I had a conversation the other day with the “Beer Expert” ofBeerExpert.com.

I was intrigued by information recently passed on to me about the“secondary” market for rare and vintage beer. I was completelyunaware that beer was being traded in much the same way wines are.I was even more surprised to find out that some bottle can fetch inexcess of $1000.00 on Ebay.

Matt Simpson, the beer expert, is considered one of the mostknowledgeable in the industry. In addition to his awards and paid beerconsulting jobs, Matt is also “BJCP certified” (Beer JudgeCertification Program). Our regional beer expert, Jon Henderson(owner of The Atlantic City Beer Festival), has told me that Matt is aconsiderable source of knowledge on craft beer.

I asked Matt to take a few minutes for a phone interview so that wecould learn more about this interesting market for rare and vintagebeer.

I asked Matt what makes a good beer for those with a beer cellar. Iasked the question tongue in cheek not realizing that apparently, many people do have beer cellars. I am told that storing beer is doneabout the same way as one would store wine for the long term. Matttells us that beer with a high alcohol content is best for storage as ithas a propensity to age well and often tastes better after a few years. It can-not be pasteurized or filtered and it needs to have someinherent yeast in the bottle. Matt suggests beers like Dogfish Headsbig beers or other similar high IPA beers.

Matt is very passionate about craft beer and can overwhelm you withinformation so forgive me if my note taking didn’t keep up. Matttells us that there are almost an infinite number of craft beer recipes. There are so many types of hops, barley, and yeasts plus then thereare the barrel treatments where beer is kept in a whiskey, wine, orbourbon barrel for a time.

I asked Matt to name a big dollar beer in the secondary market. Hetells us that the “Stone Complete Vertical Epic 02.02.02” commandsaround $1000.00. He further explained that some brewers are labeldating their beers to create a vintage.

Sam Adams seems to enjoy playing in this secondary market withreleases of their “Infinium”, Millennium”, and “Utopia” beers.

Matt lives in Atlanta now but is originally from Toms River. Hisweb-site, BeerExpert.com is a wealth of knowledge for the craft beerenthusiast. He also has a beer app to help you choose great beers.Make sure to check out Matt’s web-site.

This interview has made me thirsty.

JOKES AND MORE -

Bubba and Junior were standing at thebase of a flagpole, looking up. A womanwalked by and asked what they were do-ing. "We're supposed to find the height ofthe flagpole," said Bubba, "but we don'thave a ladder." The woman took a wrenchfrom her purse, loosened a few bolts, andlaid the pole down. Then she took a tapemeasure from her pocket, took a measure-ment and announced, "Eighteen feet, sixinches," and walked away.Junior shook hishead and laughed. "Ain't that just like adumb blonde! We ask for the height, andshe gives us the length!"

BeersicleGoose Island Bourbon CountyStoutsicle Ingredients: 12 ounces Goose Island BourbonCounty Stout 1 ounce simple syrup 1 ounce heavy whipping cream

Simple Syrup Ingredients: 4 cups water 2 cups organic sugar

Simple Syrup Directions: To make the simple syrup, bring water toa boil and add sugar. Whisk to dissolvethe sugar and boil for 3 minutes on high.Remove from the heat and chill. This canbe made in advance and will hold in therefrigerator for 3 weeks. Also perfect forcocktails and other desserts.

Popsicle Directions: In a small bowl, mix together the beer(cold) and the simple syrup (also cold)with a whisk. Add cream if using. Pourthis mixture into the popsicle molds, icecube trays, silicone molds or small plas-tic cups. Place into the freeze, making surethe mold/container is level. Freeze for 6-12 hours in a 0°F or below freezer, untilcompletely solid. Since 40% alcohol can-not freeze until 173°F, the higher the al-cohol content of the beer might changethe texture of the finished popsicles. If youdon’t want to make popsicles, but like theidea of frozen beer, try the same recipe, but place the mixture into a small casse-role pan. Place in the freezer and after 1hour, using a fork, scrape the mixture.Repeat this scraping every 30 minutes, until the mixture can be formed into anicy pile. This is similar to a Italian Icecalled granita.

Everyone that plays golf wants to do threethings. Hit the ball further. Drive the ballstraighter. Shoot lower scores. Those areall very reasonable desires for a golfer.Lets focus on these three aspects of thegame that most golfers would like toimprove upon.

