It has been reported to the Parish Counciland Community Association that, onSaturday August 3rd, six young peopletrespassed on the golf course causingvandalism. They uprooted signs, markerposts and other golf course infrastructure. When confronted by the owner Mr. Darkethey denied it, even though they were awareof his presence working. When asked toreplace the uprooted items they refused andjust laughed.
The group concerned can be clearlyidentified from the CCTV footage and arelocal to Stilton. This is disappointing as mostof our young residents are respectful ofprivate property in the village.
Mr. Darke did not, in this instance, involvethe Police but if these intrusions continuethen action could be taken. The ParishCouncil reminds all users of the bridleway, footpath and playing field that the golf courseis private property and venturing on to itwithout permission is an act of trespass andtherefore unlawful.

Stilton’s Brand-New WebsiteLURCHING INTO THE 21ST CENTURY
It comes as a surprise to realise that Stiltonhas had its original website for over ten years. That made it a great-grandfather amongwebsites; most sites have a working life ofaround three years and technology is nowmoving so fast that even that may be comingdown. We had to move with the times.
The result is a brand-new www.stilton.organd we encourage readers to browse throughit to see where everything is. Everything ofimportance has been carried over from theold site, although not in quite the same way.
There are three principal sections:
ABOUT STILTONThis is for people wanting to learn moreabout the village and its history.
VILLAGE LIFEThis is the page you should bookmark as it’sthe top page of a rich resource of informationfor residents.
CHEESE ROLLINGOf course! And with lots of Paul Biggins’excellent pictures either in the form of photogalleries or linked out to Picasaweb.
HOW IT WORKSThe site is built on modern technology thatenables many editors to contribute contentdirectly. Webheads will recognise it as apopular Content Management System orblogging tool, that we have configured to bea website with contributable content in theform of Posts. So village organisations cantake ownership of posting news about theiractivities and events, instead of having toimpose on our overworked Webmaster to doit for them!
Importantly, it also enables us to incorporatewhizzy modern features such as the imagegalleries without having to rummage aboutin a lot of low-level code.
WHAT’S NEWWe got rid of the old Forum. Nobody usedit seriously and the Webmaster regularly hadto go in and remove spam. So we’ve set upa Message Board section instead. Visitorswishing to post a message or an enquiry cansubmit an online form; if the messagedeserves to be published we will add it tothe Message Board.
SCAN’s section has been augmented with anonline order form for advertisers to use. Thisgoes straight to the Advertising andProduction Managers, avoiding problemswith changing email addresses. Prospectiveadvertisers can submit their requirementsonline and the Advertising Manager willcontact them to arrange payment. (No, wedon’t do e-commerce!)
IT’S FOR YOU-HOOThis new site is very much intended to befor Stilton residents. We’ve already had apositive response from some of the principalvillage organisations who want to beginposting their news and events, so we’ll begintraining sessions soon. If you’re not alreadyon our list of interested groups, just send usa Contact form!
A LIVING ENTITYWebsites of course need to continuallyevolve. Some intended content ‘fell off’ inthe switch-over and is being reinstated. Butif you want to suggest extra content orfeatures, again, just fill in the form!

Our smart new home page. The old site has been put out to pasture and is now gentlynibbling the Webmaster’s herbaceous border. We owe a huge debt of thanks to Paul Biggins, who has single-handedly maintained Stilton’s website for well over ten years. Now he canbe joined by other residents to share the burden and enable us to develop Stilton’s presenceon the web - the single most important medium for telling the world about ourselves.

