An ideal place to stop while you explore the Top of NZ, only an hour from Cape Reinga and the Giant Te Paki Sand Dunes. Walk to the famous Pukenui Wharf and go fishing, with a strong current known to bring in Kingfish, John Dory, snapper, trevally and kahawai. Play golf at NZ’s most northern club or drive to 5 different beaches, including 90-mile where you are likely to see the Aupouri Wild Horses.

Turangi Holiday Park is perfect for families, trampers, fishermen, skiers and those looking to unwind. There’s plenty of privacy and space to accommodate huge vehicles (11.5m+) at this dog-friendly park. Turangi, the gateway to the Tongariro National Park boasts three unique ski fields and is renowned for Trout fishing in the Tongariro river. The park is a great base for the Tongariro Alpine crossing, with transport available right from their front door.

At the end of Pouto Peninsula is the Pouto Marine Hall Campground. Offering hot showers, flush toilets, a full kitchen, backpackers rooms and a large lounge. Powered and non-powered sites overlooking the Kaipara Harbour. Activities are fishing, walking, swimming, horse treks, lighthouse tours or just relax and enjoy the peace and tranquillity.

Only 30 kms from Wellsford and 1.2 km to Kaipara Harbour is Te Puni campground, home to bittern fairy tern and many other native sea birds. Nestled at the top of New Zealand’s South Island, within walking distance of the golden sands of Kaiteriteri Beach, Bethany Park is situated in a favourite holiday spot for generations of Kiwis. Travel south from Hastings on SH2 to the holiday park on the literal edge of the Waipawa River. Only 100m to the village, golf course, tennis courts and bowling green. Enjoy the seclusion of the park, with 50 powered sites, a BBQ area and a playground, it’s the perfect place to stop off before your descent into the Wairarapa.

Waipatiki Beach Holiday Park is situated 30 mins north of Napier and accessed through a farm suitable for large vehicles where horses can be accommodated by arrangement. The park overlooks Waipatiki Beach, only 250m away, offering swimming, surfing, fishing or diving, with a nearby freshwater stream and small boats that can be launched from the beach. The many coastal and bush walks are well worth exploring with cycleways nearby.

Marahau Beach Camp is just a few steps from the gorgeous Marahau beaches and the departure point for trips into the Abel Tasman National Park. Make a booking at the Abel Tasman Centre for the campground, Water Taxi and Sea Kayaks, with a waterfront cafe and beer garden next door. Enjoy short walks or long hikes on the Coastal Track, with DOC campsites and huts for those on multi-day hikes.

There is always something about vineyards that evoke both comfort and a sense of indulgence. Get both with wine-tastings and a good meal at the hotel café. Just 38 minutes south of Hanmer Springs and especially convenient when you’ve come from the NZMCA Park at Hanmer and looking for more than a glass of supermarket wine and a meal you didn’t cook.

Historic Waikouaiti (1st European settlement in Southern NZ) has one of the most pristine swimming beaches in the country and inevitably offers activities such as fishing, boating, surfing and kayaking. With an expansive 38 hectares of land, the camp offers a quietness that goes with the size. Walk to the village with its general store and famed fish and chips.

Established 20 years ago, the Crow’s Nest is surrounded by an abundance of history. In an area founded in the goldrush days, visit the Golden Progress Mine or Hayes Engineering Works. See NZ’s oldest operating General Store and have a pint in the old Oturehua Tavern. Enjoy activities such as curling, ice-skating, night sky viewing tramping, golfing and mountain biking. Located less than 300m to the Otago rail trail at the Oturehua access point.

Sixty-five kilometres west of Christchurch, the town of Springfield sits at the foot of the Southern Alps. But the Mokau river, a significant whitebait fishery is only a few hundred meters away, as is Awakino Beach with that distinctive Taranaki iron sand. Whitebait Inn is also a café, grocery shop and a take away selling Whitebait fritters all year round. Enjoy the camp’s pet friendly grounds and well-maintained facilities as well as the swimming, surfing, hiking and walking tracks on hand.