How do you hit the ball further? Increasingyour club head speed is the best way. However, I doubt anyone is getting youngerand stronger so odds are that you are notgoing to drastically increase your club headspeed. Realistically, just take your time inthe swing and concentrate on making solidcontact.

How do you drive the ball straighter? There are so many different factors thatcontribute to hitting the golf ball straight.Best advice… Get a lesson. Not from yourbuddy, not from your neighbor’s friend, notfrom your father in law. Go to your localclub professional it will be worth themoney spent.

How do you shoot lower scores? There arethree easy steps. Step one, forget abouthitting the ball further. Step two, practicechipping. Step three, practice putting.Follow those three easy steps and you willshoot lower scores.

If you continue to struggle with your gameyou could always try having a few drinksduring your round. It may not help yourswing, but you’ll care less about how many

double bogeys you make!

It pours a solidblack color, reminiscent ofespresso, with a soft caramel head.Initially, its flavor is of bitterroasted coffee, but its aftertaste isof semisweet dark chocolate. Fora very smooth and enjoyable por-ter, look no further than GreatLakes Edmund Fitzgerald.

Jaguar XK120 – The Startof a Sports Car RevolutionAuthor: George Chopek, ECR Staff WriterSee More atExoticCarResource.com

The Jaguar XK120 was manufactured in England by Jaguar Car Ltd.between 1949 and 1954. The XK was introduced at the 1948 LondonMotor Show and showcased the new XK engine. The XK engine wasa dual overhead cam 3.4-liter, straight 6 with an alloy cylinder headand twin side-draft SU carburetors producing 160 horsepower. Thismotor was fairly advanced for the times. ‘The Motor’ magazinereported a top speed of 124.6 mph and a 0 to 60 time of 10 seconds. This performance made it one of the most powerful sports cars of itstime. The XK120 was the first sports car produced by Jaguar afterthe war. The name ’120' came from the 120 mph top speed the carcould attain.

Sir William Lyons founded Swallow Sidecars in 1922, which createdmotorcycle sidecars and automobiles in the 20’s and 30’s. Uponintroduction of the all new SS 100 Lyons wanted a more sensualname for his company. He worked with his advertising agency andsettled on “Jaguar”. Obviously, the impression one gets when think-ing of a Jaguar typically runs to speed and agility. Lyons is said to bequoted as saying “a car is the closest thing we can create to some-thing that is alive”. Alive indeed. Lyons requested chief engineerWilliam Heynes to develop a sedan that could appeal to a post warmarketplace.

The first new “Jaguars” manufactured featured hand built aluminumbodies. About 200 of these were built before Jaguar moved to a moremass production XK to meet increasing demand. For model year1950, the car sported a steel body with alloy trunk, doors and bonnet. The 120 chassis featured independent torsion bar front suspension, recirculating ball steering, leaf springs at the rear and front and reardrum brakes.

In the United States, Jaguar and MG are credited with starting theAmerican sports car craze. The styling and performance is whatAmericans began to crave. (To address these desires, Chevy intro-duced the Corvette.) With the performance the XK delivered, it wasthought to be the best sports car in the world. And with performancecomes racing. In the early 50’s road racing was beginning to take off.International Motors was the authorized Jaguar dealer in California.Roger Barlow, its owner, helped found the California Sports CarClub. Many early racers came through Barlows organization such asStan Nowak, Richie Ginther and John Von Newman. In 1949 the XKtook the first two places at Silverstone. Sterling Moss took theTourist trophy at Dundrod and Silverstone.

Image, performance, styling and mass appeal. Mass appeal of thekind that drove people to crave exactly the kind of car Jaguar wasproducing. Take yourself to a time when American cars in the 30’sand 40’s were full-fendered, curvy and sensual. Demand for automo-biles was increasing significantly. Most of what the market offeredwas transportation and comfort oriented. Then along comes theXK120. So sensual in itself it created a new demand and expecta-tions for American carmakers to deliver. That long bonnet, short tailand fenders reaching over and in front of the tires provide the distinctimage of a long lean cat ready to pounce.

The XK120 is certainly worthy of its performance reputation equaledonly by its sexy curvy body. And now, some 50 years later, the Jaguaris a classy cat that has only gotten better with time.
