Back to the Futurein Styling?

Nowadays what’s a car designer to do? We’ve all seen the throwback stylingof the 60’s hitting the streets with American muscle. The Camaro, Challengerand Mustang all taking huge cues from their forefathers. Muscular, beefy, lotsof horsepower and striking resemblance’s to the past. But what about theworld of exotics and high performance sports cars? Should they or will theycontinue to look futuristic? Or, will design elements lean toward a more retrolook?

Take Porsche for instance. There really is no mistaking a 911 for exactly whatit is. The wide rear stance, the rounded roof line and the sloping nose. Allthings that are waiting to launch you into triple digits or help you carve up thecanyon. Either way, the appearance of this car is simply timeless Porsche.

On the other hand, let’s look at Ferrari. The California and its mouthy grillecertainly evoke plenty of Ferrari emotion. The F12 Berlinetta again says“Ferrari” but in a magnificently aggressive way. Or, consider the 458; simplynothing less than awesomeness. The styling of the 458 makes you want tokeep a tourniquet and some anti-venom handy. Wicked looks and Ferraripower to boot. For these three, styling is certainly modern with a lean towardfuturistic.

Another leap into the future is the Lamborghini Avantador. The new RagingBull on the block looks amazing and continues the “Countach” heritage bykeeping the sharp edged spaceship design that has nothing to do with the pastand all about moving to Lamborghini’s vision of the future.

But to have a debate on styling and where it could be heading, we must look atthe Morgan EvaGT. At first stare, you don’t know whether to grab the GreyPoupon or your driving gloves. Classic lines yet sharply sculpted. Impressivepower train included and Morgan is accepting orders for a nominal deposit.

You can continue to ponder the retro considerations when looking at theSpyker C8 Aileron. The very old school polished aluminum dash is a bitreminiscent of mid century American hot rodding. Speedo and tach are analogwhile an LCD display sits between them for those so inclined to look at it. Mixof the old and new.

How about the Ford GT. Exotic in every sense of the word but a clear step backin time while keeping enough of the future to not look “old”. Masterful to saythe least in execution.

Even Bentley continues to style the front clip of the Mulsanne with a nod to thepast. Those big round headlamps and ample grille harken to much earlier days.While the fit and finish is certainly modern in terms of lines and smooth edges,the front simply takes you back in time and lets you know in no uncertain terms“I’m a Bentley”.

Exotic and high end sports car auto makers may want to further tap into moreof a retro mindset, much like the modern American muscle car has. The realityis baby boomers continue to treat themselves to the better things when theycan; considering they’ve been the most financially successful generation.Although the past 4 years’ economic hardships may have slowed things down abit, designers may want to tune into that demographic and draw upon it withmore retro features in exterior and interior styling. Bringing design featuresfrom the past, when times were pure and the future looked a little brighter, maystir the market and give rise for everyone’s desire to take a step back once anda while. Designers may consider a swing toward pre-1945 styling or a slanttoward more 1950’s and 60’s aviation influence. Simple touches like the wayin which dials, displays, buttons and switches are manufactured can greatlyalter look and feel.

So as you ponder the next best thing, consider this. Do we really need anothercar based on the shape of a wedge? Should designers continue to focus onproducing sexy body styling and in doing so incorporate elements of the past?Wouldn’t a little bit of history help us all think back to a time when things werejust a little less stressful and easy going?

Who knows, maybe taking a couple steps back may propel the next exotic intothe future.
