicles. Combined, the LF-LCBlue concept’s gas\electric hybrid powertrain develops 372kW (500hp) – the most of anyLexus hybrid.

Lexus Australia’s Tony Cramb said that LF-LC Blue is a demonstration of what the futuremay hold for sports cars.

“For decades, Lexus has been synonymous with hybrid drivetrains, superior build quality, comfort and reliability,” Cramb said. “With the LF-LC we now reinforce our design andtechnology credentials. The LF-LC is absolutely stunning. Its good looks mask some veryexciting design and engineering innovations that will influence Lexus vehicles in thefuture.

“LF-LC is part concept, part reality: the concept hints at what’s to come from Lexus, whilethe reality has us actively studying how we can engineer and build a vehicle like this in thefuture.”

Supporting LF-LC’s engineering feats is a stunning, technology-laden exterior andinterior, clad in a new white and brown interior. Commanding the concept’s bold front endare sculpted “L” shaped daytime running lights, vertical fog lamps and a fading dot matrixpattern to convey a sense of movement.

Continuing the sense of motion, LF-LC’s side profile is commanded by deeply sculpted airintakes behind the doors. A wrap-around glass roof provides a panoramic view to theoutside world while slicing through the air.

The concept car’s glass roof features a lightweight, cantilevered pillar with a glass-to-glassjunction inspired by modern architecture. LF-LC’s dynamic lines are carried through to therear deck, sculpturally integrating the spindle grille theme to complement the front of thevehicle while creating a unique sense of width. Tail lamps, inspired by a jet aeroplaneafterburner, make use of inner lighting to create a remarkable sense of depth. The rear is also fitted with fog lamps, repeating the fading dot matrix pattern of the frontfog lamps. Visually, the integrated tail and fog lamps repeat the “L” shape and lead theviewer’s eye down to the powerful Lexus quad exhaust.

The interior of the LF-LC concept contrasts the cool ambience of advanced technologywith soft textures and organic shapes to create a driver-focused synergy of form andfunction. The cockpit expresses a feeling of both openness and security. The driver isenveloped by deeply scooped side panels and a high, curved console. The effect is tofocus the driver zone on the controls and on the road.

Based on Lexus’ commitment to creating an intuitive driving experience, the LF-LC incorporates a remote touch-screen device that allows the driver to comfortablyoperate controls without shifting position or altering their line of sight.

Twin 12.3-inch LCD screens provide information and navigation display. Inputs comefrom a touch-screen control board piercing the swept centre console. The interface is usedto control the audio system, climate controls and navigation, and features a pop-up touch-screen keyboard for more complex entries. Set directly in front of the driver, multi-levelmeters layer analogue and LCD technologies. The bottom layer displays temperature, fueland the background for the Eco meter. The middle layer is the tachometer mechanicalcentre ring. The topmost layer provides indicators for the tachometer, speedometer andEco meter.

Surfaces throughout the cabin are presented in a combination of smooth leather and suede, with brushed metal trim and wood accents. The lightweight, race-inspired front seats areformed of multiple layers and repeat the interlacing curves that define the cabin interior. The racing-style steering wheel is clad in lightweight carbon fiber and contains integratedcontrols and start button.