Playgroup NewsTHE END OF AN ERA AND THE START OF A NEW ONE
MOVING ON…July has been a busy and fun-filled end toanother fabulous academic year. Sadly, wehave now said goodbye to our 'Rising Fives'who are very excited about starting schoolin just a few weeks, and we had lots of funat our leavers' party at Brewsters, where eachchild received a graduation certificate. Theyhave been a fantastic year group, full of funand character and we wish all of the childrena wonderful summer and good luck for thecoming year. Most of the children will bejoining Stilton School and will become'Owls' in September; we will miss them allbut will be saying hello from time to timeas they will only be next door!
LIFE’S A BEACHWe had lots of fun on our Hawaiian/Beachthemed day, playing in the indoor beach. Thechildren each made a Lei (flower garland)and we all had ice lollies! Some of thechildren's outfits were fantastic, they reallylooked the part for our beach party.
BEAR WITH USWe also invited our favourite cuddly toys toPlaygroup for our Teddy Bears’ Picnic dayand we were very happy that they all turnedup! We had a yummy picnic and lots of funwith teddy themed activities and songs withthe children and Teddies joining in!
BAT-FUNWhat a wonderful day our Summer Fete was!A big 'thank you' to everyone who camealong to meet Batman and have some fun inthe sun with us and, importantly, helped usto raise some vital funds for the Playgroup. We are already planning some fabulousactivities and visitors for the children in thecoming year. The money we raised - andcontinue to raise - will help to enhance thechildren's experiences even further.
KETTLE’S ON JANE!Of course the fun at the fete was tinged withsadness as we bid 'adieu' to Jane Wilkinson,Playgroup Leader, who has been with thePlaygroup for over 25 years. Jane waspresented with some lovely personalisedgifts from the children, parents, staff and

September is the month when we all get backinto our routine; the children go back toschool; summer ends on the AutumnalEquinox, which is the 23rd of the month thisyear. Elsewhere in SCAN you will find detailsof the local Heritage open day; the Last Nightof the Proms falls on September 10th.
But best of all, there is also a great choiceof good food available in the garden, on thehedgerow and, of course, in the shops. Ifyou have expensive tastes this is the monthto indulge in oysters, grouse, partridge orscallops, but for the more frugally inclinedthere is a rich selection of fruit such as plums, pears, peaches and blackberries. Manygardeners will be frantically pickingtomatoes and courgettes (which havesuddenly become marrows!) and the shopsare full of sweetcorn and squashes.
CRUMBLING AWAYThis month's recipe is a new take on an oldfavourite: Peach and Berry Crumble.
Make or buy your favourite crumble toppingto put over the following mixture:
● 2 ripe peaches, skinned and diced
● 1 cupful of blackberries (preferablypicked fresh from the hedgerows)
● 1 cupful of blueberries
● 2 tablespoons of sugar
Mix all together, then add 1 dessertspoonfulof plain flour, a large pinch each of gingerand cinnamon. Cook as normal for thecrumble mixture and you will end up with athick, tasty fruit layer to be served hot orcold with cream, custard or ice cream.

Fun on the FieldTHE MIKE NICKOLAY MEMORIAL FUN DAY
The inaugural ‘Mike Nickolay Memorial FunDay’ was held at the village recreational fieldon Sunday 21st July. The weather was kindand as more and more people arrived thetemperature seemed to rise with the swellingcrowd.
TEST MATCH SPECIALThe festivities commenced early with thestart of a cricket match between oldadversaries - The Bell Inn and The AngelCountry Club. The match was primarilyorganised by Sid Cocker and Tom Carringtonso a big thank you to them. After lots ofthrills and spills - and some contentiousdecisions - the Bell eventually endedvictorious with some extravagant batting byone of their openers and some fine bowlingdisplays being of particular note.
BANG ONMatt Skelhon spent the entire day displayinghis shooting equipment and, amongst manyother awards, his Gold, Silver and Bronzemedals that he won at the Beijing andLondon Paralympic Games. It was veryinteresting talking to Matt and getting aninsight into his sport and life in the Olympicvillages as well as all the other countries hehas visited. Many thanks Matt for all thetime and effort you put into the day. Wehope that you have even more gongs to showus next time.
WHEELY GOOD FUNThe Triumph Motorcycle Group turned upen masse and we were treated to viewingsome spectacular pieces of machinery. TieareNicholay judged and presented the ‘Best ofShow’ winner with a bottle of bubbly. Tiearewas then treated to a ride around the fieldon the back of one of the bikes. Well done
and many thanks to the guys and girls of themotorbike club who really got involved inthe day.
WHERE’S WELLY?Wayne Arthur won the Welly WangingCompetition. Wayne managed to wang hiswelly considerably further than anyone elseand collected the Golden Boot trophy whichI am sure he will treasure forever - unlesshe returns it next year! The Mini's footballteams had a clean sweep of prizes for theEgg & Spoon races, but some of the anticsof the motorbike guys had everyone institches as some of them tried running intheir riding boots and leathers.
ADAM’S FAMILY VALUESLater in the afternoon Adam Vickers tunedup the band and they were supported by someyoung members of Adam’s family, whoproved to be exceptional performers. As afurther treat Nichol of X Factor fame sangseveral songs and performed one duet withAlison, which was outstanding.
SO MUCH TO DO…The entire day was an original concept byGlen Woolner, and was organised almostsingle-handedly by Glen. The logistics ofbringing everything together and negotiatingthe seemingly simply but endless things suchas insurance, generator hire, bouncy castles, how much food to buy, cooking equipment, toilet hire, and, as you can imagine, loads ofother things to make the day the success thatit was, were intense and time consuming. The two bouncy castles that were providedseemed to be in constant use, as were thebar, barbeque and ice cream van.

