Ocean Bottle-cap Mural Rainbow Fish was out and about today with an accomplice reminding our students to dress up as something appropriate for our Environment and Sustainability free dress day today. He also encouraged everyone to collect and bring in their coloured plastic bottle tops for our mural panel which we will be working on until the end of term.

Sustainability Free Dress Day. Today was our final gold coin free dress day for the year, with a sustainability theme to celebrate all our wonderful achievements this year, particularly our “Biodiversity School of the Year” award. Children were encouraged to dress as anything “green” e.g. fruit, trees, plants, native creatures, or even in blue or green. Thank you to all the families who made a gold coin donation, we have been very lucky to raise $5 which will go towards our many environmental projects happening in our school. Here are two photos of fun costumes for Sustainability Free dress day and Elsie, Paige and Chloe from Prep P with their model of how they would like our schoolyard to be, including a pool.

LEVEL LOW DOWN

Foundation This week has been a very busy one in Prep! On Monday we held our very own ‘Prep Health Day’. In the morning we were lucky enough to receive a visit from Imogen Miller to teach us yoga. She told us the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar whilst using yoga movements – it was fantastic and we had a great time! We then learnt about the ‘Healthy Eating Plate’ and created our own healthy eating paper plates which displayed the three most important food groups – carbohydrates, proteins and vegetables. On Tuesday, we continued to keep active by enjoying a lovely walk in the sun for our first excursion to the Bayside Library. We practiced our library manners and respected all the other library visitors and students who were studying in the library. We explored the Non-Fiction and Fiction section and got to borrow some books using our very own library cards.

Year One Such fun but also so important! The tooth fairies flew in to inspire our year 1s to care for their teeth. They encouraged us to brush our teeth twice a day along the gum line, to drink water not sweet drinks or fruit juice, to limit sugary foods and to eat healthy foods and snacks. This week has also been special because we had another super successful Step Up session. The year 1s returned to class buzzing with excitement having enjoyed meeting new teachers, visiting new rooms and finding out more about year 2. The fun and excitement doesn't end... next week our swimming program starts!

Year Two

Last Wednesday, Amelie’s mum came to our school to talk to us about dental hygiene. “I learnt how to brush the back of my teeth and my gums.” Marley “I enjoyed rating different foods using the traffic light system. Red meant ‘unhealthy’, yellow meant it was a ’sometimes food’ and green meant it was a ‘healthy choice’.” Arthur The Year 2’s have been enjoying Yoga classes with Georgie’s mum, Imogen. “Each stretch stretches some part of your body and that makes it feel like it’s tingling” Sophie “You stretch a lot and sometimes it hurts but then it feels good.” Ash

Year Three

Last Friday we went on an exciting excursion to the Yakult Factory and the Dandenong Market. When we arrived at school we felt so lucky because we were blessed with a beautiful spring day. After a bus ride and chance to play some of our favourite car games, we arrived at the Yakult Factory. The helpers there were really friendly and showed us how a big factory works. We were impressed with the production line and saw how the milk is produced from start to finish. We were even given a free sample to try! Some of us have started bringing Yakult to school after discovering the product’s health benefits. We also made links back to our science lessons in Term 3 when we learnt about good bacteria. Along with the Yakult Factory we spent time at the Dandenong Market. What a range of beautiful produce they had on

offer. The vendors had their work cut out for them as we spent lots of time shopping around for the best deals. We had

to think carefully about spending, saving and budgeting and we also had the chance to apply some of our mathematical

skills and strategies. With fruit in hand, we then made our way happily to the park where we enjoyed a lovely picnic.

What a fantastic day we had! We would like to say a big thank you to our parent helpers who came along, we couldn’t

have had this opportunity without you!

Year Four This week the Year 4 children participated in a Cyberbullying presentation with Sophia from Moorabbin Police. We learnt about; being safe online, privacy, not giving away personal information, what a digital footprint is and respect for others. We also discussed and reflected about the impact that cyberbullying has on people. Our swimming program commences on Monday. The bus will be leaving school at 9am sharp. Please help the children to be on time together with their swimming bag (towel, bathers, goggles, cap, thongs). If your child is swimming, please check on Compass that you have given consent you’re your child to attend the swimming program.

Year Six This week the Year Sixes had step up. They help the school community welcome the next Preps for 2017 along with spending some time with their buddies. Thirteen Year Seven students came from Mentone Girl’s Secondary College and Sandringham Secondary College. They spoke in small groups with Year Six students. This was a great opportunity for the Year Six students to ask questions about next year from the perspective of students who have recently gone through it. On Friday, 6C is presenting their sports clinic activities to each other. The sports clinic includes three skills that the group can all teach to one and other.

Year Five This past week Year 5 have been looking at the role of paid and unpaid work in our society. The students had the opportunity on Friday morning to volunteer their time and effort to support teachers around the school. Some of these jobs included sorting books, cleaning the sport shed, sorting Lego, organising the paper cupboard, unpacking resources, assisting small groups in the classroom and maintenance around the chicken coop. Afterwards the students had a discussion about the importance of unpaid work and the emotions that come with it. All the teachers were overwhelmed with the maturity of the Year 5 students and how helpful they were. Today the students experienced life as a Secondary School Student at Sandringham Secondary College. The visit included a tour of the campus as well as an opportunity to try out a couple of core subjects such as Science, English, Maths and an Arts/Technology Subject such as Woodwork, Art or Music. It was a positive introduction to Secondary School, and the students had the opportunity to ask questions to current leaders at Sandringham Secondary College.

SunSmart

As it is term 4, we need to be sun smart and remember our hats and

sunscreen in order to play outside. Camp Australia provides SPF 50 plus

sunscreen, but we do not provide hats. Children are encouraged to bring

their school hats to after school care, but if that's too tricky for some

children, parents are welcome to provide us with a spare wide-brimmed

bucket hat that can have the child's name on it and can be kept at the

service so no one misses out on outside play!

Camp Australia's Junior Global Citizenship Bangladesh Program

Our Term 4 program helps children see themselves as global citizens who

can contribute to a peaceful, just and sustainable world. We are celebrating

cultural diversity by learning about people's lives in Bangladesh.

As Camp Australia's Christmas collection, our service along with all Camp

Australia services nationally, will be creating handmade gifts (calico school

bags, bookmarks and friendship bracelets) for 7,500 primary school children

in Bangladesh!

Christmas Donations

Christmas is coming up at the end of the term and OSHC is in need of a

Christmas tree!

If you have a spare Christmas tree, lights, tinsel, decorations, etc. and you

wish to donate them to our service, that would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you and see you at OSHC!