MAKING IT HAPPENHowever, the day would not have happenedwithout the generous support of a great manypeople. In particular, Carol Warren who, onbehalf of the Scouts, provided the fourmarquees that were essential for the day. DanLister arranged the loan of the flat bed trailer(courtesy of Dodson and Horrell Ltd) whichbecame the centrally elevated stage forAdam, the band, and the singers to performupon.
Our appreciation goes to The Bell Inn, TheTalbot Inn and The Angel Spice Restaurantfor their generous donations and continuoussupport. A further vote of thanks goes toJohn from the Talbot for running a hugelyefficient bar and donating £100 towards theoverhead of operating the event. John hasalso applied to the Charles Wells BreweryGroup for a donation of up to £300 which,if successful, will go towards the StiltonPavilion Development Project.
A great deal of thanks also go to DavidHannam, Otto the dog, Sid and Glen, whoprovided the overnight security which helpedto keep our insurance premiums in check. The erecting, dismantling and generalmaintenance techniques of Clive, Patrick,Paul and Terry were a sight to behold.
A massive thank you is owed to Glen foreverything that he has achieved, but the dayreally belonged to everyone who turned upto support Mike's inaugural fun day. TheNicholay family enjoyed the day immenselyand were quite moved to see all of you there.
All in all a great day out - let’s see what wecan improve upon for next year.

Turning Green?ADVICE ON RENEWABLE ENERGY FROM TRADING STANDARDS
As solar panels become a common sight, youmay be wondering what options are availableto you to save - or even generate your own- energy; but it can be daunting knowingwhere to start. At Trading Standards we wantto help you find a trader you can trust andmake sure you know what you can expectof these businesses.
THE ENERGY SAVING TRUSTwww.energysavingtrust.org.uk is a goodplace to start when considering options. Theyare an independent organisation that providesfree, expert advice on saving energy in yourhome. Their website contains extensiveinformation and their helpline can becontacted on 0300 1231234 (national rate).
FUNDING OPTIONSIn terms of funding any improvements, ifyou aren't able to pay for them up front, youcould consider the Government's Green DealScheme (www.greendealinitiative.co.uk)which allows for repayment over a period oftime through your energy bills. As with anyfinance arrangement, make sure you knowhow much you will have to repay in total, what the monthly charges will be, and checkthe interest rate is competitive with otherfinance options. You should also be awarethat with Green Deal the debt attaches to theproperty, so if you sell it, your buyer willhave to take over the debt. If you need adviceon finance options, your local CitizensAdvice Bureau will be able to help you.
There are a range of businesses that offerhome assessment visits to advise you on the
options most suitable for your specificcircumstances. You will usually need to payfor this and you should check whether thereis a tie-in clause requiring you to use a certainbusiness to do the installation work if youdecide to go ahead. The assessment willgive you estimated savings projections forthe first year, based on a specific level ofenergy usage. Unfortunately this means youwon't know exactly what you will save, butyou can at least check to make sure theestimate is based on a realistic level of energyusage for your situation.
In terms of finding a trader, it is importantto shop around to ensure the business isreputable and that the price is fair beforeagreeing to any work.
Green Deal has its own approved assessorsand installers, but if you are not using GreenDeal we would recommend that you find aninstaller and products that are part of theMicro Generation Certification Scheme(MCS) or are Renewable Energy AssuranceLimited (REAL) approved. Theseorganisations have codes of practice thattraders have to comply with and standardsthat the products have to meet.
